Pro Wrestling Sheet has learned WWE‘s plan for the upcoming women’s Royal Rumble was kept so tightly under wraps that even the competitors were left in the dark.

Multiple sources The Sheet that the women in the match were NOT given a heads up as to what Stephanie McMahon would be announcing on Raw, so their reactions afterward were genuine.

Only a handful of people were in the know and most on the production team were kayfabed up until the announcement went down, which was obviously done to keep the news from leaking.

More On Ronda Rousey – Women’s Royal Rumble Rumors,

Image result for Ronda Rousey WWE

It should be noted that Rousey is currently filming the movie Mile 22 with Mark Wahlberg in Atlanta, and filming is scheduled to run into February, after the Rumble. That is currently the only movie on her schedule, so she is free after that. It is possible that she might still appear in the women’s Rumble match, but as we’ve seen with The Rock, producers aren’t too keen on their stars wrestling when they have projects.

Dave Meltzer did state on Wrestling Observer Radio that there are women who are scheduled to be in the match that believe that Rousey will be a part of it.

Could Ronda Rousey Be A Possible Surprise Entrant For The Women’s WWE Royal Rumble

There was immediate speculation on former UFC Champion Ronda Rousey being in the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match after the big announcement from Stephanie McMahon on last night’s RAW. Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that people within WWE who are scheduled to be in the match are under the impression that Rousey will be in as well.

As noted, the women’s Royal Rumble match will feature RAW and SmackDown Superstars competing for a women’s title shot at WrestleMania 34. There’s speculation on WWE NXTSuperstars and stars from the past being brought in for the match but that has not been confirmed.

Rousey has trained at the WWE Performance Center recently, along with NXT Superstar Shayna Baszler. We noted back in October that WWE still had plans to do the Four Horsewomen vs. Four Horsewomen match at WrestleMania 34, with current SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Bayley vs. Rousey, Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir.

The 2018 Royal Rumble pay-per-view takes place on January 28th from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Iron Man matches, hell in the cells, street fights, Money in the Banks. What do all of these have in common? Up until recently only men competed in these types of matches. Today though we live in a different time and now more than ever it is clear that women can wrestle just as good, if not better then the men. It’s clear that these women are leading a change and after last night there’s still no sign of slowing down.

Last night on Raw Stephanie McMahon made the announcement that on January 28th we will witness the first ever all women’s Royal Rumble. It was clear by not only the reaction of the superstars in the ring but the crowd as well that this has been a long time coming. We here at Wrestling News Blog are over the moon excited about this announcement and we are proud that we get to live to see it happen. Everyone knows the Royal Rumble always has surprises so the possibilities are endless, but one thing is for sure the Road to WrestleMania is Paving out to be an epic one.

WWE issued the following press release on the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match, featuring comments from Stephanie McMahon:

FIRST-EVER WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE® MATCH SET FOR JANUARY 28STAMFORD, Conn. – For the first time in history, WWE’s female Superstars will perform in a Royal Rumble match on Sunday, January 28, where Superstars will go head-to-head with the winner receiving a championship opportunity at WrestleMania® 34 this April. This milestone was announced tonight by WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon during Monday Night Raw® live on USA Network.

The women’s Royal Rumble marks another milestone in WWE’s women’s evolution, which has placed a spotlight on its female performers, involving them in more prominent storylines, with deeper character development and longer matches.

“The first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match will mark a significant moment in the evolution of WWE,” said Stephanie McMahon, WWE Chief Brand Officer. “WWE’s female performers are role models, inspiring and empowering women and girls to be confident and strong. They deserve their own match at Royal Rumble.”

At WrestleMania 32, WWE unveiled a new Women’s Championship title belt and re-branded the Divas Division to become the Women’s Division. Since then, WWE has placed a greater emphasis on its female performers, including recruiting female talent from around the world, as well as the recent signings of the first female recruits from the Middle East and India.

This year, WWE created the first-ever women’s tournament, Mae Young Classic, which included 32 of the top female competitors from 16 countries, underscoring the breadth and international diversity of women in sports entertainment. In addition, earlier this month, WWE Superstars Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss took part in the first-ever women’s match in the Middle East, and this summer in partnership with Mattel, WWE unveiled the first-ever Fashion Doll line featuring its female Superstars.

Ricochet Not Taking Any Independent Dates After January, WWE Royal Rumble Debut Possible

Ricochet

A possible WWE debut for Ricochet has been rumored for some time, most recently earlier this month. Ricochet recently gave an emotional interview after NJPW King of Pro Wrestling, which was said to feel like a goodbye. His Lucha Underground contract is expected to expire on or around January 16 and he’s previously hinted that he wants to go to WWE.

Now The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via Sportskeeda) reports that Ricochet could be in the WWE in time to join the annual 30-man Royal Rumble match, which would be his debut. With the Lucha Underground contact set to expire around mid-January, a Rumble debut is possible. Even more evidence points to the fact that the independent star allegedly told promoters he won’t take any dates after the end of that month. If that happened, the former Prince Puma would get a debut spot similar to that of AJ Styles, who is now a big player in WWE.

Kenny Omega Says He Will Not Be At The WWE Royal Rumble, He’s Re-Signing With NJPW

Kenny Omega appeared on Wrestling Observer Radio today and revealed that he is close to re-signing with New Japan Pro Wrestling for another year and will not be appearing at this Sunday’s WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

“I will not be at the Royal Rumble,” Omega said. “I don’t want people to have this false hope of me showing up in the Royal Rumble and then not being there and being disappointed when there’s a fantastic match happening with fantastic competitors. I don’t want the lack of me being in that to disappoint people.”

Omega noted that he hasn’t finalized terms for a new contract with New Japan, however he will be flying out to Japan in mid-February to re-negotiate and “it’s looking positive.” He admitted that while there’s a small chance that the deal could fall through, it’s looking like he will be staying with New Japan for one more year. He said that he still feels like there are things in Japan that are unfinished. He added that WWE’s roster is stacked and he feels like he can make more of an impact in New Japan rather than WWE.
