Big E Cashes In, Wins The WWE Championship On Raw

Big E cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and won the WWE Championship from Bobby Lashley on Monday Night Raw.

The night started with SmackDown’s Big E saying he was going to cash in his MITB title shot contract, whether it be Bobby Lashley or Randy Orton who was fighting Lashley for the title in the main event.

The win came at the end of Monday Night Raw after Lashley successfully defended his title versus Randy Orton. A heck of a main event match that finished with about 7 minutes left in the three-hour program, it was clear when Lashley was selling a leg injury that there was more to come in the show. Big E’s music hit and he came to the ring, telling the referee that he was, in fact, cashing in. WWE cut to a commercial break only to return and see Lashley try to weasel his way out of the match, claiming he was too injured to compete. One slap in the face by the challenger was all it took to get Lashley to commit.

The few minutes went back and forth with Lashley getting the early advantage, but Big E fighting back. An attempt to land the Big Ending didn’t connect, and E had to kick out of spear from the champion. Eventually, Big E was able to turn the tables again, land his move and get the three count to win the title. His friends from New Day came down to the ring to celebrate with him, closing the show.

Whether the title change was a reaction from WWE to everything that AEW has been throwing at them over the past couple of weeks or this was always the plan, this is a well-deserved win for Big E. He’s been an extremely popular WWE Superstar, but never had a run with the Championship. The crowd was absolutely behind him and the live audience popped huge for the title change.

We’ll see how this affects Extreme Rules. It’s expected that Big E may face Lashley who will want a rematch.

Unexpected Raw Changes A Result Of Vince McMahon Losing Cool Backstage [Rumor]

The somewhat unique episode of Raw, one that didn’t feature most of the advertised matches, was rumored to be a result of Vince McMahon flipping out.

According to PWInsider.com, the reason Monday Night Raw seemed like a bit of an odd show was because it was writter, re-written and the re-written again. A three-hour program that featured a lot of talents fans haven’t seen in a while, but also wins by unexpected talents and what appeared to be a shoot fight during the Nia Jax and Charlotte match was just the start of a show that felt different from many of the Raw’s that preceded it.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider writes, “Yesterday was one of the ‘longest’ days in a long time for the WWE Creative team, according to several sources who reached out to PWInsider.com today.” They add that McMahon was extremely unhappy with the original plans for the show, “ripped up the script” several times and even tossed out the initial rewrite. They note that in that rewrite, some of the ideas were actually pretty good but Vince ditched most of them, before finally writing the show himself. They add, “Until 6 PM EST, there was no official direction or plan for the episode” and added, “One source who went through the process described it as “the loudest and angriest” they’d ever seen McMahon on a show day.”

Reports like this should be taken with a bit of skepticsim. At the same time, it was clear Monday’s Raw was unique. It’s fair to assume there were last-minute changes and that either stars weren’t available or Vince just decided to scrap everything the company had promoted the week prior, including two advertised matches.

While the idea that Vince has all these writers and doesn’t listen to any of them is troubling, but also that the talent likely had little idea what was expected of them prior to going out and performing isn’t wonderful news. That said, the show was rather interesting and at times, quite entertaining.

Sure, some of that might have been akin to watching a car crash live, but good portions of the show were well done.

WWE Teases Elias Character Is No More During Monday Night Raw

WWE aired a vignette where Elias threw his guitar in a fire and said WWE no longer stands for Walk With Elias. He said, “Elias is dead.”

During the last hour of Monday’s Raw, a vignette of Elias was shown where the Drifter and apparently former musician destroyed his guitar and claimed that “Elias is dead.”

A character who was among the more popular in the company when things were going well and he was fresh and new, creative seemed to miss an opportunity with Elias to really capitalize on how big a heel he was and how big a babyface character he could be. They chose to try and make his gimmick a parody of itself and team him with partners that didn’t necessarily accentuate his unique skills. His popularity faded and he became a bit of a mid-card jobber.

It appears WWE is going to try and reinvent the Elias character if the video shown during Raw is any indication.

It featured Elias standing over a bonfire he likely started himself and looked at his guitar. After a dramatic pause, he threw the guitar in the fire and said, “WWE used to stand for Walk With Elias.” He then added as he walked away, “Elias is dead.”

If WWE is going to change up his gimmick, it’s not clear which direction they’re going to go with the character. No indications were given in the video itself. The only hint was that the announcers for Raw acted shocked and asked out loud what it meant. That seems to hint that a storyline might present itself that Elias could explain why he’s going a different direction in the future.
