With rumors swirling that Rey Mysterio is on his way back to WWE, the legendary wrestler is reportedly injured.

According to a report by Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, Mysterio is believed to have torn his left biceps during a tag team match on Friday night in Waterbury, Connecticut for Northeast Wrestling.

Meltzer doesn’t know the injury’s extent other than Mysterio believes he tore the muscle during the match, where he teamed with Flip Gordon against Joey Mercury and Caleb Konley. According to those who saw Mysterio backstage after the bout, there was heavy swelling in his left arm.

As the match was going, Mysterio notified Mercury about the injury. Mercury was ready to call an audible on the finish, but Mysterio immediately set up a double 619 on his opponents before pinning Konley with a splash off the top rope.

Rey’s upcoming dates include an upcoming CRASH Lucha Libre event on March 17th in Tijuana, as well as the March 25th NJPW event in Long Beach, California, where he will be facing the legendary Jushin “Thunder” Liger. Who will John Cena Face At WrestleMania 34, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio Or Somebody Else?

Image result for Cena vs Undertaker or Cena vs Mysterio

There was speculation that John Cena would face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34. Then there was speculation that the match would no longer be happening and Cena would be facing Rey Mysterio. Now it seems that the Cena vs Taker match might still be on. Whether it’s Cena vs Taker or Cena vs Mysterio, we will probably have to wait until after SmackDown’s Fastlane pay-per-view to find out for sure.

As seen on WWE Monday Night RAW this week, John Cena teased a match against The Undertaker. Cena said that he was looking for a path to WrestleMania and had issued a challenge to The Undertaker, but WWE officials told him that it’s impossible to make the match.

“I have figured out that I need to stand in this ring and do something that I should have done a long time ago, and that is to put out a WrestleMania challenge to the Undertaker!” Cena exclaimed to a huge pop from the crowd. “You want WrestleMania? That IS WrestleMania! And that match is not happening. I don’t make the matches. As obvious as this seems, I’ve been told that the match is not happening because that match, once again, is impossible.”

It seemed unlikely that WWE would have the match mentioned on live television, only for it not to happen. However, Justin Barrasso reported at Sports Illustrated on Wednesday that Cena will be facing Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania after it was ruled that The Undertaker will not be working the show. It was added that Mysterio was backstage at SmackDown Live on Tuesday and is reportedly finalizing a deal with WWE by the end of the week. Mysterio was backstage at the SmackDown live event this past Monday in San Diego and posted a photo after the show with Sin Cara.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the plan for WrestleMania is still Cena vs. The Undertaker as of this past Monday night. He noted that he hasn’t heard of any changes in plans since, and that the only thing that would prevent that match would be Taker pulling out of the show for some reason, like getting injured during training. It was noted that Cena’s promo was to defer attention from the dream match until after he works the SmackDown Fastlane pay-per-view.

Cena appeared on SmackDown Live on Tuesday night and defeated WWE Champion AJ Styles in a non-title match to earn a spot in the main event of Fastlane on Sunday, March 11th. Cena, Styles, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler will compete in a Six-Pack Challenge for the WWE Championship.

As for Mysterio, Meltzer noted that he has no deal with WWE, but has a meeting with Triple H scheduled very soon. A deal is reportedly dependant on Triple H clearing his schedule, as he is not looking to work full-time. There are also some other details that need to be ironed out, like opportunities outside of wrestling for Mysterio.

Image result for rey mysterio royal rumble return 2018

It looks like Rey Mysterio may be returning to the ring for WWE at WrestleMania 34 in a huge match against a top WWE Star. That top star is speculated to be John Cena.

There had been a lot speculation of Cena facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34 but it appears that is not happening and Cena may be facing Mysterio.

Mysterio was backstage visiting at Monday’s SmackDown live event in San Diego, his hometown. Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated reports that Mysterio was also backstage for last night’s SmackDown TV tapings in Los Angeles to finalize details for the deal that will see him work WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. Barrasso added that Rey’s rumored opponent is Cena.

