AEW & Jon Moxley Hit With Lawsuit By Former Crew Member Over Alleged Backstage Incident During 2023 Dynamite Tapings

All Elite Wrestling and current AEW World Champion Jon Moxley are at the center of a new legal storm, as a former production crew member has filed a lawsuit accusing both parties of negligence and civil assault. The suit stems from an incident that allegedly took place during the May 10, 2023 episode of AEW Dynamite at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena.

According to court documents obtained by The Takedown, the plaintiff, Christopher Dispensa—a longtime veteran of wrestling and entertainment production—was working that night as a contracted crew member. His role, as stated in the lawsuit, was to hand Moxley a screwdriver during a match against Kenny Omega, part of an ongoing storyline between The Elite and Blackpool Combat Club.

However, Dispensa claims that what was supposed to be a scripted handoff turned violent without warning. The lawsuit alleges that Moxley “violently shoved” him to the ground, resulting in serious injuries that required surgery and continued medical treatment. The alleged moment did not air as a focal point during the broadcast, but it reportedly took place ringside amid the chaos of the bout.

The suit further claims that AEW bears responsibility due to what Dispensa describes as negligent hiring practices, stating the company failed to properly train, monitor, or discipline talent to ensure a safe working environment for non-wrestling personnel. Moxley’s alleged history of “unpredictability” and “lack of control” is also cited as a contributing factor, with Dispensa accusing the former AEW World Champion of acting with “clear intent to harm” or showing “complete disregard” for safety protocols.

Dispensa is pursuing damages related to medical costs, lasting physical injury, emotional trauma, and punitive compensation for the distress caused.

This legal development arrives at a time when AEW is already navigating multiple legal battles. The promotion recently succeeded in moving lawsuits filed by ex-commentator Kevin Kelly and tag team The Tate Twins to arbitration, while former AEW talent Ryan Nemeth dropped his lawsuit voluntarily in April.

As of now, neither AEW nor Jon Moxley has publicly commented on the allegations.

Jon Moxley Returns To AEW Dynamite With A Cryptic Message, Aligns With Marina Shafir

Jon Moxley has returned to AEW television.

In the opening segment of week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, The Blackpool Combat Club member came out to cut a promo where he teased a feud with Darby Allin.

Moxley wound up cryptically telling Tony Schiavone that it will take time for people to wrap their heads around this but it is “not your company anymore.” It’s worth noting that Shane McMahon was trending #1 on Twitter following that line.

Later in a backstage segment, it appears Moxley aligned himself with Marina Shafir.

Moxley was backstage when Marina attacked a handful of stage hands as Moxley asked, “You know what we need around here?”

After Marina disposed of various people, Moxley answered his own question with “humility.”

Jon Moxley Wins IWGP World Heavyweight Title with Historic Victory at NJPW Windy City Riot, Event Results

AEW’s Jon Moxley has added another massive accomplishment to his legendary career by becoming the new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.

In the main event of NJPW Windy City Riot, Moxley dethroned Tetsuya Naito for the gold. Naito had held the title since Wrestle Kingdom 18 in January 2024, where he had dethroned Sanada.

Not only did Moxley win the gold, but he has also made history in the process. With this victory, the AEW star has become the first person to win the richest prize in New Japan, All Elite Wrestling, and WWE.

After the match, Jon Moxley said he would not be decking any challengers and specifically singled out the Young Lions. He did, however, want to issue his first challenge and name his first title defense but fate had other plans.

Jon Moxley would call out Shota Umino, his personal young boy, and offer him his final exam in a match for the championship. Before Umino could answer the challenge, Ren Narita laid out MOX with a reinforced push-up bar.

Shota would eventually come out to save MOX and they both agreed that they would have a match for the championship once MOX exacted revenge on Narita. MOX promised Narita that he was a dead man walking.

No official date for Jon Moxley’s first championship defense has been set.

Moxley had two important allies by his side for his latest World Championship victory, most importantly his wife Renee Paquette.

AEW President Tony Khan was also spotted at the event and congratulated Mox on winning New Japan’s top prize in the same building where he first won the AEW World Championship.

Injury Updates On Adam Cole & Jon Moxley After AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam

Adam Cole and Jon Moxley are both believed to have suffered injuries on Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam.

Fightful Select is reporting that Cole was admitted to the hospital following the show and was last seen using crutches. He is said to have injured his ankle when jumping off the ramp during the main event of Dynamite.

Moxley, who is believed to have suffered a mild concussion, was deemed “okay” after his match.

Moxley was checked on by AEW President Tony Khan and others after leaving under his own accord.

The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Moxley wasn’t hurt during the finish of his AEW International Title defense against Rey Fenix, but actually in the opening minutes of the match.

AEW had originally planned for Moxley to retain the International Title, which Fenix eventually won.

As the match progressed, Moxley realized he wasn’t feeling well and informed Fenix mid-match that he was going to triumph.

While the former AEW World Champion had asked the referee to count him out, it didn’t immediately happen after the piledriver.

Moxley was reportedly doing better later in the night and was said to have been “fine” backstage.

