WWE Roster Cuts Continue: Gallows & Anderson Among Latest Releases

WWE’s latest round of talent cuts extended into the weekend, with more names being confirmed as released from the company. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, known collectively as The Good Brothers, were let go, according to PWInsider, with Fightful later verifying the news. Additionally, Fightful also reported that Giovanni Vinci had been released as well.

These releases follow a string of cuts that began on Friday night, with Isla Dawn, Blair Davenport, Sonya Deville, The Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar), their manager Paul Ellering, and Cedric Alexander all parting ways with WWE.

Elektra Lopez, the manager of the stable Legado Del Fantasma, was released from WWE this weekend following a four-year run with the company.

While WWE has yet to provide an official reason for the roster changes, Fightful reports that sources within NXT believe the moves are tied to an upcoming wave of main roster call-ups. With WrestleMania season approaching, WWE frequently shakes up its rosters, and this could indicate fresh talent from NXT is about to get the spotlight on Raw and SmackDown.

The releases of Gallows and Anderson are particularly notable, as the duo had long been associated with WWE’s Bullet Club-adjacent faction, The O.C., alongside AJ Styles. Their return to WWE in 2022 was expected to be a long-term run, but it appears their time with the company has once again come to an end.

Notably, Anderson is out with an injury with a torn labrum and rotator cuff; he had surgery in November and used the word “indefinitely” in a December interview before setting a return expectation of “at least six or seven more months.” Fightful gave his recovery time as “at least 3-6 months minimum” and noted that Anderson is “in good spirits” despite the highly unusual practice of being released during injury rehab.

As always, the wrestling world will be watching to see where these released superstars land next. Could we see some of them in AEW, TNA, or NJPW? Only time will tell.

Sonya Deville Returns In WWE Raw Backstage Segment After 10-Month Injury Hiatus

WWE might have lost Rhea Ripley to the injury bug, but reinforcements for the women’s division arrived on “WWE Raw.” Rumors from Pro Wrestling Insider on Monday alluded to former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Sonya Deville being backstage. The rumors turned out to be true during Monday’s episode, and Deville was seen backstage propositioning Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark, introducing herself to the latter, with Baszler saying she wasn’t interested in what Deville had to say.

Deville tore her ACL in July 2023, in the midst of her tag title reign alongside Chelsea Green — she was replaced in the team by Piper Niven, who claimed one half of the championship without actually having won it. A late May/early June return would be about in line for the recovery time for an ACL tear. Deville has been a contracted WWE talent since 2015, but has never won a singles title in the promotion. Her former partner, Green, along with Niven, were recently drafted to “WWE SmackDown.”

Sonya Deville Suffers Torn ACL, Will Undergo Surgery

Sonya Deville has suffered a torn ACL and will be out of action for at least the next few months.

TMZ Sports is reporting that the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion recently suffered a serious knee injury that will require surgery.

The report says the injury occurred during her tag team championship match against Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair on the July 28th episode of WWE SmackDown in New Orleans, LA. Deville is expected to undergo surgery today.

While there is no timetable for Sonya Deville to return to WWE, it usually takes 6-9 months to recover from a torn ACL.

Sonya Deville gives injury update:

“What’s up, guys? So obviously the tag team titles are cursed. I’m just kidding. But like, not really. Anyway, as all of you probably already know and heard, thank you, TMZ.

I have torn my left ACL last week on SmackDown in my match against Bianca and Charlote, and obviously I will be out for an extended period of time due to the fact that I have to get surgery tomorrow. First and foremost, I want to say thank you to everyone who has sent their well wishes and messaged, me and everything. I really appreciate it and it means a lot. Obviously, you guys all know that I’ve been working the last eight plus years in the WWE and in my wrestling career to obtain a title of some sort, and I finally gotten my hands on the women’s tag team titles with Chelsea and I think we’ve been champs for 20 something days. So obviously it’s super bitter to say that it’s come to an end due to an injury, especially being that it’s my first injury in wrestling or really in sports in general.

And I’ve been a lifelong athlete since I was five, six years old, so obviously it’s super disappointing and it couldn’t have come at a worse time, but I don’t really think any injury comes at a great time and that’s kind of just how the cookie crumbles. But what I will say is that my life has kind of been a journey of trials and tribulations just how so many others have been. And we all go through ups and downs, but something that has kind of always been part of my character and who I am is I love being tested and I love testing my willpower and my strength and my mental and physical durability. So I feel like coming back from this injury, although it’s unfortunate, I feel like it’s going to give me a bigger motivation and just passion for what I already love doing and that’s being in the WWE. So I love you guys.

I wanted to thank you guys for all your support and tell you that I’m going to be back sooner rather than later and I’m going to be ready to put my hair up and square up.”

WWE Star Sonya Deville Was Arrested For Firearm Possession In February

WWE star Sonya Deville, real name Daria Berenato, was reportedly arrested last month for unlawful possession of a firearm in New Jersey. The incident allegedly took place on February 19 in Atlantic City, with Berenato being charged with possession of a handgun without a permit in the state of New Jersey.