Barrasso now reports that the Cena vs. Mysterio match was brought to the table after it was ruled that The Undertaker will not be working this year’s WrestleMania event.

Cena vs. The Undertaker had been expected but Cena did note during Monday’s RAW promo that he was told the match with Taker was impossible and not happening.

Last night on SmackDown, Cena returned an defeated AJ Styles to earn a spot in the WWE Championship Match at Fastlane against WWE Champion AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler.

Mysterio made a surprise appearance for WWE at the Royal Rumble back in January and has been rumored to be in talks with the company about a return later this year or in early 2019.

The last Cena vs. Mysterio singles match came on the July 25th, 2011 RAW. That match saw Cena defeat Rey for the WWE Title. The two would then team up at a December 28th, 2013 WWE live event in Newark, NJ. They defeated Randy Orton and Alberto Del Rio that night.

Inside Speculation On Rey Mysterio’s WWE Future, Update On Rey’s Son Training For A Wrestling Career

Image result for Rey Mysterio and son Dominik 2018

There’s speculation within WWE on Rey Mysterio signing some sort of new deal with the company in 2019, if not this year, according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The deal would be for a part-time run as Rey has been adamant about not wanting to work a full-time WWE schedule.

The Observer notes that Rey could work a deal similar to Chris Jericho’s recent deal where he worked with WWE for some of the time but also had time off for his own projects. It will be interesting to see if WWE’s deal for Rey would allow him to work for other wrestling promotions as he remains very active on the indie scene, here in North America and overseas.

On a related note, Rey’s son Dominik has been training for a pro wrestling career with Jay Lethal in Tampa, Florida and is said to be doing very well. Dominik is no stranger to WWE fans as he appeared in various storylines over the years.

It looks like Dominik, who is much taller than his father, will be wrestling in a mask as he has started to keep his face covered in social media posts. Below are a few of his recent Instagram posts:

I didn’t move all the way across the country to play games, I came out here to train my body/mind and build mental toughness and discipline. I’m not out here learning to compete, I’m here so I can learn how to dominate!

Rey Mysterio Teases Future WWE Dream Match With AJ Styles

Image result for Rey Mysterio Teases Future WWE Dream Match With AJ Styles

Rey Mysterio posted the photo of himself with AJ Styles backstage at this past Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Mysterio teased a future matchup between the two, writing, “One Day! A/J-vs-R/M #Respect”

Mysterio and Styles have actually squared off once before. They wrestled in the U.K. for a 5 Star Wrestling event in January of 2016. Styles defeated Mysterio via pinfall when Mysterio tried to hit him with a seated senton from the top rope. Styles caught Mysterio and reversed it into the Styles Clash for the win.

As noted, Mysterio is currently a free agent although PWInsider reported that WWE officials took note of the reaction that he received, and that it may lead to more appearances for the company. They have had talks in the past, however WWE wants him back full time while Mysterio will only work a limited schedule.

Backstage Updates On Rey Mysterio’s WWE Future And What’s Preventing A Deal

Image result for Rey Mysterio 2018 Royal Rumble

Rey Mysterio returned to WWE TV in the men’s Royal Rumble match on Sunday under a one-time deal. It was noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the appearance could definitely end up being more dates but Rey is not going to work a full schedule. WWE and Rey have had on and off talks for the past year but the main issue has been WWE wanting Rey back under a full-time schedule.

The loud pops that Rey received did catch the attention of WWE officials, according to PWInsider. This is also helping the chances of WWE bringing him back for more dates.

WWE and Mysterio both went to great lengths to keep Sunday’s appearance a secret, as WWE did with Ronda Rousey and some of the other special appearances.

Rey remains a free agent as his Lucha Underground deal expired and his recent talks with Impact Wrestling ended without a deal. The talks with Impact, led by Konnan, were so close to coming to a deal that travel arrangements were made. There was talk of Impact getting Rey to debut at the recent TV tapings but officials wanted Rey to debut at their April tapings with the idea of his in-ring debut coming at the April 22nd Redemption pay-per-view.

