The Story Behind Stories

When Curtis Axel came out on Monday Night RAW last Monday, furious that he was never “officially” eliminated from the Royal Rumble, it served as a way of tying up a lose end to that storyline. Dean Ambrose came out and threw him over the top rope, thus “officially” eliminating Axel. While I was impressed with the closure given to that particular incident, the differences between Brock Lesnar and Daniel Bryan’s treatment as champion remains to have something that can be nitpicked. Triple H addressed Daniel Bryan’s injury and the fact that he had to constantly defend the title every 30 days.

Once again, there was no mention of why Brock can sit on the title for much longer than 30 days without stepping in a WWE arena but Daniel couldn’t. If there was a mention made that was somehow missed, there should be more emphasis placed on it. Does Brock have a special contract? Are the rules universal for all WWE World Heavyweight champions or not? Things like that can affect consistency in story lines and here’s to hoping that it can be sorted out more clearly the longer Brock has the title.

The Altered Road to WrestleMania?

It’s no surprise that the ending of the Royal Rumble was extremely controversial. While the fans were excited for someone new and exciting, they should have specified who they had in mind when it came to “pushing someone new.” Roman Reigns was not the one fans wanted to see win the Rumble, even though he is a “newer” member of the roster. #PushTheYoungAndNewTalent, right? From arguments that he wasn’t ready yet to fans’ resistance to accept someone that the WWE is “force-feeding” us if you will, last Monday’s RAW appeared to be attempting to fix the error.

Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan had a match, in which Bryan was victorious, and the winner will face Reigns at the new FastLane pay-per-view event where the winner from that match will go on to WrestleMania to face Brock Lesnar for the title. If Reigns wins, that means the original plans appear to remain in tact. If Bryan wins, that supports the notion that the WWE is listening to its fans and is actually altering the story lines in response to the resounding boos and negative feedback after Reigns’ victory, especially from the Royal Rumble crowd. Such a situation shows how WWE can be aware of its audience and how it deals with unexpected backlash.

The Royal Trouble with Reigns

The Royal Rumble is historically one of the most anticipated PPVs of the entire year. It ignites the Road to WrestleMania and sets the standard for what’s to come in the approaching months as well as how WrestleMania itself will be. However, this year the PPV was greeted with different emotions. For one thing, the triple threat match between Brock Lesnar, John Cena, and Seth Rollins for the WWE Championship easily stole the night and is very well in the running to be match of the year. From high spots to extreme displays of athletic abilities, it kept fans on the edge of the seat, and from the sound of the “THIS IS AWESOME” chants of the Philadelphia crowd, it’s not far off to say that it’s easily in the running for match of the year.

However, that all changed by the end of the night. The Royal Rumble match itself ended the PPV, and some may argue that the triple threat match should have been the closer, leaving fans with excitement in their minds as opposed to fans potentially being upset with only a mere 1 in 30 chance of their favorite winning. Realistically, names like Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose, and Daniel Bryan were more believed to be the winner, but there was always the thought of Roman Reigns. After all, he threw out wrestler after wrestler last year so was easily in the running to be a favorite.

While the Royal Rumble match is always filled with surprise entrants (Diamond Dallas Page, the Boogeyman, and the biggest surprise of the night, the WWE return of Bubba Ray Dudley, who received one of the biggest pops of the night), it’s a showcase of talent to win and headline WrestleMania. It’s one of the most significant honors one can have in their career. The common battle cry of the fans is to have a new, young, fresh face for the WWE. #PushTheYoungTalent. However, when Roman Reigns was crowned the winner of the 2015 Royal Rumble, the sound of boos in the arena was deafening. People were not impressed.

While there is no denying that Roman is talented, there are numerous reasons why the fans were not happy with the outcome. For one thing, it may not have necessarily been Roman’s victory that pushed fans to such extreme dissatisfaction that #CancelWWENetwork trended on Twitter all night. Daniel Bryan was eliminated early. The two of the last three remaining men were Kane and Big Show, two wrestlers that the audience knows will not win because it’d be too obvious with their massive size. Bubba Ray Dudley, the fans not knowing at the time whether his comeback was a one-time deal or the re-start of his time with the WWE, did not stay in the ring that long at all. The thought that Rusev may win by surprise after never officially being eliminated earlier in the night when he returned to the ring and attacked Reigns lasted for only less than a minute.

