Former GFW Star Davey Richards Injured, Knee Surgery Required

Independent wrestler Davey Richards says he’s been forced to cancel the rest of his bookings in 2017 due to a knee injury that will require surgery.

Richards tweeted a statement on Sunday which said, “I can’t apologize enough to everyone but I have to cancel my remaining bookings for 2017. I am going to need surgery on Right knee.”

The wrestler continued: “I’ve always been someone who has bore my heart inside of the ring & “kept it real” with the fans. I’ve been known to as you call it “no show” events. Truth is ( no excuse) I’ve been battling knee issues since 2006 when I tore my knee the night before my first ROH match. Cortisone shots, Anti inflammatory drugs, Stem Cell therapy, hyperbaric chambers, etc have kept me able to perform this long but not anymore.”

For those who don’t recall, Davey underwent surgery last year for his other knee as well.

Richards concluded by writing: “I refuse to let it end like this. I’m going to take the proper time off to get the correct surgery and rehab. I hope to return to make good on the events I haven’t been able to perform at bc of my knee. I always prided myself on being a wrestlers wrestler and if I couldn’t give You 100% I didn’t want to waste your time. Perhaps foolish pride. But that’s me.”

Davey Richards Explains His Decision to Leave GFW

Davey Richards

Davey Richards recently spoke with USA Today’s For the Win, here are the highlights…

On His Decision to Leave GFW: “I’ve done a pretty good of trying to juggle the very high demands of wrestling and school, but it’s gotten to the point where my school load would be so much that I couldn’t do both. The last little while, I couldn’t give 100 percent to wrestling or to medicine because I was being pulled in both directions. I didn’t think it was fair to anyone who pays to see me not to be able to give 100 percent. I can still wrestle a part-time schedule, but it’s not really right to expect TNA to pay me a salary with my hopefully being able to commit to a schedule. School needs to come first. That’s the point where I am.”

On Becoming an EMT: “Emergency medicine has always been my main source of interest,” he said. “The adrenaline rush I get from that is in some ways the same that I get from walking through that curtain because you never know what’s going to happen in a match.”

On The Demands of His Schedule Leading to Him Making The Change: “I’ve always been the kind of wrestler, nine times out of 10, I would take a booking, no matter how much the travel is because I like to wrestle,” Richards said. “I want to get out there, and I want to stay on the top of my game and compete against the best people. The more bookings I take, the more I have to travel. It got to be too much. We’d fly to Seattle to leave David with my mom and then fly to Florida to do tapings and then fly from Florida to Seattle to get David. Then fly back home to St. Louis. Add in my school schedule, and it just became impossible. This is definitely for the best for right now. Maybe when I’m done with school, that will change.”

Former five-time TNA World Tag Team Champion Davey Richards revealed on Twitter that he has left GFW.

“Today I came to terms with GFW for me release,” Richards wrote. “This story however is a happy one. I have nothing but good memories and great things to say about my time there.”

Matt Morgan revealed on last night’s post-Battleground edition of the Wrestling Inc. podcast that he had also recently requested his release from GFW, while Nick “Magnus” Aldis confirmed his departure from the promotion last week. Richards noted that he was leaving pro wrestling to concentrate on medical school.

“Truth is- I love wrestling,” Richards stated. “But my goal is to be a Doctor. I have managed my time in doing both my school, my job as a Paramedic, being a dad, and a wrestler as best I could for as long as I could. But the demands as I head into the last couple years of Medical School have brought me to a point where I have to choose one or another. So with GFW’s blessing I have chosen medical school.”

Richards had talked about leaving pro wrestling in 2010 to move on to other things, but changed his mind. He is married to fellow GFW star Angelina Love.

There has been a lot of speculation about TNA Tag Team Champions The Wolves possibly talking with WWE once their deals expire soon. We do know there was recent WWE interest in the two but they will not be signing with NXT as they have re-signed with TNA, according to PWInsider.

TNA was looking to lock-in several of their top talents and this is a part of that. Eddie Edwards and Davey Richards have reportedly re-signed exclusive deals with the company but TNA does have the right to book The Wolves with indies and international companies as third party bookings.

Davey Richards, one half the TNA World Tag Team Champions, The Wolves, has suffered a broken leg. F4WOnline reports that TNA is going to wait & see before making any decision about what to do about The Wolves & their TNA World Tag Team Titles because TNA is taping enough footage to carry them through September 25th.

If his injury isn’t too bad, they will keep the titles but if for some reason Richards has to be out for a few months, The Wolves will be stripped of the titles.