It will be interesting to see if Rey’s future with WWE or Impact depends on a potential deal for his 21 year old son Dominick, who has appeared on WWE TV a few times over the years, as Rey has been training his son for a pro wrestling run as of late.

Rey Mysterio To Make Impact Wrestling Debut Soon?

Rey Mysterio could finally be making his Impact Wrestling debut soon, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio. The rumors on Rey talking with Impact go back as far as the summer of 2017.

Impact officials are trying to get Mysterio signed for the tapings that begin this week in Orlando, but at last word, there was no deal. There are talks still happening between the two sides.

It was reported back in the summer that Rey was entertaining offers from WWE and GFW/Impact. The talks with WWE fell through and the last top US promotion Rey worked for was Lucha Underground. Rey told ESPN in December that he’s not currently signed to any deal.

“I’m not locked up to any company,” Mysterio said. “I’m an independent contractor, as we say. I could go work wherever I want. That’s the beautiful thing about being on this side of the fence. You don’t have a commitment with only one company. You can go around and pretty much wrestle wherever you want. You can choose when you want your off-days to be. That was one of my main priorities when I left WWE.”

Rey recently took to Instagram and posted the following on his 2017:

Was Truly Blessed this past year 2017 first & foremost for having the most amazing, supportive & lovable partner that I have as wife…… Angie @619reynaLater through out the year was on the roster of @luchaunderground & was picked up by @netflix……. Backstage Updates On Rey Mysterio, What GFW Had Planned For Him, Recent Injury, Training His Son

No word yet on where Rey Mysterio is headed but it won’t be Global Force Wrestling, according to PWInsider and The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Rey had an offer from GFW after negotiations between the two sides but he opted not to take it.

Rey was also in talks with WWE over the summer but those talks stopped as Vince McMahon did not want to work with Rey’s representation, mainly Konnan, among other reasons. It was also noted that while Rey and WWE were talking, the talks were said to be overblown in the first place as Rey was actually looking at signing with GFW because of the easier schedule and because it would allow him more freedom to do other projects. When word first got out about Rey talking with WWE, Dave Meltzer was told that it was actually GFW Rey was talking with, and that there was nothing significant to the WWE reports.

While his in-ring future with a major company is up in the air, Mysterio is said to be focused on training his son Dominick and preparing him for a pro wrestling career. Rey is also heavily involved with The Crash promotion in Mexico.

GFW wanted Rey to wrestle against Alberto El Patron at the November 5th Bound For Glory pay-per-view, according to The Observer. We’ve noted how Jeff Jarrett vs. Alberto El Patron was in the works for Bound For Glory but is likely off the books now that Jarrett is taking an indefinite leave of absence from GFW. The Observer notes that the storyline would have had Alberto blaming Jarrett for his recent GFW suspension. Jarrett vs. Alberto was to be teased until they pulled a big swerve on the night of the show and had Jarrett introduce Rey as Alberto’s opponent instead. When the talks with Rey fell through, plans changed back to Jarrett vs. Patron for Bound For Glory. There’s still no word yet on what Alberto will be doing at Bound For Glory, if anything at all.

On a related note, Rey suffered an ankle injury while working for the Catch Wrestling promotion in Austria during an eight-man single elimination tournament in four cities from August 30th through September 2nd. Rey defeated Alofa on August 30th and Apolo on September 1st to make it to the finals of the tournament. He then appeared at the finals on September 2nd in Vienna and apologized for the injury, promising to return to Vienna to make up for it. His opponent for that night, Joe Doering, then attacked him but Rey made a quick comeback to hit the 619 and roll him up for the win. He went to the hospital after the match to get the ankle checked out and while there was an injury, it was not serious and he’s expected to be back in the ring soon. The Observer noted that Rey suffered the injury because he’s been worked several dates in recent weeks.
