Bandido Pulled From ROH World Title Match At Final Battle

ROH World Champion Bandido has tested positive for COVID-19, and will not be able to compete at the “Final Battle: End of an Era” pay-per-view this weekend.

ROH just announced that Bandido tested positive for COVID-19, and has been pulled from Saturday’s main event title defense against Jonathan Gresham. There is no word on who Gresham will face now, or what they will do with the title.

“Unfortunately, ROH World Champion Bandido returned a positive result on his most recent Covid Testing and will not be present at Final Battle this Saturday, December 11th in Baltimore. Thank you for continuously supporting Ring of Honor through it all and we appreciate your understanding that safety and health of our talents, staff and fans are our top priorities. Stay tuned for match updates regarding Final Battle 2021 as we commemorate the history-making era that is coming to an end,” ROH wrote.

Final Battle is scheduled to be the final ROH pay-per-view as the company prepares to go on a major hiatus until April 2022. The plan is to “re-imagine” the company in hopes of returning with a “fan-focused product” moving forward. Bandido has held the ROH World Title since defeating Rush at Best In The World 2021 this past July.

Bandido competed in Mexico at AAA TripleMania Regia II this past Saturday, in the Fatal 5 Way for the vacant AAA Mega Title. That match was won by new champion El Hijo Del Vikingo, but also also featured Jay Lethal, Bobby Fish and Samuray Del Sol.

The Elite Address Live Crowd After ROH Final Battle (Video)

With the January 1 free agency looming for much of The Elite, many within the group have potentially worked their final match for ROH. The success of “All In” and the rumored All Elite Wrestling promotion that looks to be on the horizon, point towards Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks, and Adam Page possibly heading in a new direction.

In the video above, after last night’s ROH Final Battle PPV finished up at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, the Young Bucks, Rhodes, Page, and Marty Scurll gathered in the ring to address the live crowd. The Young Bucks noted the Hammerstein Ballroom was their favorite place to wrestle and invited Scorpio Sky and Frankie Kazarian in the ring, Christopher Daniels would join later.

“Don’t worry this isn’t going to be some emotional farewell speech, or anything like that.” Matt began. “My brother and I started out in this company over ten years ago, can you believe that? This past two-year run has been the greatest time of my life.”

Matt would then give props to Cary Silkn, ROH COO Joe Koff, and ROH GM Greg Gilleland for their support over the years. He gave a shout out to the other wrestlers in the back, his wife, and the fans.

“We’re all ‘elite,’ right? The timer is ticking,” Matt continued. “Something is about to go down, I don’t know what. I hope you watch our YouTube series, Being the Elite. I’ll tell you this, New York City, we will be back and we’ll see you then!”

The group then linked arms and did a quick pose for the crowd before heading to the back. Matt’s tease of returning was kept pretty vague, whether that means they show up at the ROH / NJPW G1 Supercard on April 6 or something completely different, we may have to wait until that timer gets to zero on Being the Elite.

ROH Final Battle Will Now Be Four Hours, New Start Time Announced

ring of honor final battle new start time

Ring of Honor has announced Final Battle will start an hour earlier than usual this Friday on pay-per-view and that the show will now be four hours long, an hour longer than its previous PPVs. Typically, ROH PPVs have started at 9 pm ET, but Final Battle will begin at 8 pm ET and run until midnight.

ROH issued the following:

Ring of Honor’s seminal event, Final Battle, emanates from Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom this Friday, Dec. 14. Final Battle is ROH’s biggest card of the year and has been the site of some of ROH’s most memorable matches.

All roads lead to the G1 Supercard, co-promoted by ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, at sold-out Madison Square Garden on April 6, 2019, and the results at Final Battle undoubtedly will have an impact on the historic show.

This year’s Final Battle is bigger than ever, as ROH officials have just announced that it will be a four-hour show! Just signed to open Final Battle is a first-time matchup pitting former ROH World Television and World Tag Team champion Kenny King against rising star Eli Isom in what is undoubtedly the biggest match of Isom’s career.

KENNY KING vs. ELI ISOM

Although King and Isom have never wrestled each other, they have been in the ring together twice — as partners. Back in June, the makeshift team of King, Isom and Chuckie T surprised everyone by beating SCU in a gauntlet match to earn a shot at ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Kingdom. The biggest surprise was that the rookie Isom pinned Christopher Daniels to win the match. The eclectic trio nearly pulled off another upset against The Kingdom before ultimately falling short.

Not long after that bout, King began to undergo a change of attitude and take shortcuts in his matches. It paid off for him, as he amassed an impressive winning streak, scoring victories over the likes of “Hangman” Adam Page, Marty Scurll, Christopher Daniels and Jushin “Thunder” Liger. The string of wins earned King a shot at ROH World Champion Jay Lethal last month, and he nearly won the title.

Victories in singles matches have been harder to come by for Isom, but he made a good account of himself against larger, more experienced foes such as ROH World Television Champion Jeff Cobb and Shane Taylor.  A win over an established star such as King on the biggest show of the year certainly would send a message that Isom has arrived.

Will Isom shock the wrestling world? Or will the cunning King make an example of the youngster?
