Paige VanZant Finishes As Runner-Up On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Source: MMAFighting.com

Paige VanZant, the popular UFC fighter, finished second on this season of “Dancing With The Stars” on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. VanZant and partner Mark Ballas earned a perfect score of 30 for their salsa-jiva amalgamation on the second night of the finals, but it was not enough. Deaf male model Nyle DiMarco and his partner Peta Murgatroyd took home the title when the scores and fan votes were combined.

VanZant and Ballas got a 29 out of 30 with a paso doble routine Monday on the first night of the “DWTS” finale. DiMarco and Murgatroyd earned perfect scores of 30 both nights this week. Ginger Zee and dancer Val Chmerkovskiy came in third.

UFC Hall of Famers Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture both competed on “Dancing With The Stars,” but didn’t make it nearly as far as VanZant.

VanZant, 22, made six figures for appearing on the show and even more for making the semifinals and finals. Despite the loss, “DWTS” was also a boon for her mainstream popularity and social media engagement.

“12 Gauge” is a rising star in the UFC’s women’s strawweight division. She has a background in dancing, modeling and acting. This week, news broke that VanZant earned a role in the next Jean-Claude Van Damme “Kickboxer” sequel due to her performances and personality on “Dancing With The Stars.”

WWE Smackdown Going Live — Brand Split Returns

WWE announced today that WWE SmackDown will be airing live on Tuesday nights on the USA Network starting July 19th. It was also revealed that the show will have its own roster and storylines.

Here is the full statement that WWE sent us this morning:

SMACKDOWN GOING LIVE ON USA NETWORK BEGINNING TUESDAY, JULY 19

SMACKDOWN to Feature Distinct Roster and Storylines

NEW YORK and STAMFORD, CONN – May 25, 2016 — USA Network, the exclusive cable home to WWE’s marquee properties, announced that its weekly SMACKDOWN show will air live – for the first time ever – and move to Tuesdays every week beginning July 19 from 8-10PM ET/PT. With the SMACKDOWN move, USA Network will now offer five hours of live WWE programming a week, including the weekly three-hour live WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW (airing Mondays from 8-11PM ET/PT), with each show featuring a distinct cast, unique storylines and a dedicated writing team.

In 2016 to date, MONDAY NIGHT RAW is averaging 4.011MM total viewers, 1.873MM P25-54 and 1.846MM P18-49 L7, and SMACKDOWN in its current time slot is averaging 2.674MM P2+, 1.136MM P25-54, and 1.058MM P18-49+ L7, making USA the #1 cable entertainment network across the key demos on Monday and Thursday nights. In 2015, the two programs combined reached over 50MM viewers. Both shows will now air live 52 weeks a year.

“The fan base for our WWE shows is one of the most passionate and engaged audiences in all of entertainment,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “There is a huge appetite among our viewers for live programming, and the ability to move SMACKDOWN to a live format brings a new level of excitement and helps truly eventize this every week.”

“WWE’s flagship programs will both leverage the incredible depth of our talent roster, distinct storylines and the unpredictable nature of live TV,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “This move will undoubtedly build more excitement and deepen engagement with our fans around the world.”

Update:

There will be a WWE Draft held soon but we do not know exactly when that it will be. WWE’s announcement said it will come before the live premiere on July 19th.

Kane Running For Mayor In Knox County, Tennessee?

Source: WrestlingINC

Kane (Glenn Jacobs) spoke with the local NBC affiliate in Knoxville, Tennessee and said he’s seriously considering a run as a Republican for the Knox County mayoral seat in 2018. Kane says he will make his decision later this year after the presidential election. He commented:

“Yes, I’ve talked about it with some folks but there’s nothing too solid yet. Mayor Burchett’s term is coming up and I think he’s been really good for Knox County. I think the most important thing is I care very deeply about this community, like a lot of people do. And that’s the only reason I would consider getting into any sort of government because I do care very deeply. And I think it’s incumbent upon people who care about the communities to try to make a difference.”

Kane is apparently running on keeping county taxes low. He said:

“What I’ve seen in Knox County the past several years is that taxes have remained low because it’s a great place to live. People move here and that helps expands the tax base. My political philosophy is the ‘smaller the better. Government should stay out of the way and let free enterprise do what it does best.”

It would be an interesting career change for Kane as the county mayor earns around $170,000 annually and oversees almost 1,000 employees with a more than $750 million budget.