Add these factors to an audience that did not welcome Reigns with a warm reception when his music hit and he walked down the steps to the ring in the first place all contributed to such negative backlash.

Let’s take a look at Reigns, himself. If the fans were booing even before he entered the ring, there’s a resentment towards him early. What happened to fans wanting the WWE to push young, new and exciting talent? It’s a scenario of “be careful what you wish for”.

Reigns has the size, the presence, and the looks to be the future poster boy of the company. One can see him in mainstream media more likely than someone like, say, a Daniel Bryan based on size and appearance alone. And that’s also the thing. There is criticism that it feels as if the WWE is trying to “make” fans accept and love Reigns. While he’s a likable character, he is still very “green.” In other words, there is a long way to go with him. He needs more work in the ring and more work on the mic. From Shield alum alone, looking at the likes in-ring wise of Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins compared to Reigns is like night and day. While Ambrose and Rollins cut their teeth in the indies over the years, Reigns is much newer to the world of professional wrestling, and it shows. While the fans want the pushing of new talent, the fine print should have mentioned a specific person. Many believe Reigns is not there yet. It’d be better to love and accept him more organically as opposed to because “we have to.” Reasons like that may be why the fans were so upset. When even the massively loved Rock couldn’t help Roman from the boos, it was obvious there was a problem.

In a professional manner, the next night on RAW, the WWE acknowledged the hate towards Roman, who explained how the fans aren’t the ones going in the ring actually fighting these matches. “If” the company is pushing him, he’s taking advantage of the opportunity. He went on to say how life’s not fair and the audience received an air that Roman will give it his all at WrestleMania in the title match against Brock Lesnar. Whether people like him or not, he’s doing his job and what he’s told, and you can’t fault Reigns himself for that.

While I’m personally a fan of Reigns, I still would prefer he had more time to develop more. Maybe WrestleMania will be an excellent opportunity to solidify his status as a top-tier superstar on such a grand scale, granted he remains in the match. Whether you were thrilled or disgusted with the way the Royal Rumble ended, it will be interesting to see how the story line will progress, how Reigns in particular will improve, and how his road to WrestleMania will look now, especially amidst the vocal reaction of the WWE Universe.

The Storm of RAW

With RAW returning to live broadcasts after a surprise Monday hiatus due to weather, it made me think about how the role the “Blizzard of 2015” will play in WWE history. Ever since 1993, Monday Night RAW has entered living rooms all around the world bringing the best in sports entertainment. With over 1100 episodes, RAW is the longest-running episodic weekly television show on the air. For years, a RAW has not been cancelled. That changed the night of Monday, January 26th when RAW was to be taped from the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut but due to the looming effects of the nor’easter Blizzard of 2015, RAW was broadcast live from WWE headquarters in Stamford, CT.

Michael Cole and Booker T discussed the matches from the previous night along with JBL, who had a segment where he was a weatherman on top of the roof of the building. RAW was filled with interviews with Reigns, Lesnar, Rollins and Bryan along with a full replay of both the triple threat match and the Royal Rumble match from the night before.

Anything can happen when it comes to live television, and I tip my hat to the WWE for putting a show together after an emergency cancellation occurred the day of the taping. While people who paid full price to see the Royal Rumble on pay-per-view may have felt their money was wasted if they could see it for free the next day, it further encouraged people to pay just $9.99 for the Network where you get the PPV and all of the other content that comes with the Network. It’s definitely cheaper. In a sense, it was good marketing to get those customers to subscribe to the Network while still filling the 3-hour gap left previously void that night due to the storm. Re-airing the much praised triple threat match may also sway people to stay with the Network, even being dissatisfied with the outcome of the Royal Rumble match. It’s matches like those that can make one proud to be a wrestling fan. That Monday night proved that RAW is very much live, and the world of live television is a business that must always be quick on its feet.

