Details On Cody Rhodes’ First NWA Title Defense

Last night the National Wrestling Alliance announced via Twitter that champion Cody Rhodes will be making his first defense of the NWA heavyweight championship at the Ring of Honor event on September 29th. His opponent will be Willie Mack, best known for his work on Lucha Underground and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.

This announcement comes nearly a week after the NWA announced a title rematch for former champion Nick Aldis, who earned another opportunity at the American Nightmare after defeating Doug Williams in a #1 contenders match at Wrestling MediaCon. Cody won the NWA title from Nick Aldis earlier this month at his self-produced ALL IN event from the Sears Centre in Illinois. Prior to that, Aldis held the belt for an astounding 266 days and at one point defended it 20 times over the course of 60 days, concluding with a victory over Colt Cabana in China.

Aldis will presumably take on the winner of Cody and The Mack.

ROH – NJPW Madison Square Garden Show Is Sold Out (4/6/19)

Tickets for the ROH – NJPW G1 Supercard event at Madison Square Garden went on sale Wednesday for HonorClub members. ROH COO Joe Koff revealed that tickets were already 60% sold out that day.

“We are currently 60% sold with general public for sale on Friday,” said Koff in a statement to POST Wrestling.

A WWE sellout at MSG is usually around 15,000 fans for a live event, which is also what ROH has configured for this event, so they had sold around 9,000 to HonorClub members. The remaining tickets went on sale to the general public at 10am ET earlier today and ROH has already sold out the show for April 6. Tickets originally ranged from $30-$300, and those already on the secondary market are going for $90-$1000.

Until this event, WWE had successfully prevented any other wrestling companies from booking the arena. G1 Supercard will be the first non-WWE wrestling event since the formation of WWE in 1963 as the WWWF. Before that, the NWA Capitol Wrestling Corporation would exclusively run the Garden, however that was still owned by Vince McMahon Sr. (and Joseph “Toots” Mondt) and was the precursor to the WWWF. Before that, you’d have to go to 1957 when Manhattan Wrestling Enterprises stopped running the Garden, which was owned by Mondt.

WCW did hold an event at the Paramount Theater (now called the Hulu Theater) in 1996, which is a 5,000 seat facility located beneath the Madison Square Garden arena, but not at the arena itself. WWE issued a statement last month regarding Madison Square Garden working with ROH, stating, “MSG is, of course, free to work with ROH however they want.”

ROH And NJPW Announce Madison Square Garden Event

ring of honor madison square garden new japan njpw

Madison Square Garden has famously been WWE‘s home territory for decades, but now that’s changing — as ROH and NJPW have announced an event at MSG in 2019.

Ring of Honor’s website states, “ROH and NJPW are proud to announce that on April 6th, 2019, the companies will join forces to present the ultimate wrestling event, “G1 Supercard,” to fans from around the world, LIVE from Madison Square Garden in New York City!”

As you may recall, a Sinclair higher-up revealed the show was in the works last month. ROH COO Joe Koff, however, told PWInsider that the date was pulled after MSG execs spoke with WWE officials.

Koff is quoted in today’s release saying: “This is destined to join a long list of historical wrestling moments and where better to hold it than at Madison Square Garden. I am extremely proud of what we have been able to achieve as a company and am very appreciative of how great our relationship with New Japan Pro-Wrestling has become. However, none of this would be possible without our fans, who are truly the best in the world. Madison Square Garden would not be possible without them and for that I am most grateful.”

Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tetsuya Naitoare already confirmed for the event, with more to be announced as the show nears.

Tickets go on sale August 8 for Honor Club members and August 10 for everyone else.

Taeler Hendrix worked for ROH in 2011 and once again from 2015-2017. Hendrix announced her ROH departure on April 4, 2017, and the 29-year-old has been working elsewhere since.

Hendrix made claims yesterday that she wasn’t pushed in ROH or featured on television after turning down a sexual request from now-ROH Champion Jay Lethal. At this time there is no official word on the situation, but Hendrix wrote on Instagram that her attorneys are in an on-going investigation.

She took to social media today and made these accusations while writing, “Threatening my job, the Mae Young Classic, and my career will not deter me any longer.” You can check out her posts below.

ROH Loses Madison Square Garden Debut Date After MSG Has Talks With WWE

Image result for ROH at MSG

It looks like WWE may be trying to repair any damage done to their relationship with Madison Square Garden in New York City as Ring of Honor has lost the date for their MSG debut in 2019, according to PWInsider. It was believed that ROH may have debuted at MSG during WrestleMania 35 Week in April 2019 but that was never confirmed.

As we’ve noted, MSG officials recently reached out to wrestling promotions about working together after they were not happy over how WWE had been using the Barclays Center in nearby Brooklyn, and how none of the WrestleMania 35 Week events were booked at MSG. ROH COO Joe Koff spoke to PWInsider today and confirmed that they lost the date after MSG had talks with WWE.

“You know, I’m going to tell you Mike because you are asking. I’m not going to discuss beyond this statement because I am not going to litigate this in the press,” Koff told PWInsider’s Mike Johnson. “We had a deal with [Madison Square] Garden and they then told us they were backing out after communications from the WWE. We are not able to get any other dates in any kind of discussion. I’m expecting that our lawyers will be contacting all the parties involved and the best we can hope is that we can find a resolution, so we can bring the kind of energy and excitement that ROH and our partner New Japan to a bigger audience and to bigger arenas and to the fans of New York City. ”

When asked if there was the possibility of ROH having a date on the books at MSG, Koff responded, “There is no date and the discussion is going to end here on that.”

No word yet on if Mexico’s AAA promotion still has MSG dates booked for this fall. WWE will return to MSG on July 15th with a live event, featuring The Undertaker and Ronda Rousey.