Up Up Down Down? Xavier Woods Goes Full ‘Street Fighter’ During Match

Source: FOX Sports

The New Day retained their tag team titles at Extreme Rules with a win over The Vaudevillains, and Xavier Woods pulled off a tribute to one of his favorite video games during the match.

Woods is a huge gamer – he runs a YouTube gaming channel with more than 500,000 subscribers and has played the Final Fantasy VII victory theme on his trombone during matches – and shortly after starting off Sunday night’s match against Aiden English unleashed a move straight out of Ryu’s arsenal.

Pop TV President Says They Aren’t Canceling TNA Impact Wrestling

Source: WrestlingINC

Pop TV President Brad Schwartz was interviewed recently by PWInsider. You can check out some of the highlights below:

TNA not being mentioned at Upfronts:

“Yeah, I appreciate. I’ve seen all the chatter as well and I’ve got to say, as someone who has spent my career in the pop culture space and I have a big music background and music TV background, so I know what the passion of fans is like and it is amazing the passion and I love it. I love the good, I love the bad and I love the ugly. It’s amazing and I think it’s the most passionate group of fans that I’ve ever come across. I absolutely love the passion that is out there, but you’re right, sometimes people make assumptions or they hear something or read something and they pile on. So, to answer your question just point blank – our relationship with Impact is amazing. I love the show every Tuesday night. My relationship with [TNA President] Dixie [Carter] is very special and ultimately, I think the product that is going on the air every Tuesday night is the best wrestling product going. The characters, the ring action, it is amazing to watch. Obviously it’s now part of my job to watch every week as I do with all of our original programming and I’m sucked in. Every single Tuesday I need to watch the show because I am sucked in and we’re excited about it. It’s the second highest rated show on our network. I don’t know of too many people that are successful in television getting rid of the second highest rated show on their network. For us, we’re excited. We have a long term deal with Impact and you know, until there are twenty different shows doing better than it, it’s going to stay where it is for awhile.

TNA replays getting pulled:

“Yeah, that’s a great question and again, I love the passion when people out there see that and just jump to conclusions. So, I’ll just give the explanation from a pure programming standpoint. So, when we started the relationship, obviously Impact was new on POP and we wanted to let as many people as possible have an opportunity to find it as possible and so, you want to premiere it and then you want to repeat it so that, more people can know it’s on and start to make an appointment tuning into it. Television has changed over the last five years, the last three years, the last two years with Video on Demand and delayed viewing and DVRs, it’s like repeats across every network just don’t make as much sense as they used to. With people consuming content on their own terms, the whole idea of repeats just doesn’t make as much sense. From a marketing standpoint, we wanted to attract and we wanted to try to suck in people flipping channels and try to encourage and find as much of that as possible. We did that for three, three and a half months and then we decided, ‘OK, people know it’s Tuesdays at nine o’clock now, everything’s going well, we don’t need that repeat anymore.’ People are DVRing it, people are Video on Demand-ing it, people are watching it live. So, then, again from a marketing perspective, we thought that maybe we move the repeat to the weekend, we’ll be able to find some new viewers. People who are flipping on the weekend and looking for something on Saturday mornings. There was a little bit of nostalgia for me personally because when I was growing up in Canada, I used to watch wrestling on Saturday mornings So, I said, let’s try that. Let’s see if we can find some new viewers who aren’t watching on Tuesday. We did that for four weeks, five weeks and I think it worked a little but ultimately, it wasn’t performing as well as other content that we could have in that timeslot could perform and frankly, we didn’t market it at all. We were literally hoping it would find people. So, the plan all along was to have one big, appointment viewed, two hour show where people can all watch live and social media and people can all chatter and talk all about it as possible and if you can’t make it Tuesdays at nine, then via Video on Demand or via DVR delayed viewing, that’s how you’re going to watch it if you aren’t going to watch Tuesday at nine and that’s it. All of our other original programming, Schitt’s Creek, Rock This Boat, Sing it On, these shows are all do very well in their premieres and then they pick up a lot of viewers in delayed viewing but across all networks, repeats just do not work. They used to, as recently as five years ago.

