Post SummerSlam Comments and Recap

The 25th Anniversary edition of Summerslam is now in the books and in my humble opinion it was a solid but unspectacular PPV. Some excellent matches and then there was the FIGHT that took place between HHH and Brock Lesnar. All in all, I believe we got our money’s worth and that’s what we deserve.

Here’s a recap of the matches and the winners. My comments will be in red and italics.

Pre-show:

Antonio Cesaro def. United States Champion Santino Marella

Cesaro was impressive and the humorous spot in the match was when Marella pulled out the 2nd Cobra from the rear of his tights and the announcer saying “That’s what you call a backup plan”.

Chris Jericho def. Dolph Ziggler

My personal favorite match of the night – not the best match of the night, but my favorite. I make no bones about being a huge Jericho fan, and both he and Dolph put it all on the line for us fans. It was good to see Jericho prove Ziggler wrong about not being able to win the big one any more. Right after the PPV ended, Zigglar touted his demand for a rematach. http://www.tout.com/m/yzzs1v

Daniel Bryan def. Kane

I had to step away during this match so I will let WWE.com give this recap: At SummerSlam, two hotheads collided as Daniel Bryan defeated Kane in a thrilling back-and-forth encounter that had both Superstars seeing red.

Intercontinental Champion The Miz def. Rey Mysterio

Great work by both superstars! Nothing more to add than you know The Miz is a great heel, because I can’t stand him!

World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus def. Alberto Del Rio

Can’t really believe I’m typing this, but Sheamus stole this one from Del Rio. Rodriquez attempted to throw a shoe to Del Rio but instead, Sheamus caught it and blasted Del Rio with it. Then on the cover, the referee missed Del Rio’s leg on the rope as Sheamus pulled his leg down after the 3 count so the ref wouldn’t see it.

WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & R-Truth def. The Prime Time Players

I will just take this quote directly from our live blog tonight:  “Truth and Kofi retain! What a cross body from Kofi on Titus from the top turn buckle to the floor just before the pin by Truth”. WWE Champion CM Punk def. John Cena, Big Show

Show pretty much dominated until both Punk and Cena applied submission holds AT THE SAME TIME on the giant. Show tapped out, but referee didn’t know what to do. Hit Raw GM AJ Lee’s music. She skips to the ring in her business suit, and after Punk gave us a plug (well not really, but he told AJ to Do The Right Thing), she said RESTART THE MATCH, and that included Big Show who had tapped out. Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment on Big Show, but Punk quickly threw Cena out of ring and pinned Show to retain the title. Not sure Punk is going to gain that RESPECT he wanted from Cena when Cena did the work and Punk got the pin. That’s a Triple Threat Match for you though.

It should also be noted that earlier in the match Cena was about to do U Can’t C Me on Big Show when Punk broke it up and then mocked Cena by waving his own hand in front of his face while laughing at Cena.

I have no inside information, but I’m thinking Punk vs Cena tomorrow night for the main event on Raw. We’ll see if I’m right.

Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar

Ok, this wasn’t a match, it was a fight. That’s what Lesnar said it would be and that is what it was. The Game held his own and when he hit his second Pedigree on Lesnar it looked like The Cerebral Assassin might pull of the stunning upset. However, Lesnar had worked over HHH’s left arm all night and when he once again locked in the submission hold that had broken both The Game’s and HBK’s arms – HHH tapped out.

Some random observations on the match: the crowd was mostly quiet during the match, which I believe was because they were in awe of how brutal this match was; for those who think this is all fake – I would ask how did Lesnar get those big whelps under each eye; The Game seemed to be apologizing and tearing up after refusing medical attention on his left arm; Michael Cole asks if this is the end of Triple H. I was a little disappointed in the crowd chanting “You tapped out” as Hunter stayed alone in the ring at the end of the PPV.

There you have it folks. As I said earlier, a solid PPV. I wish they would have used Raw GM AJ Lee a little better tonight. Her one line of restart the match was uneventful and her talent is much better than being under used that way, and besides with Big Show tapping out, why didn’t they have Cena and Punk finish one on one? I didn’t care for the end of the Sheamus vs Del Rio match either. It just didn’t feel right to me. Other than that, put another great big thank you down to the WWE for providing a great evening of Sports Entertainment!

Paul Heyman Talks Via Twitter

Like Paul Heyman or not, he definately knows the Professional Wrestling business inside and out. I’ve got to admit that I’ve heard a couple of the rumors he talks about in the this post from PWMania.com.

Ed

Paul Heyman Rants: His WWE Return, Brock’s WWE Contract, Working With CM Punk

Paul Heyman posted the following rant on Twitter on Thursday afternoon, setting the record straight on his status with WWE, Brock Lesnar’s contract situation, rumors of him working with WWE Champion CM Punk & more:

“It is amazing how many rumors are flying around. I don’t like to address rumors. It lends credibility to them, and the moment you answer ONE rumor, you immediately call attention to the other rumors (no matter how ridiculous they are) by NOT responding!

We’re going to clear up some issues. Set the record straight. Get some people “on point,” and stir some things up!

Brock’s theory of “let them speculate” seems to be a damn smart one, and I certainly see the merits of that position.