Katy Perry Draws Comparison To Wrestler During Superbowl Halftime Show

Wrestling fans are all abuzz over one of the costumes worn by Katy Perry during this year’s Superbowl Halftime show. At one point during the performance, Perry’s outfit resembled attire similar to that of Bam Bam Bigelow.

A moment for the fans

You know those moments we all live for as fans? Those moments that cause you to either smile from ear to ear or mark out like you’ve never marked out before? Wether it be while watching the Super Bowl, the World Series, the World Cup, the indie 500, WrestleMania, WrestleKindom, Bond for Glory or a UFC event as fans it’s what we live for. We live to cheer and live to boo!

This moment in particular should cause MMA fans and pro wrestling fans alike to rejoice. As you may know it was recently announced that Shayna Baszler will be fighting Amanda Nunes in Rio on March 21st and some of you may also know Shayna is a HUGE wrestling fan. I mean after all she’s a catch wrestler which has adapted into what we know as pro wrestling today. She’s an ongoing supporter and it looks like she’s getting that support in return.

ROH and PWG star Adam Cole sent out a tweet to the queen of spades in support of her upcoming bout

There you have it folks Adam Cole says that the pro wrestling family has Shayna’s back which means as wrestling fans (and if your reading this that means you) SO SHOULD YOU. Even if MMA isn’t your cup of tea I encourage you to tune into this fight on March 21st it’s our duty as a wrestling/MMA community to do so.

More details on start time and how to view the fight are coming soon.

Von Erich’s To Return To TNA

Dixie Carter announced on Twitter that Ross and Marshall Von Erich will be making their returns to TNA at next month’s Impact Wrestling tapings from Universal Studios. Their father, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Von Erich, will also be appearing. Dixie wrote:

Drew McIntyre makes TNA debut

Earlier today I posted a huge spoiler of the hardcore country knockout making her return at Impacts tapings in Glasgow Scotland this evening. However that wasn’t the only treat the UK fans got tonight.

I usually hate posting spoilers but this one is too good NOT to share.

Hometown hero and Scotland Native Drew McIntyre aka Drew Galloway made his IMPACT debut. Drew came out to prevent a beat down on fellow native Grado (from British bootcamp) given by MVP and his crew.

This episode of impact will air February 20th. Drew is a former WWE superstar and IC champ but truthfully Drew never got the proper treatment he so richly deserves. It’ll be interesting to see what IMPACT does for him. There’s not a doubt in my mind that in IMPACT he’ll be able to showcase his true talent and one day become a world champion.

So guys are you excited that “the chosen one” is now a member of the IMPACT roster? Let us know in the comments.

A Moment to Appreciate…The Royal Rumble Numbers

One of the most exciting times of the year is the Royal Rumble. An entry that may quality for a “You Might Be a Wrestling Fan If…” list is that you may get excited when the annual Royal Rumble Stats/Numbers video comes out. The lucky number 27 spot. How the number 1 and number 30 spot are equally lucky. Time records. While there may be no story lines set in stone, the Royal Rumble serves as a fresh start for the new year—a number one contender is crowned for WrestleMania and with the Rumble out of the way, new angles can begin for the other 29 competitors. Not only is it the beginning of the road to WrestleMania, it is also the beginning of the road to exciting new twists and turns in the WWE world for the 2015 calendar year.

Legends Live On

Prior to the Royal Rumble with its surprise returns (that’s for another day), returns made me realize that I could not stop thinking about the RAW Reunion. It was one of those moments when it personally made me proud to be a wrestling fan. From witnessing the greatness of a now rare appearance of the nWo on live TV to a surprise reunion of the APA and even an appearance by Sting, the pop from the crowd proved that bringing legends back to RAW is always a positive decision. Not only is it great to see old “friends” for older wrestling fans, it allows the next generation to say they were able to see the likes of say, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and/or X-Pac live and in an arena. Having the Ascension out with the nWo angle gave them a chance to have exposure in a segment that non-current WWE viewers may see who tune in just to see legends they grew up on. While old fans get their nostalgic fix, the new generation still gets promoted in a win-win situation. Besides, hearing Ric Flair express his praises for Dean Ambrose and Shawn Michaels loving the work of Bray Wyatt will never get old.