If POP has a say in Impact programming:

“I have to say, one of the things that has been part of my success in my career in general is, I kind of have a philosophy of ‘hire good people and then let good people go do good things.’ and to that extent, Dixie and her team, they know wrestling and they know the athletes and the stars and they know how to put that together. We have had little to no impact on the creative process of what they are doing. We love what they are doing and I’m glad you said it, because I was going to say the same thing. Depending on the week, there is no better wrestling action on television than what they are putting on. The characters and the in-ring action, it’s amazing. Like you said, some shows are better than others, but that’s true. That’s true of others. That’s true of any sporting event and that’s true of any television program but damn, they are doing a fantastic job. Forget about the business side. I watch every Tuesday night and I get sucked in because A – I know I am going to talk to Dixie that week and B – I’m really loving it. Whether’s it’s Lashley or EC3 or Galloway or the Hardys, they are amazing. We’ve had no impact creatively at all. We are really enjoying the relationship. We are really enjoying the content every week. I wish I could take credit for it, but I’m going to give credit where credit’s due and they’re putting on a great product this year.”

If TNA will be on Pop TV in September:

“Absolutely. Absolutely. We have a multi-year deal and we should probably address that one thing from the Upfronts announcement. What Upfronts are…Upfronts are not necessarily something for the public. It’s an ad-sales driven event. It’s where all the networks sell 70-90% of their ad inventory for the year, so the announcements you make at your Upfronts are really to support what your ad sales team is going out and selling and when it comes to Impact, because it’s such a unique audience with a unique, live component or an alive component to it, there are sponsorship abilities to that that aren’t just in ring sponsorships, show sponsorships and of course, advertising, it’s kind of a 360 degree sell. We have, us and Impact, have a third-party company that is selling those integrations and those sponsorships and so it wasn’t something that the POP ad sales team was out there in the marketplace doing. As far as the rest of our network, we kind of sell a women’s 25-54 demo, we sell an adult 18-49 demo. We really needed a different company with a different client list and a different set of skills to sell 360 degree sponsorships and integrations as the real way to kind of drive some revenue, additional and incremental revenue. That’s the only reason [Impact Wrestling] wasn’t in our Upfronts release, because our team isn’t selling it. From a programming standpoint, yes, it will be on the air. We aren’t going to get rid of the second highest rated show on the Network.”

Backstage News On Cody Rhodes’ WWE Release

Source: WrestlingINC

As noted, Cody Rhodes requested and received his WWE release over the weekend.

In Rhodes’ statement that he posted online yesterday, Rhodes mentioned that he had “pleaded with WWE Creative” to drop the Stardust character and become Cody Rhodes again. He wrote:

In the past 6-months I had pleaded with WWE Creative and both of my bosses to let me roll-the-dice and once again be Cody Rhodes. I had pitched to every writer on the staff like a door-to-door salesman on “how” & “why” & “when”…and believe me, there are many of those who sought to help me (Brian James, Nick, Faz, J Russo, Dave K, JBL & Cole for letting me go wild on their YouTube show and a few others I’m sure) but for all that, both “head writers” of RAW & Smackdown (one pretending to be Brian Gewirtz and the other too busy hitting on developmental divas) continued to not return my pitches or e-mails, and in face-to-face encounters tried to big league me by pretending to be on their clearly powered-off laptops…barely willing to listen to an idea I considered beneficial to more than one talent. What’s that expression? Don’t take no for an answer…what do you do when you don’t get an answer at all?

You may recall back in March that Rhodes started teasing the end of the Stardust character on social media. Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline noted on the most recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that the plan was in fact for Rhodes to drop the Stardust gimmick right around WrestleMania 32 – or the night after – and go back to simply being Cody Rhodes.

“Vince McMahon and Triple H – and it was more Vince McMahon on this one, from what I was told – they decided [that] we’re not going to do it,” Meltzer said.

Meltzer noted that despite being released by WWE, Rhodes is still being held to his WWE contract and the split is “not amicable.” Meltzer said that WWE is “kind of putting the screws to him,” and that since Rhodes quit, they are trying to make it hard for him contractually to do anything for another wrestling company.

In case you missed it over the weekend, below is Rhodes’ full statement regarding his WWE departure:

The statement reads:

“Setting foot in the dingy ol’ Greensboro Coliseum this past Monday can only be described for me as just a whimsical moment of clarity. At this point, most folks know that I have indeed asked for my release from World Wrestling Entertainment, but it’s paramount in my mind for the fans of pro-wrestling to have some answers and not be left with questions. A many superlative can be used to describe my mentor in wrestling, but one I often forget about is…fearless. And it’s a trait I wish more of had been passed down my way.