Jon Moxley Believed To Have Suffered Concussion On AEW Dynamite Grand Slam

During the “AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam” special, Jon Moxley lost the AEW International Championship to Rey Fenix, though that’s not what caught the attention of the fans. After Fenix hit his Black Fire Driver, Moxley did not kick out of the move. It appeared something was wrong as referee Rick Knox only counted to two even though Moxley’s shoulders were still on the mat. Fenix quickly hit the move again, and this time around, Knox counted to three and Fenix won the title.

According to “PWInsider,” the reason behind the awkward finish was Moxley reportedly suffering a concussion. After being checked over by doctors for some time, Moxley walked out of the arena by himself. It’s also believed that Fenix winning the title was not the original plan and only happened because of Moxley’s injury.

On social media, both Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp and Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez provided updates on the situation. Sapp noted that those he spoke with were “optimistic” that Moxley was fine, and that right after the incident AEW CEO Tony Khan and the other members of the Blackpool Combat Club went to check on him. Alvarez acknowledged that Moxley was hurt during the match, but said that “he is okay.”

Jon Moxley became the AEW International Champion on September 3 after he defeated Orange Cassidy at All Out in Chicago. He defended the title thrice before losing it to Fenix, with his previous defense coming against Big Bill on the September 13 episode of “Dynamite.”

Details On Jon Moxley’s New AEW Contract

It was recently announced that three-time and current AEW World Champion Jon Moxley would remain All Elite for quite a while, as the news broke yesterday that Moxley has signed a five-year extension with AEW. It also was revealed that Moxley would not only be used as a wrestler, but also as “a coach and mentor.” Now more details on Moxley’s new deal have surfaced.

According to Fightful, several sources told them that Moxley was actually working without a contract for some time. While unclear exactly how long it was, it was noted that throughout the summer Moxley’s contract was “quite a situation” and that AEW owner Tony Khan would do whatever it took to keep Moxley in the company for the rest of his career. What’s interesting is that Moxley won both the AEW World Championship and Interim World Championship during the summer without being under contract.

Fightful also revealed that Moxley is exclusive to AEW and its international partners, including NJPW, where Moxley is a former United States Heavyweight Champion. It is uncertain if Moxley will be able to continue working for companies such as GCW and REVOLVER, as AEW didn’t comment on the matter. GCW officials said today that they didn’t know about the press release regarding Moxley’s contract until it was made public. Moxley is still slated to put his GCW World Championship on the line against Nick Gage in a Title vs, Career Match later tonight.

Regarding the backstage role as a coach and mentor, Fightful said that Moxley-led talent meetings backstage are very well-received. One of these meetings notably happened after the All Out pay-per-view last month despite other events that transpired. The decision to move Moxley into the role stemmed from the weight his words carry, according to Fightful.

Backstage News On How AEW Dynamite World Title Match Came About

It’s now been two days since Jon Moxley defeated CM Punk to become Undisputed AEW World Champion in one of the more dominating World Championship matches in recent memory, and as the shock wears off, fans are wondering just how this whole thing came together and what’s happening next. Luckily a new report is here to confirm some details and provide an update on what fans can expect. In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer seemed to confirm that another Punk-Moxley match will be happening soon, while also backing up previous reports that revealed a Moxley-Punk TV match wasn’t originally in the cards.

“A rematch between the two will headline All Out on September 4 in Chicago,” Meltzer said. “The announcers gave Punk a backstory of perhaps coming back too soon. He limped out of the ring, and no doubt the story of the Chicago match is that he goes in injured. This was not the original plan as far as doing the television match and this type of match.

“It wasn’t a ratings ploy, although the timing was such that they definitely wanted to boost ratings, as much as Moxley becoming the real champion as he personally hated the interim thing, and it being a way to tell a different story. Some didn’t like the short match. Others did. Some felt it would hurt doing a PPV rematch just 11 days later, and others felt the nature of how the match was done, being kept short and having an injury, puts more doubt and helps the PPV. Anyway, that answer to at least an extent will be determined shortly after the show.” It’s unknown when the Punk-Moxley rematch will be announced. Exclusive backstage footage of Punk following his loss is scheduled to be shown tonight on “AEW Rampage.”

Jon Moxley Handily Defeats CM Punk To Become Unified AEW Champion, Update On All Out Main Event

CM Punk returned to AEW two weeks ago after a spell on the sidelines, seemingly setting up a showdown to crown the one true champion at All Out. That wasn’t the plan as was revealed shortly after. Punk and Interim Champion Jon Moxley’s unification match was announced for Dynamite instead. Wednesday’s Dynamite, and now AEW once again has just one World Champion.

That man is Moxley, and the surprises kept on coming before and after the match. The first surprise was that not only was AEW not saving what was arguably one of the biggest matches in its short history for a PPV, but it didn’t even save it for Dynamite’s main event. Moxley’s music hit midway through the show, indicating the match was about to begin at the halfway point.

Both Punk and Moxley proudly held their respective titles aloft as the announcers promised multiple times that AEW would stick with the action for as long as it takes. A sign to some that the match might go the full second hour and other scheduled bouts would need to be pushed. It was the exact opposite of that. Moxley beat Punk shockingly quickly, solidifying himself as AEW’s one true champion.

