AAA Announces TripleMania Regia, Featuring JBL, WWE and TNA Talent — Just Days Before AEW’s Mexico Debut

Mexican promotion AAA is ramping up its presence on the wrestling calendar in a major way. During a press conference this week, the legendary Mexican promotion announced TripleMania Regia, set for June 15, 2025, at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. The event is shaping up to be a massive showcase — not just for AAA’s homegrown talent, but also for stars from TNA Wrestling and WWE.

This will mark the first major event held under AAA’s new ownership umbrella, as WWE continues to finalize its acquisition of the lucha libre promotion. Thanks to that developing relationship, several WWE names are already confirmed for the card. Tag team duo Humberto Carrillo and Angel Garza — both of whom have history in AAA — are officially set to appear, alongside AAA stalwarts like Alberto El Patrón, Psycho Clown, and Hijo del Vikingo. WWE Hall of Famer JBL is also advertised to appear, having made prior guest appearances with the promotion.

Though no matches have been announced yet, the inclusion of talent from TNA (via their ongoing partnership with WWE) adds another layer of intrigue to the event. With the newly revived Worlds Collide set to take place just one week earlier on June 7 at the Kia Forum in California, TripleMania Regia could serve as a follow-up celebration of cross-promotional wrestling with deep international flavor.

But not everyone is thrilled with the timing.

The June 15 date has stirred controversy, as it lands just three days before AEW is scheduled to host its first-ever television event in Mexico, AEW Grand Slam Mexico, on June 18 at Arena Mexico. The overlap hasn’t gone unnoticed, with AEW’s Tony Schiavone taking a jab at the timing, implying AAA and WWE’s announcement may have been a strategic counter.

Meanwhile, WWE is leaning into lucha tradition as it looks to bolster its foothold in the Latin American market. Rey Mysterio — a WWE Hall of Famer and a longtime fixture in AAA — recently appeared in promotional material for Worlds Collide, highlighting lucha libre’s cultural legacy and its influence on global wrestling.

With TripleMania Regia now positioned as a tentpole event for both AAA and WWE’s partnership, all eyes will be on how the card shapes up — and how AEW responds in its bid to gain traction in Mexico.

Penta El Zero Miedo Bids Farewell to Mexico Amid AEW Exit, WWE Rumors Swirl

Former AEW World Tag Team Champion Penta El Zero Miedo has officially made waves outside of AEW following his recent contract expiration. The masked star shocked fans with a surprise appearance in AAA, where he delivered an emotional goodbye to his supporters in Mexico—though he promised a return at some point in the future.

Penta’s departure from AEW marks the end of a five-year journey with Tony Khan’s promotion, but it didn’t come without controversy. The Lucha Brothers—Penta and his brother Rey Fenix—haven’t appeared on AEW programming since August, fueling speculation about backstage tension. Now, with Penta gone and Fenix still under contract due to injury time extensions, their once-dominant AEW run appears fractured.

Fenix, in particular, has been vocal about his frustrations with AEW, recently taking to social media to call out the company for what he described as “inhumane treatment.” He also alleged that AEW ignored his medical needs for months during his recovery. With Penta’s exit and Fenix still embroiled in this tense situation, the brothers’ futures remain a hot topic in the wrestling world.

The intrigue surrounding Penta doesn’t stop there. WWE has reportedly expressed significant interest in signing both Penta and Rey Fenix, adding to the speculation that the Lucha Brothers could be on the verge of joining the global powerhouse. Penta, however, isn’t short on suitors. Multiple promotions are said to have reached out with offers, reflecting his value as both an in-ring performer and an international star.

Penta’s résumé speaks for itself. Before his AEW stint, he made his mark in TNA Wrestling—now Impact Wrestling—where he held the Impact World Championship. His unique blend of charisma, high-flying moves, and hard-hitting style has made him a fan favorite wherever he’s competed.

While Penta bids farewell to AEW and Mexico for now, the wrestling landscape is ripe for his next move. Whether he reunites with his brother under WWE’s banner or explores other opportunities, Penta El Zero Miedo’s future promises to be as exciting as his career thus far.

Stay tuned for updates on where Penta lands next and whether we’ll see the Lucha Brothers dominate a new stage together.

