The element of surprise follow up

Last week, I wrote am article discussing the element of surprise when it comes to the world of sports entertainment. While spoilers can be seen as “fun” and wonderful thirst quenchers for when you “just want to know a little bit of a sneak peek”, they can also take away the surprise of what’s to come. One of the biggest surprises came last week when The Rock returned to a booming crowd. No one saw it coming and it drew a stronger bang than if people knew ahead of time. You’ll get a response sounding more like, “That was awesome!! I never imagined he’d show up!” rather than “What’s the big deal, I knew he was coming.”

Then there’s TNA, who filmed episodes weeks in advance and there’s spoilers floating around on the Internet. How did they manage to put on a current, live PPV storyline-wise with Bound for Glory in Japan? Simple. Place emphasis on matches being wrestling based showcasing skills as opposed to storyline driven. It was an excellent way on TNA’s part for dealing with a spoiler driven situation in as positive of a way as possible.

Supporting my previous argument, a world with spoilers can be fine in some elements, but it is best to leave the surprises alone and let them unravel as they may. The Rock’s return alone perfectly exemplifies this point

WWE Network Running Advertisements

WWE-Network-3009089

WWE sent out a message to it’s WWE Network subscribers telling them that they have started to run limited video advertisements.

Here is what you can expect:

No commercial breaks during scheduled programming – Limited advertising between shows – Occasional advertising before video-on-demand content.

Celebrities, Promotion, and the WWE

On this past Monday’s RAW, Todd Chrisley of Chrisley Knows Best fame and NeNe Leakes, famous for her role on The Real Housewives of Atlanta were guests, promoting their shows respectively. With such instances as Leakes getting into a backstage confrontation with WWE Diva Cameron, it’s not uncommon for WWE superstars and divas to get involved with talent personalities.

From Donald Trump to Floyd Mayweather, the WWE serves as an excellent avenue for celebrities to promote their latest TV show, movie, album, book, etc., while (for ones that are fans) being able to fulfill a life long or childhood dream of being on WWE television and perhaps even competing in a WWE ring.

While some fans may argue that celebrities are on there just for promotion, it is hard to argue that none of them are having an enjoyable time. The bigger the WWE fan, such as NFL football players who sit in the front row or TV personality Maria Menudos who has actually gotten in on the action, the more passion and energy the celebrity can display and the more enthusiasm the fans can give back. If the fans can buy into your excitement and relate to your passion, it’s a positive experience.

Whether it’s The Miz guest hosting on TMZ, John Cena being interviewed by Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Springer holding an intervention between the Bella Twins, or Kevin Hart celebrating in the ring with Adam Rose and his Rosebuds, the wrestlers get exposure on mainstream television and the celebrity is either introduced to or finally gets to be involved in the world of sports entertainment.

There has been rumors of WWE Moving SmackDown to Thursday nights on SyFy. Now there is new speculation of WWE making that move when SyFy issued a press release Thursday to announce that their new 12 Monkeys series will debut on Friday, January 16th at 9pm EST. Obviously that is when the second hour of SmackDown begins. Was this a mistake with SyFy’s press release or is WWE finally moving SmackDown from Friday nights?

The Rock’s surprise appearance on RAW & confrontation with Rusev has sparked rumors that he could be competing at WrestleMania 31 next year. TMZ caught up with Rock Wednesday in New York & asked him if he will wrestle at WrestleMania 31.

The Rock said: “I don’t think so (smiling). I might get hit in the mouth.”

In a backstage segment to air this Friday on SmackDown Rock teases a match at WrestleMania.

Spoiling the Wrestling Fun

WrestleMania has been coined as a “global phenomenon”. The biggest pay per view event of the year is the WWE equivalent to the Super Bowl. Other companies strive to find their answer to the wrestling juggernaut’s annual super event. TNA’s Bound for Glory has been the WrestleMania of Impact Wrestling and while TNA is a smaller company, it is always able to serve as an alternative for WWE programming.

While Bound for Glory has historically remained in the United States, on October 12th, BFG is going overseas. Is it to the ever-popular United Kingdom? No. For the first time ever, BFG leaves the states for Tokyo, Japan. For years, Japan has been one of the most popular countries for showcasing pro wrestling talent. With companies such as New Japan Pro Wrestling and Japanese stars in TNA such as Sanada and the inclusion of stars such as The Great Muta and Tajiri, BFG looks to pay homage to the nation that has welcomed and supported pro wrestling with open arms. However, there is another side to the story. With the show airing at 7:30pm eastern, that would be 8:30am Tokyo time, TNA’s flagship pay per view won’t be live but rather on a taped delay for the United States. While it’s great to see TNA’s popularity reaches a global audience, what will be the reaction that Monday morning?

It’s one thing to leave the country, but for the biggest event of the year, especially when other PPVs have transformed into free events on Spike TV, is having a pay per view that’s in another country a smart decision, showcasing other cultures and TNA’s popularity, or will it be infested with complaints of rabid spoilers?

With multiple episodes of TNA being taped weeks in advance, one must be careful looking up any TNA information if they wish to avoid spoilers, especially in the age of social media and the “instant gratification” generation. While some may avoid TNA outside of television altogether to avoid spoilers, millennials help push a show’s popularity with fandoms and social media buzz. If people avoid social media to avoid spoilers, how can something like TNA reach a level of popularity to compete with any competition? Spoilers take away the surprise and joy of seeing something unfold, and with BFG being taped delayed, there’s a higher risk of being spoiled. While it’s best to avoid social media before the event airs, is this a risk of losing a part of the fan base or an alternative to how social media increases for, say, the WWE before a PPV (albeit live) such as WrestleMania?

On the other side of the coin, TNA spoiled their own product by announcing that Bully Ray actually did slam Dixie Carter through a table and it would air the next week. While some were turned off by the spoiler, others heard about the actions and flocked to Spike TV that next week. While some may look at it as an old way of thinking by wanting to avoid spoilers, maybe there’s still a strong desire to avoid spoilers. While both have been seen amongst fans, time will truly tell which way of presenting information and “spoilers” will thrive in the social media age.

With Bound for Glory in Japan, it should be an exhilarating event for the ages. However, will the threat of spoilers hurt buzz about the show, or encourage more to tune in and watch? We’ll have to wait and see.