CM Punk appeared to re-injure his leg in the closing stages of the very short match.

Punk hit Moxley in the side of the head with a well-placed roundhouse kick during the early goings, and even though it sent Mox to the mat, Punk also went down like a shot too. As soon as Punk landed, he clutched his standing leg, the same one he injured. That opened the door for Moxley to take the advantage, dominating Punk from there on in which wasn’t long at all.

Mox took his title and celebrated in the crowd as Punk was helped to the back. What remains unclear hours after the match is whether Punk’s injury was legitimate or not. This whole situation has been entirely unpredictable and a little bit bizarre from the moment Punk returned.

Despite Jon Moxley winning the AEW World Championship unification match in dominant fashion on “AEW Dynamite” this week, the planned main event for the upcoming All Out PPV has supposedly remained unchanged. According to Dave Meltzer on the latest “Wrestling Observer Radio,” the match slated to headline the show next Sunday is still Moxley vs. CM Punk for the AEW World Championship, though it’s unknown if any stipulations will be getting added.

It had been reported before the unification match happened that the two men would meet for the unified title at All Out, which many fans expected to be their first collision in AEW, but after the way their encounter was booked on “AEW Dynamite,” doubts began to creep in. While some sort of outside angle or controversial finish was widely expected to setup a rematch at the PPV, that was not the case, as Moxley picked up the victory clean. Punk connected with a kick at the start of the match, then began selling a foot injury — the reason he’s been off television for several months, and the reason Moxley became Interim Champion in the first place.

From there, Moxley focused on the foot and secured a quick, clean win in just over three minutes, to the surprise of everyone watching. Punk was helped to the back by doctors, while Moxley cut a passionate promo about how it’s his time, but no official announcement or angle was done to set up a potential rematch. With the PPV taking place on Sunday, September 4, that leaves just one more episode of “AEW Dynamite,” as well as two episodes of “AEW Rampage,” for Tony Khan to get the match booked if it is, in fact, still taking place.

Jon Moxley vs CM Punk AEW Championship Unification Match Set For Next Week’s Dynamite

Next Wednesday, AEW Champion CM Punk will face off against the interim champion Jon Moxley to determine who will become the true AEW World Champion.

AEW fans are in for a PPV calibre match-up on next week’s episode of Dynamite. The AEW World Champion, CM Punk, is set to take on the Interim AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley, and determine who will continue on as AEW’s true champion.

Last night’s episode of Dynamite saw the two men confront each other in the ring. The two had harsh words for each other; Punk called Moxley a second-rate wrestler, while Moxley effectively said that Punk is only in AEW because he “ran out of money.”

CM Punk became AEW World Champion this past May at Double or Nothing after defeating Hangman Adam Page. Just a few days later, however, CM Punk broke his foot during a trios match with FTR. He consequently had to announce his injury the following week and stepped away from the ring, much to the dismay of the AEW faithful.

Soon after Punk’s announcement, AEW began the process of crowning an interim champion. Jon Moxley first won a battle royale and then defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi at NJPW x AEW Forbidden Door to claim the title. He’s since defended the belt against several contenders, including Brody King, Rush, and Chris Jericho.

CM Punk made his return to AEW at Quake by the Lake, and he’s come back with a vengeance.

Many fans expected this bout to happen at All Out; it not only has incredibly high stakes, but will be between two of the biggest stars of this generation. For whatever reason, though, AEW has decided to give it to fans a few weeks earlier than anticipated.

Next week’s episode of Dynamite will take place in Ohio, so Moxley has a bit of a hometown advantage. However, it’s truly any man’s game heading into next week. Will CM Punk get the title reign he earned for himself in May? Or will Moxley continue to set the wrestling world on fire with the true AEW World Championship around his waist?

CM Punk Makes Shocking Return From Injury To End Wednesday’s Dynamite

CM Punk made a surprise return to AEW TV on Wednesday night, showing up to shut Dynamite down following a bloody AEW World Championship match between interim champ Jon Moxley and challenger Chris Jericho.

Moxley retained the championship, surviving quite the beating from Jericho and even kicking out after receiving a Judas Effect. The champion had been bloodied early in the match, with Jericho ripping an earring from his ear.

He was also put through the Lion Tamer – more than once at that – but Jericho would be the one to tap out even after sending Moxley face first into an exposed turnbuckle and slugging him with a baseball bat thrown into the ring by Sammy Guevara (he overthrew it actually).

Moxley was then attacked by the Jericho Appreciation Society before the Blackpool Combat Club came to his aid. Jericho’s entourage got the upper hand and the inaugural AEW World Champion was about to smash Mox in the face with his own belt, but CM Punk’s music hit, prompting a pause.

Punk cleared the JAS out of the ring and then faced down Moxley, who showed little appreciation for the save, flipping the champ the bird and cursing him out before making his exit.

It appears Punk is ready and raring to go following surgery on his foot – he made sure to hop around on it, showing he could put weight on the surgically repaired appendage before the show went off the air.