AAA Is Finished Putting Championships On AEW Wrestlers

Don’t expect to see AEW talent draped in championship gold from AAA, with the possible exception of Kenny Omega.

At the recent Noche de Campeones event, FTR lost the AAA World Tag Team Championships to Dralistico and Dragon Lee, the latter of whom announced his WWE deal shortly after.

Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo were stripped of the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championships after Melo was pulled from the event.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AAA is finished putting titles on AEW talent for the time being due to the difficulties with booking them.

“Right now the plan is that unless it’s Kenny Omega, who they still want as their Mega champion because of his work and name value if they can get dates on him, they don’t want titles on AEW wrestlers because of the difficulty in confirming dates on them.”

Instead of appearing for AAA, Melo competed on this week’s Dynamite, teaming with Anna Jay to defeat Ruby Soho and Willow Nightingale.

The Hardys Announced For AAA’s TripleMania XXX

The AEW involvement in AAA’s TripleMania XXX events in 2022 will now include the Hardys

Announced at a press conference held in Tijuana on Tuesday afternoon, Matt and Jeff Hardy will compete at the second TripleMania XXX event in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico on June 18. They will take on former Ring of Honor star Dragon Lee and former CMLL star Dralistico, themselves a brother tag team.

The Hardy Boyz become the eighth and ninth AEW stars to compete on one of the three TripleMania XXX shows taking place in 2022. Andrade, Penta El Zero Miedo, Rey Fenix, Sammy Guevara, Tay Conti and the Young Bucks are all scheduled for the first TripleMania XXX event in Monterrey on April 30. The Young Bucks will headline the event against Fenix and AAA Mega Champion Hijo del Vikingo.

Missing are AEW team FTR, who are the current AAA World Tag Team Champions. It is unknown if they will be added to the Tijuana event or TripleMania XXX in Mexico City this October. Last week the Young Bucks declared they’d be returning to AAA as AAA World Tag Team Champions, indicating a potential title match with FTR soon on AEW TV.

This will be Jeff Hardy’s first appearance in AAA and Matt Hardy’s second; he previously competed in AAA’s Lucha Libre World Cup in 2015, where he, Johnny Mundo (John Morrison), and Mr. Anderson reached the finals as Team USA before losing to Team AAA (Alberto El Patron, Myzteziz and Rey Mysterio).

The brothers also have competed for lucha libre promotion The Crash, where they won the promotion’s tag team titles in 2017.

In addition to the Hardy Boyz vs. Dragon Lee and Dralistico, TripleMania XXX in Tijuana will feature the semi-finals of the ongoing mask vs. mask tournament featuring El Canek vs. Psycho Clown, LA Park vs. Villano IV, Blue Demon Jr. vs. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and Penta vs. Ultimo Dragon. The losers of each match will move onto the semi-finals, and the losers of the semi-finals match will then compete in a mask vs. mask match at TripleMania XXX in Mexico City this October.

At today’s press conference, AAA President Dorian Roldan revealed that all the winners in the first round of the mask tournament at TripleMania XXX Monterrey will take part at TripleMania XXX Tijuana. No other matches were announced. As with AAA TripleMania XXX Monterrey, AAA TripleMania XXX Tijuana will air on FITE TV, with English and Spanish commentary.

Dorian Roldán On How Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide Running MSG Is Just The Beginning In U.S. Expansion

Managing director Dorian Roldán will see a family dream realized when Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide debuts at Madison Square Garden on September 15. One of the aspirations his uncle and promotion founder Antonio Peña had when he produced a show in the Paramount Theater. This is taking it a step further by running the most famous arena in the world.

“I think for any entertainment company in the world, all of us share that dream that is to be in that iconic venue,” Roldán said. “Speaking about this show in particularly, it was a long process. We have been in discussions with Madison Square Garden for several years. At least in the last couple of years, we have been really much more aggressive trying to close a deal. We were trying to enter since the last year. We were in a position to book the venue a year ago, to make the show in 2018. But we weren’t prepared or in a trustful position to be successful.

“So, we decided to push the show to this year and have the ticket sales on Cinco De Mayo, to be on September 15. For that to be the night we celebrate our Independence Day. I think it was a really good position to push a show. I think we are in a different stage. We have really professional talents working with us. We are in that time to make decisions to make the company more global. This is our statement that we are entering America in a different way, a more professional way and in the most iconic place that is the Madison Square Garden.”

