Ronda Rousey gets involved in PWG event

20141020-155033.jpg

This past Friday on October 17th 2014 UFC battemweight champion Ronda Rousey attended the PWG (pro wrestling Guerrilla) event in Reseda California with fellow training partners and UFC fighters Shayna Baszler and Jessamyn Duke. Rousey had to leave the event early since she had training in the morning the next day as she preps for her title defense in January. However the champ had some fun before jetting out. The “rowdy” one got involved in one of the matches directly from where she was sitting in the front row. She was prompted by one of the wrestlers to chop his opponents chest in Ric Flair fashion and Rousey did just that which led to cheers and woos from the crowd. You can read more on the story here http://www.foxsports.com/ufc/haymaker/ronda-rousey-gets-involved-in-local-california-pro-wrestling-show-101914?cmpid=tsmtw:fscom:ufconfox

Man oh man what I would’ve given to see that happen. Kudos to the wrestlers of PWG for getting the crowd involved and putting on a show all on their own.

Things like this really really make me want a “4Horsewomen” invasion in the WWE: I know without a shadow of a doubt it would be “best for business” I guess only time will tell

Total Divas Season 4

20141020-133751.jpg

It is being reported via Eonline that Total Divas is indeed getting picked up for a 4th season. The news doesn’t stop there though. The show will have two brand new cast members. Who are they you ask? Well…… The two new additions to the show will be none other then Alicia Fox & Paige. That would explain why WWE has paired them up in recent weeks.

Regarding this announcement I personally have mixed emotions. I’m happy because I adore both Alicia and Paige and I think their personalities and stories outside of the ring will definitely add to the show. Not to mention it’ll draw a bigger crowd. On the other hand I’m a bit hesitant to get excited since Vince McMahon has said he doesn’t want anyone on the show to hold the divas title because of TD being pre tapped and the confusion it may cause. Which means if this is true we know that AJ Lee won’t be loosing the title anytime soon and that truly takes away the importance of the title. I have heard they’re trying to come up with a solution to that problem though so let’s hope for the best.

As far as the new cast members go I always thought Fox would’ve been a logical choice. It’ll be exciting to see if her relationship with former IC champion Bad news Barrett will be revealed or if her sister who formally worked under the name Calee Turner in developmental before being let go by WWE will make appearances on the show.

As for Paige most of her fans are confused to why she’s joining the show since she was coined as “the anti diva” and just a little while ago Paige sent out this tweet & it’s clear she’s referring to the show.

Like I mentioned above Paige’s life outside of WWE is enough to draw viewers and it’ll be interesting to see her interacting with her family in England (who if you didn’t know have their own wrestling company back home) it’ll be interesting to see if the viewership goes up with the UK audience.

All these questions and theories will soon have answers because season 4 kicks off on January 4th 2015

So how do you guys feel about the news? Are you excited? Are you mad. Let us know by sounding off in the comments.

The element of surprise follow up

Last week, I wrote am article discussing the element of surprise when it comes to the world of sports entertainment. While spoilers can be seen as “fun” and wonderful thirst quenchers for when you “just want to know a little bit of a sneak peek”, they can also take away the surprise of what’s to come. One of the biggest surprises came last week when The Rock returned to a booming crowd. No one saw it coming and it drew a stronger bang than if people knew ahead of time. You’ll get a response sounding more like, “That was awesome!! I never imagined he’d show up!” rather than “What’s the big deal, I knew he was coming.”

Then there’s TNA, who filmed episodes weeks in advance and there’s spoilers floating around on the Internet. How did they manage to put on a current, live PPV storyline-wise with Bound for Glory in Japan? Simple. Place emphasis on matches being wrestling based showcasing skills as opposed to storyline driven. It was an excellent way on TNA’s part for dealing with a spoiler driven situation in as positive of a way as possible.

Supporting my previous argument, a world with spoilers can be fine in some elements, but it is best to leave the surprises alone and let them unravel as they may. The Rock’s return alone perfectly exemplifies this point

In Defense of Impact Wrestling – Trevor’s Opinion

This past Sunday night TNA Impact wrestling presented it’s annual pay-per-view event “Bound For Glory”. This year was different, we saw what is typically refereed to as the company’s biggest pay-per-view of the year take place overseas in Tokyo Japan.  The event had no connection to any current storylines being seen on Impact Wrestling weekly broadcasts and was not live.