So there I was, standing in the very same locker-room Ric Flair had dressed in before changing the wrestling/PPV(closed-circuit at the time) game forever and capturing the NWA Title at Starrcade 83′, “a Flair for the gold”; it’s sad that after once again being benched off TV that my fate in said spot was instead to be relegated to watching a monitor advertising a returning star and kicking open my tumi gear bag to find an outfit I had long outgrown and a face-paint kit. Both HHH and Vince McMahon have given me many fun and challenging opportunities in my career, and I showed my gratitude by always pushing for the best segment I could create, the most interest I could generate. They gave me the chance to train on the job with some of the most brilliant minds in our world (gentlemen like Arn Anderson and Fit Finlay). I would do this job for free, but that didn’t stop WWE from always compensating me in a generous manner. My goal in pro-wrestling has always been to win the WWE Championship (the one accolade in the game my Father never obtained), and for a decade I tried to convince both Vince and HHH that I could be their star-player, their varsity quarterback if you will, but it seems we have reached the point where neither saw that in me. I sincerely appreciate HHH’s unflinching respect for my Father, and how he has acted as a custodian of history in honoring him since his passing. He did not owe me that same respect he gave Dream, but I thought I could earn it in time. One of the last discussions we had included him telling me that “wwe is a play, and everybody has their role and needs to act it their best”. All I can think of to say to that is, “the best actors don’t want the lesser roles”. In the past 6-months I had pleaded with WWE Creative adn both of my bosses to let me roll-the-dice and once again be Cody Rhodes. I had pitched to every writer on the staff like a door-to-door salesman on “how” & “why” & “when”…and believe me, there are many of those who sought to help me (Brian James, Nick, Faz, J Russo, Dave K, JBL&Cole for letting me go wild on their YouTube show and a few others I’m sure) but for all that, both “head writers” of RAW & Smackdown (one pretending to be Brian Gewirtz and the other too busy hitting on developmental divas) continued to not return my pitches or e-mails, and in face-to-face encounters tried to big league me by pretending to be on their clearly powered-off laptops…barely willing to listen to an idea I considered beneficial to more than one talent. What’s that expression? Don’t take no for an answer…what do you do when you don’t get an answer at all?

So there I was…having done everything I could possibly do for ten years to make the most out of both large opportunities and even the half-cocked ones like “paint-up like your Brother”. Chicken shit into chicken salad became my specialty; and with those worthy opportunities afforded me…I can only hope I fully executed. I’ve made the walk down the ramp at multiple WrestleManias, and I have had a WrestleMania match cancelled while I stood at the curtain moments before my music hit. I felt like I had a bag of those brass-rings and when it came time for me to cash them in, I find I can’t do so.

Like I said, Monday was whimsical…because I felt that fearlessness in my blood, even if just for a fleeting moment. I realized that I don’t need to sell myself to those two writers captaining a broken unrecognizable system, matter a fact with the time I had put in and the body of work I presented it should have been the other way around. I realized that blood is thicker than paint, that I know who I am and what I’m capable of…I’m not Dusty Rhodes. I’m a pro-wrestler. I am proud of that. It’s been said never to leave money on the table, but no money is worth being less than you are. Ask my wife, I don’t even read the check breakdowns…this was never about the money, this was always about the moments, and I’ll be dammed if my fathers legacy is “stardust” or a series of sizzle-reels for NXT. It’s not my job to pick up his sword. It’s my privilege.

I will miss many of the soldiers in that locker-room, some who I have earned their friendship. Guys like Cesaro, Zack Ryder, Tyler Breeze, KO, Harper, Kofi, Tye, the wasteland and the NC…keep that locker-room clean and keep having a better match than you’re supposed to, I do believe the cream rises and hard work prevails. My work just needs to be elsewhere. I want to thank both fans and critics of mine alike. There is no greater responsibility than having a fan who expects a level of entertainment from you, and there’s nothing more motivating than those who buy a ticket yet find something lacking (considering the first few CAW years of my career, I always took the criticism as more of a request and I made  what adjustments I could for the overall product). Again, from the BOTTOM OF MY HEART…thank you. Almost one year ago, the biggest light in my sky was ripped away from me when I lost my Father. It’s time for me to try and seek that illumination…that glow that’s still out there. This is not goodbye. There’s a whole world of film and television and the state that I might find I have a knack for(maybe I even already got an offer). As far as the future is concerned though, I’m a wrestler. So that’s what I’ll do…wrestle.”