HOWEVER (aha! There is a “but” involved here)… Just to address two items that so many people seem to be giving credence to.

@CMPunk and I have NOT pitched the idea of being aligned to anyone. If we did, you wouldn’t know about it. Did anyone know I was coming back on May 7th as Brock’s representative? NO ONE KNEW! So if @CMPunk and I have … or had .. or will have a plan … I assure you, it would have / will play out in front of your very eyes. @CMPunk doesn’t need an advocate. Nor a spokesman. Nor a representative. That’s not his character. Brock’s character totally different.

The other rumor to address … Whether @WWE is interested in extending my deal, Brock’s deal, etc. Not one single person has hit the nail on Brock’s deal with @WWE … and that’s the way Brock likes it! … and since NO ONE knows what my deal is, it would be impossible for anyone to state with certainty what my situation IS … or ISN’T! And, just for the record, I’m not discussing it.

Here’s my reasoning for it … When I left @WWE in 2006, I thought I was done. Gone. Never to return. I loved working with Brock on his book. Building #Looking4Larry with @MStuart777 has been a total blast! The @HeymanHustle website and digital program has been the cornerstone of our agency, and we love doing it.

This whole deal has been a surprise. A surprise for you. A surprise for my kids. A surprise for the WWE Universe. A surprise for ME, too. Enjoy the ride. Watch it unfold. See what happens. For the first time in forever, we have people GUESSING what comes next. If for no other reason but THAT, there’s nothing 2 discuss. You know there’s a heavily-promoted match this Sunday at @WWE #SummerSlam.

You’ve seen @ShawnMichaels, Stephanie McMahon, all our CHILDREN be a part of this main event. Now it comes down to Brock Lesnar vs HHH. If we’ve sold you on buying the ppv, I bet you get your money’s worth on this match alone. If we haven’t sold you on the ppv yet, then thank you for your time, and I hope something else has captured your attention or imagination.

Brock and I are “all-in” for this Sunday. And just based on what his future holds, HHH is “all-in,” too. This is a match everyone wants you to remember.

So … I’m not addressing any more rumors. I’m not confirming. I’m not denying. I’m focused on this Sunday … … and I’m looking forward to watching Brock and HHH live up to, and indeed EXCEED everyone’s expectations.

Is this hype? Yes. But it’s Hype routed in TRUTH. Is this a rant? A diatribe? A long-winded TwitSpeech? Absolutely! Hope you liked it.”

One thing about the wrestling business that keeps us guessing – when is something real and when is it a work? Paul says that he and Punk have nothing going on, and maybe they don’t, however – I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t walk away arm in arm at SummerSlam or the next night on RAW. Gotta keep us fans hooked!

As The Game held back, Lesnar appeared to snap the arm of Shawn Michaels. Go here to read Trevor’s take on the final segment.

Viewpoint: Ed’s Take on #Raw1000

After live blogging for 3 hours and 15 minutes last night and having a blast doing it, how do I start with this post. My favorite moment (several), favorite match (again, more than one), biggest surprise (two huge ones, so I don’t know which to choose), best segment (it would be easy to say the entire show). So where do I go?

How about THANK YOU WWE and your entire staff, AND THANK YOU Mr. McMahon for what you did for us – the fans of the WWE Universe!

Check out how The Boss opened the show. And for everyone who thinks he is arrogant and cocky, this may shock you. How could Vince have been more humble than this:

Trevor has already hit on these two shockers – #Raw1000 Shockers: AJ Named Raw GM (@WWEAJLee) and #Raw1000 Shockers: C.M. Punk Turns Heel, WWE Universe Filled With Shock, Anger (VIDEO) (@CMPUNK) so I want to hit on three parts of the show that I think will go down in my own personal #Raw1000 memory bank.

First, is the DX reunion (PG Version). Of course it was great when HHH and HBK came out, but I really popped loud when HHH said, “Didn’t there used to be more of us”? Out comes The Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, and X-Pac and the band was back together. Check it out here:

Next let me share with you the Legends moment of the night where Lita was Heath Slater’s opponent but after Slater got a little over confident – she brings out the APA, yes Ron Simmons and JBL. That sent Slater headed back up the ramp but then, blearing from the speakers comes the words, “Whhhhhaaattttt A Rush”, that’s right Road Warrior Animal and ALL the Legends that have had a part in the weekly Heath Slater beat downs come down the ramp and throw Slater back into the ring. Aww heck, the video says it way better than I can so I will end this part with ONE word, Ron Simmons style – DAMN!!!!

Ok I do have to add, didn’t Lita look awesome with the Twist of Fate and the Moonsault from the top rope.

Finally, I loved the HHH/Brock Lesnar segment, and it may have been Paul Heyman and Stephanie McMahon who stole the segment, that and HHH clotheslining Lesnar over the top rope and out of the ring.

Ok, I can’t keep it to just three – I’ve got to include the “cold chill” moment of the night – the reunion of the Brothers of Destruction, The Undertaker and Kane.

So many more great moments that you can go see here at WWE’s Official YouTube Destination.

Again, THANK YOU WWE for an awesome night at #Raw1000.