While so many people want to focus on the negatives regarding “Bound For Glory” I want to point out that the wrestling seen on this event was fantastic. While the crowd in attendance was small by previous standards they were possibly more passionate and invested in the matches then larger crowds. The cross-promotion with Wrestle-1 offered a nice opportunity to see some great international wrestling along with TNA favorites.

I will be the first person to admit that Impact Wrestling is in a bad place right now. At the time of this post writing there has not been any news regarding the future of Impact Wrestling and television. The live crowds in the U.S. have not been great and it shows. However the in-ring product itself has been phenomenal for several weeks.

The truth is there are two different types of fans watching right now. You have the “Sports-entertainment” fan and then you have the pure “Wrestling” fan. While the WWE has done a good job over the years at growing the popularity of wrestling in general there has been a downside. The WWE is no longer wrestling, It is an entertainment company. The truth is if you want just wrestling you haven’t found it in the WWE.

The WWE doesn’t even use the word “wrestling during it’s broadcasts anymore. In fact the last person to do so was Daniel Bryan. What we watch on Monday nights is strictly “Sports Entertainment” while what you see from promotions like Ring Of Honor, NJPW and even TNA is more of a traditional pro wrestling product.

The WWE goes out of it’s way to let you know that they are ENTERTAINMENT. They want to make movies and cartoon series. The wrestling showcased on their programming is just a tool used to get the attention of fans. The fact that the WWE has gone so far to refer to Raw as an “episodic series” and even had a “season premiere” even though the show is broadcast all year are just a couple examples of how the WWE looks at the product they are putting out as an ENTERTAINMENT company.

If someone considered themselves a fan strictly of the WWE I suggest that you refer to yourselves as “Sports entertainment fans” rather then a “professional wrestling fan”. In my opinion, to be a fan of pro wrestling a person has to respect the history and traditions. They must also appreciate what is happening in the ring regardless of lack of a storyline. While a good build up is always preferred of course, the truth is we should appreciate the story being told in the ring between the wrestlers.

While Impact Wrestling is falling short when it comes to getting good crowds and it’s future being up in the air as far as television, they still manage to draw over one million consistent viewers and are considered the favorite of viewers in the United Kingdom versus the WWE product.

Dixie Carter and Impact Wrestling can and MUST succeed. The WWE has done a horrible job at preserving the legacy of professional wrestling not to mention they treat the word “wrestling” itself like a course word. My hope is that Impact Wrestling can re-brand themselves and drop the “TNA” and “Impact” names and start fresh. The WWE marks have made it impossible to be successful with the current branding.

Here’s to a bright future for pro wrestling and the preservation of tradition for those that want an alternative to sports entertainment. I am not against the WWE product but want people to see there is a difference between what they offer versus others companies.

Celebrities, Promotion, and the WWE

On this past Monday’s RAW, Todd Chrisley of Chrisley Knows Best fame and NeNe Leakes, famous for her role on The Real Housewives of Atlanta were guests, promoting their shows respectively. With such instances as Leakes getting into a backstage confrontation with WWE Diva Cameron, it’s not uncommon for WWE superstars and divas to get involved with talent personalities.

From Donald Trump to Floyd Mayweather, the WWE serves as an excellent avenue for celebrities to promote their latest TV show, movie, album, book, etc., while (for ones that are fans) being able to fulfill a life long or childhood dream of being on WWE television and perhaps even competing in a WWE ring.

While some fans may argue that celebrities are on there just for promotion, it is hard to argue that none of them are having an enjoyable time. The bigger the WWE fan, such as NFL football players who sit in the front row or TV personality Maria Menudos who has actually gotten in on the action, the more passion and energy the celebrity can display and the more enthusiasm the fans can give back. If the fans can buy into your excitement and relate to your passion, it’s a positive experience.

Whether it’s The Miz guest hosting on TMZ, John Cena being interviewed by Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Springer holding an intervention between the Bella Twins, or Kevin Hart celebrating in the ring with Adam Rose and his Rosebuds, the wrestlers get exposure on mainstream television and the celebrity is either introduced to or finally gets to be involved in the world of sports entertainment.
