Update On The Future Of Wrestling Drama Heels Following Cancelation On Starz

Mere days after the Season 2 finale of “Heels” aired on Starz, the streaming platform opted to cancel the show and not renew it for a third season. This also came after a major season finale cliffhanger.

In light of the Hollywood writers’ strike coming to an end, “Heels” showrunner Mike O’Malley spoke to Entertainment Weekly and revealed that they are now shopping the series around to other outlets.

“Yeah, we are actively doing it right now,” O’Malley said. “And some of the actors are still under contract. Obviously, the [writers’] strike just ended. I couldn’t have any conversations about this [until now], and granted, they just told me on Friday. But not only are we trying to [find a new network], I really believe the Starz executives when they say they want to see a future for the show too, because they did invest a lot in the show… I really do think it’s going to have a life someplace else.”

O’Malley noted that the Season 2 finale cliffhanger was certainly not intended to be the last episode of the series that stars Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig as the Spade brothers. Fans may recall that Amell has dabbled in a few pro wrestling matches outside of “Heels.” He made his WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam 2015 and also competed at All In 2018.

“Heels” Season 2 notably featured appearances from CM Punk and AJ Lee. Punk’s Ricky Rabies character has recurred in both seasons, while Lee portrayed Elle Dorado in the latest batch of episodes that streamed this summer.

Heels Canceled By Starz

“Heels,” the pro wrestling TV show starring actor Stephen Amell, has reportedly been canceled.

As per “The Wrap,” the show has been canceled due to not having enough audience for it to be renewed for a third season. “Heels” has aired 16 episodes in its two seasons, with the second and final season ending earlier this month.

The cancelation of “Heels” may come as a surprise to many as it seemed to have garnered a good response from critics as well as the audience. As of writing, the show has a high 93% rating by critics and fans on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDB has given it an 8 out of 10 rating.

Amell, who portrays Jack Spade, is the main protagonist of the show, taking over the Duffy Wrestling League promotion after his father’s passing, while his younger brother Ace Spade, played by Alexander Ludwig, finds his footing in the world of pro wrestling. The show also featured CM Punk as Ricky Rabies, and his appearance on the show may have played a part in his return to pro wrestling with AEW. AJ Mendez (formerly known as AJ Lee in WWE), former WWE wrestler and Punk’s wife, also appeared in three episodes in the second season of “Heels.”

First Look Photos Of Upcoming Stephen Amell Wrestling Drama Released

TV network Starz has released some cool photos from ‘Heels’ — the upcoming Stephen Amell-led drama set in the world of independent wrestling.

Starz unveiled the images on social media on Tuesday.

The photos feature Amell and his co-star Alexander Ludwig full wrestling attire. Amell’s character is also wearing a championship belt around his waist.

According to Entertainment Weekly, ‘Heels’ is about a family-owned wrestling promotion in Georgia. Amell plays a character called Jack Spade, and Ludwig plays his brother/rival Ace.

“The premiere date for [Heels] is locked,” Amell tweeted a few days ago. “[Alexander Ludwig’s] hair is majestic. There’s good stuff on the way!!”

The 8-episode drama series is set to premiere in the summer.

This obviously wouldn’t be Stephen’s first brush with wrestling. He’s made appearances in WWE, wrestled against Christopher Daniels at All In and has a close relationship with Cody Rhodes — who he invited to join him on the new TV show when it was first announced back in 2019.

Will one of AEW’s Executive Vice Presidents be making an appearance on the show in the future?
