Maddox said some people say Bryan is severely unstable & has relationship issues. Cena said are you sure of all of these accusations. Daniel Bryan came to the ring. Fans chanted Yes! Bryan said to Maddox it seems that you think I don’t deserve a shot at the WWE Title but these people disagree with you. Maddox asked Bryan if he thinks he has earned or deserves a shot at the championship at Summer Slam & asked why does he think Cena chose him. Cena interrupted & said you want to know why be man enough & asked John Cena. Cena said Daniel I chose you for this match because this gentleman & the dumb*sses he works for a lot of times are afraid to see God given talent & ability even when it’s beard is staring them right in the face. Cena said to Maddox you wont to run this man down for being half my size & for not being as strong as me. Cena said if size is everything that makes a WWE Champion then here(Cena tossed the WWE Title to Maddox) run to the back & give that to the Great Khali. Cena said he has got names like Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio & the late Eddie Guerrero that prove ability & passion make a WWE Champion not just size & strength. Cena said he chose Bryan because he earned it & deserves it. Cena said being WWE Champion means facing the best competition & sometimes it comes from an unlikely source. Cena said he picked Bryan to compete in the match & just because Bryan was given this opportunity doesn’t mean he is going to hand him the Title. Cena signed the contract & said Bryan is the best competition & he is going to prove at Summer Slam even the best isn’t good enough. Bryan signed the contract & started to talk but Maddox interrupted & announced the match. Bryan yelled at Maddox No! & said you don’t get to interrupt me because I have waited my entire career for this opportunity & I proven that I deserve this. Maddox said not everybody thinks you deserve it. Maddox said he is going to give Bryan an opportunity to prove he deserves it by having a match tonight, he meant matches. Punk said Heyman had one decision to make & he made the wrong one & Punk said he is going to make sure he lives to regret it every single day of his miserable life. Punk said he isn’t going to stop until Lesnar lays in the same broken heap that he left him in last week. Punk said it doesn’t matter what Lesnar or Heyman thinks this is his ring & he owns it & he has proved it against people like John Cena, The Rock, The Undertaker & he would have proven it to Lesnar last week if it wasn’t for Heyman stabbing him in the back for the second time. Punk said there wont be a third time & he will get his hands on Heyman & make him pay. Punk said he isn’t going to pretend Lesnar isn’t the monster that everybody says he is. Punk said monsters where put on this earth & in his path to be slaughtered. Punk said he wants Lesnar at Summer Slam he wants the best vs the beast. The Match That Changed Wrestling – The Montreal Screwjob

With the 15th anniversary of The Montreal Screwjob coming up, and with Bret “The Hitman” Hart scheduled to be on Raw this week, we thought it was necessary to take a look at the match that changed wrestling. Hart is to appear on the live broadcast from of all places, Montreal Quebec, Canada.

Here is the opening of the Wikipedia account of that night:

The Montreal Screwjob was a controversial, purportedly real life professional wrestling event in which the owner of the World Wrestling FederationVince McMahondouble-crossed the defending WWF ChampionBret Hart, during the main event match of the professional wrestling pay-per-view event Survivor Series held on November 9, 1997 at the Molson Centre in Montreal,QuebecCanada. A secret manipulation of the match’s result (known as a “shoot screwjob” in professional wrestling parlance) was devised by McMahon and discussed with Hart’s match opponent, Shawn Michaels. It was decided by McMahon that Shawn Michaels would win the contest, and the WWF title, from Bret Hart no matter what. The plan was executed when the match referee, Earl Hebner, under orders from McMahon, called for the bell to ring and ended the match as Michaels held Hart in the Sharpshooter submission hold (which was Hart’s signature finishing move), even though Hart had not submitted. Michaels was declared the victor by submission and crowned as the new WWF Champion.

So what is the big deal? You would say that all wrestling is scripted – right? Well, let’s take a look at what Bret and others have to say.

So again, why is this so important to post about and why do you say this one match changed wrestling (and btw, I have a hard time saying Sports Entertainment)?

Well, Hart was one of the most respected men in the sport. It was his home country. He couldn’t stand Shawn Michaels. He was leaving for WCW. So many issues and so many opinions.

My partner Trevor is going to help with this story and this will be a good place for him to join the discussion.

Trevor – The fact that this incident is such a huge part of the wrestling industry’s history is due in large part by it’s timing. The truth is if it had not been for a documentary crew following Bret for several months the events of that day would have been just another case of rumors and gossip. The fact that Bret was in the process of filming a documentary titled “Hitman wrestling with shadows” is in my opinion the single most important aspect of the “screwjob”. The documentary film crew caught every behind the scenes moment leading up to the events which occurred and the aftermath.

The documentary paints the picture of a wrestler who is torn between an offer to leave the company which gave him the huge platform of success and WCW who was offering Bret more money to join it’s organization.