The executive felt the goosebumps when the company made the formal announcement during a press conference. All of sudden, it became real.

“If you told me we would produce a show five years ago at the Madison Square Garden, I would have told you that you were crazy. It’s a challenge. We need to be ready,” he said. “I think we are being really aggressive in the manner entering in one of the most competitive markets in the world and the U.S. We are not testing. Entering in not just the most iconic but most expensive venue in the world. Trying to bring our brand, trying to bring AAA, our luchadores, a totally different concept that what Americans are used to in the wrestling industry. I think we are really confident about what we are going to present. But also, with that challenge we want to give the best product. We want to stay in the U.S. market and make the next step for the company.”

AAA is open to collaborating with promotions from around the world. The mindset Roldán shares is that when people work together, it can only make the industry bigger and stronger. He teases talent representatives from other companies would be working the show but couldn’t reveal too many details that are still being finalized.

“We made the announcement with Tony Khan and his team at AEW. We also have a really good relationship with the people from Impact. I was personally there at the Ring of Honor for the last event they had at Madison Square Garden. I said hello to Joe Koff,” he said. “Of course, we are competitors, but I think at the end of the day we want, and need have alliances.

“We need to give the fans what they want to watch and see. We also know our fans that day are going to be the Mexican community. We are also having conversations with talent that was in AAA before and was important for the Mexican families, and maybe to be part of that lineup for that day.”

Attending the G1 Supercard gave him a chance to take in a pro wrestling show from a fan and office perspective. He felt Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling set the bar high.

“The people’s reaction was really good. As I sat as a fan, I really enjoyed the show. Of course, part of my team was there. We also did some scouting on how to produce a show in Madison Square Garden. We learned a lot about it,” Roldán said. “We got an idea of what we can do. My only words to Ring of Honor for the event they produce, I can only say congratulations to them. It was really amazing. They do a good job, and they really do a good job in the industry. As Joe talked to me, we are next in entering Madison Square Garden. Let’s see what happens. We are going to try to have the people enjoy the show and even bring them back to Mexico and to see a little bit of the Mexican nostalgia with some of the wrestlers and talent we are going to take to America.”

Beyond their programming on Spanish language channels, AAA has also been able to grow its audience and visibility thanks to their deal with Twitch. Organizers want to maximize the number of eyes that can see the MSG event.

“We are having conversations with the most important Spanish TV networks, but we are right now not able to reveal the terms of how it’s going to work. We are also having conversations with local television to make the show available and with digital platforms to make this available on a worldwide basis,” Roldán said.

“It’s not part of our Twitch deal. It’s not going to be available on Twitch. It was not on there when we signed the Twitch deal, so it’s not there. It’s also going, of course, be captured in Mexico. We are also finalizing the final terms with our current partners in media.”

Roldán speaks highly of Konnan’s creative vision, even referring to him as “one of the best bookers in the world.” He will have the arduous task of deciding what matches are on this momentous card. Expect a mix of the top stars of lucha with legends sprinkled in.

“It’s not an easy job because at the end of the day, there are many different kinds of wrestling fans,” he said. “The wrestling fan who likes the comedy, the fan who likes a very good quality match. We also need to satisfy the Mexican community. It’s going to be interesting. We think we are in a position right now to have the talent that can satisfy the different kinds of fans.”

For Roldán, The Garden is the catalyst toward the long-term goal of AAA expanding in the market. Producing more than 40 events through the year, his hope is to bring the product to America in a different way than the brand has done ever before.

“The most important thing is we are not by ourselves. We have a really good relationships and partnerships with those who know the live events market,” he said. “The first step and short-term is to have a really good show in the Madison Square Garden that can open possibilities to produce other events in other markets.

“The second one for example is giving an announcement really soon of a second venue we are going to produce this year. Another show from AAA. At the end of the day, what we are trying to do and discussion this week is to at least produce 10 shows in America, during the summer. It’s part of the plan we have in mind right now.”

Roldan’s full interview with Wrestling Inc was included on Wednesday’s episode of their WINCLY podcast.