According to a WWE spokesperson speaking to Wrestling Inc. on background, Berenato was granted an expedited permit to carry a handgun in her home state of Florida following a 2020 incident that saw a stalker break into her home, reportedly with the intent of kidnapping Berenato. Berenato, who recently announced her engagement, traveled to Atlantic City last week to celebrate the milestone. There, a mix-up with a valet attendant resulted in the attendant searching Berenato’s glove compartment in an attempt to identify the owner of the vehicle via registration. A handgun was found in the glove compartment and authorities were then contacted.

While Berenato hasn’t released any statement on the incident, an upcoming match between herself and Charlotte Flair is seemingly still on for a Madison Square Garden live event in New York City on March 12. The match was announced by the venue earlier today via Twitter, with Berenato retweeting the announcement.

Berenato is a regular personality on WWE television, having competed in five matches on TV or on premium live events so far in 2023. The WWE star last appeared on TV during the February 10 edition of “WWE SmackDown,” where she competed in a tag match alongside Chelsea Green against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. Since then, Berenato has wrestled at several live events, including after her alleged arrest.

Possible Spoiler On Sonya Deville’s WWE Ring Return

Sonya Deville may make her ring return during the Women’s Money In the Bank Ladder Match at Sunday’s pay-per-view.

It was first reported back in mid-June back that Deville was training for her return to the ring. Now Fightful Select reports that there has been a significant push to have Deville involved in Sunday’s Money In the Bank Ladder Match, and at one point Deville was penciled in for the match.

WWE sources expect Deville to return to the ring soon as she has been training for that return for a few months now. People within WWE have had “glowing reviews” of Deville, the handling of her past year, and the way she’s worked her new role.

WWE reportedly wanted Deville back in the ring by WrestleMania 37 season earlier this year, but officials kept delaying the return to action for some reason.

Regarding Deville possibly working Money In the Bank, there is just one spot left for the women’s MITB Ladder Match after Deville announced WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Natalya this morning. Deville has announced all SmackDown participants so far, including Liv Morgan and Zelina Vega. The four RAW competitors are Asuka, Naomi, Nikki A.S.H. and Alexa Bliss.

Deville has been working a main roster authority figure role since January of this year, returning after taking some time off in the fall of 2020. Deville has not wrestled since losing the No DQ Loser Leaves WWE match to Mandy Rose at SummerSlam 2020.

Man Arrested On Kidnapping Charge Outside The Home Of Sonya Deville

Phillip A. Thomas II, 24 from South Carolina, was arrested outside of the home of Sonya Deville (real name, Daria Berenato) early Sunday morning, according to the Tampa Bay Times. He’s charged with aggravated stalking, armed burglary of a dwelling, attempted armed kidnapping, and criminal mischief. Thomas is being held without bail.

According to police, Thomas had begun planning the abduction eight months ago. Early Sunday morning, he waited on the property for three to four hours, where he cut a hole in the patio screen to listen and watch until the homeowner went to bed. He then entered through a sliding glass door, which activated an alarm.

Police said Thomas was spotted by the homeowner, who left with a guest in a car, and also called 911.

The report continued that Thomas was still on the property when police arrived and “was carrying a knife, plastic zip ties, duct tape, mace and other items, and told deputies he was planning to take the homeowner hostage.”

“Our deputies are unveiling the suspect’s disturbing obsession with this homeowner who he had never met, but stalked on social media for years,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the news release. “It’s frightening to think of all the ways this incident could have played out had the home alarm not gone off and alerted the homeowner of an intruder.”

Sonya Deville took to Twitter to release the below statement about the harrowing incident:

Thank you everyone for your love and concern. A very frightening experience but thankfully everyone is safe. A special thank you to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for their response and assistance.

Backstage News On Charlotte Flair Defeating Asuka For The SmackDown Women’s Title, Stars React To Their Women’s Title Opportunity Being Scrapped

On Tuesday night’s SmackDown Live, Charlotte Flair faced Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. It was a rematch of their WrestleMania 34 encounter, and Charlotte once again beat her, winning the title in the process.

Flair is now an eight-time champion. Originally, plans were for Ronda Rousey to defend the RAW Women’s Championship against Charlotte and Becky Lynch in the main event of WrestleMania 35. Now there are two champions in the match.

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Charlotte winning the Smackdown Womens’ Championship wasn’t planned until the day of SmackDown Live.

The idea of Charlotte going into WrestleMania with a title has been talked about for a while, but the trigger was pulled last night.

All four scorned competitors took to Twitter afterward to vent their frustrations.

“I’m a very very patient person with a long fuse, but let me tell you when it blows, you won’t want to be the one in my way,” Sonya wrote. While her current frenemy Mandy claimed that WWE brass was “Putting all the equity in the wrong blonde.”

Carmella simply tweeted a expressionless emoji, followed by “Push through,” and Naomi just shared the word “Welp.”