The truth is that at that time Vince told Bret he “couldn’t afford” to keep him on and regretted signing a 20 year contract. Bret appears to show a deep loyalty to Vince and it appeared that both individuals were trying to work something out. In the end it was decided that Bret would go ahead and leave the company after his obligation to appear at the 1997 Survivor Series in Montreal.

With Bret leaving Vince McMahon believed that the only right thing to do was for Bret to loose to Shawn Micheal’s after all you couldn’t have someone who was leaving the company have the title right? Bret’s idea was to appear on Raw the following night and forfeit the championship. With his last mach being in his home country of Canada Bret had reservations about loosing in front of friends and family in attendance.

This was the main issue leading up to the “screwjob” after all it appeared that Vince and Bret had already come to to terms with his departure from the company itself. The most conclusive evidence came in the form of what was intended to be a secret one on one meeting. However Bret had a wire (microphone) so the documentary film crew could capture the meeting audio. Behind closed doors Bret finally recommends that neither he or Shawn win the match but that the match would end in a brawl with no clear winner.

Vince can be heard saying “Whatever you want to do is fine with me”. At some point before the match Vince apparently met with the creative team behind the show and the referee and devised the plan to have Shawn win.

Regardless of who was right or wrong the good news is that wounds have heeled between Bret and the WWE. Vince would later admit he regretted the way things turned out. The saying “it’s in the past” applies here for sure. Although the events of that November night will always be the defining event which opened the curtain and showed the world how professional wrestling works. We still watch it!

Here’s a clip from the documentary (1998)

Thank you Trevor!

To finish up and to re-emphasize what Trevor said, those of us who have watched wrestling for years know that the events are scripted. I mean once as a kid Dick the Bruiser and Bobby “The Weasel” Heenan (this was before he was “The Brain”) were scheduled to sign autographs at a local car dealership and imagine my surprise when they drove up in the same convertible. No one “hated” Heenan more that Dick the Bruiser, or so I thought at that time.

Many times we know what is going to happen before they actually take place and yet we still watch with great anticipation. However, Bret thought he knew what was going to happen in Montreal until the “screwjob” took place. I echo what Trevor said about bygones. I’m glad Bret and Vince have put things behind them and who knows, maybe we will see Bret perform his own “screwjob” in Montreal on Raw this week.

Viewpoint: Ed’s Take on #Raw1000

After live blogging for 3 hours and 15 minutes last night and having a blast doing it, how do I start with this post. My favorite moment (several), favorite match (again, more than one), biggest surprise (two huge ones, so I don’t know which to choose), best segment (it would be easy to say the entire show). So where do I go?

How about THANK YOU WWE and your entire staff, AND THANK YOU Mr. McMahon for what you did for us – the fans of the WWE Universe!

Check out how The Boss opened the show. And for everyone who thinks he is arrogant and cocky, this may shock you. How could Vince have been more humble than this:

Trevor has already hit on these two shockers – #Raw1000 Shockers: AJ Named Raw GM (@WWEAJLee) and #Raw1000 Shockers: C.M. Punk Turns Heel, WWE Universe Filled With Shock, Anger (VIDEO) (@CMPUNK) so I want to hit on three parts of the show that I think will go down in my own personal #Raw1000 memory bank.

First, is the DX reunion (PG Version). Of course it was great when HHH and HBK came out, but I really popped loud when HHH said, “Didn’t there used to be more of us”? Out comes The Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, and X-Pac and the band was back together. Check it out here:

Next let me share with you the Legends moment of the night where Lita was Heath Slater’s opponent but after Slater got a little over confident – she brings out the APA, yes Ron Simmons and JBL. That sent Slater headed back up the ramp but then, blearing from the speakers comes the words, “Whhhhhaaattttt A Rush”, that’s right Road Warrior Animal and ALL the Legends that have had a part in the weekly Heath Slater beat downs come down the ramp and throw Slater back into the ring. Aww heck, the video says it way better than I can so I will end this part with ONE word, Ron Simmons style – DAMN!!!!

Ok I do have to add, didn’t Lita look awesome with the Twist of Fate and the Moonsault from the top rope.

Finally, I loved the HHH/Brock Lesnar segment, and it may have been Paul Heyman and Stephanie McMahon who stole the segment, that and HHH clotheslining Lesnar over the top rope and out of the ring.

Ok, I can’t keep it to just three – I’ve got to include the “cold chill” moment of the night – the reunion of the Brothers of Destruction, The Undertaker and Kane.

So many more great moments that you can go see here at WWE’s Official YouTube Destination.

Again, THANK YOU WWE for an awesome night at #Raw1000.

Vince McMahon Publicly Thanks WWE Fans For 1000 Episodes Of Raw In Video Statement

The man behind the curtain, the wizard himself Vince McMahon took some time to thank WWE fans as the 1000th episode of his landmark telecast prepares to celebrate it’s 1000th edition this coming Monday night. In the message Vince says they look forward to another 1000 episodes.
