Brock Lesnar Vs. Daniel Cormier UFC Fight Not Happening?

It looks like the UFC fight between WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar and UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier might not happen.

The fight was expected for early 2019 but UFC President Dana White told TMZ that he’s not sure if the fight will happen.

White wants Cormier to fight Jon Jones, although Cormier’s camp wants him to retire.

“I’d obviously like to see Jones and Cormier fight again at heavyweight,” White said. “Cormier’s team wants him to retire now. They want him to retire right now. I hope we can get 3 more fights out of him.”

Cormier has noted in media interviews that he wants to retire on his 40th birthday, which would be March 20.

It will be interesting to see if Cormier ends up with WWE if he retires from MMA. Cormier had a WWE commentary tryout planned recently, but he had to postpone it when his UFC 230 fight was booked.

“[WWE] called me. They reached out to my assistant. It was WWE, not Fox. They called me about going to Orlando, Florida,” Cormier told Busted Open Radio earlier this month. “I had a tentative date, but then I couldn’t make that date. Afterward, they asked me to go back but they were on tour or something for a month, and I was like, I want to do it with the entire commentary team. I don’t want to do it with one guy here and one guy there because I wanted to see who I can mesh with, and they were like, okay let’s schedule it in November.

“But then I took this [UFC 230] fight and then it got pushed back again. We will revisit this. I am going to Orlando to the Performance Center to do my gig to see how it works out. I am very passionate about pro wrestling. I have watched it my whole life. You can YouTube my reaction to when Seth Rollins won the World Championship at WrestleMania 31. I am very passionate. It is what I like to do. Since I was a kid I liked watching wrestling and is a dream to be able to do something with them in the future.”

Dana White ‘Definitely’ Making Brock Lesnar Vs. Daniel Cormier, Video Of Confrontation At UFC 226

The UFC is going full-steam ahead with plans of putting Brock Lesnar and Daniel Cormier together inside the Octagon. After Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic Saturday night at UFC 226 to become the heavyweight champion, he called out Lesnar, the reigning WWE Universal champion. Lesnar had sat Octagon-side as “DC” knocked out Miocic.

The two became involved in a brief shoving match before officials separated them. Lesnar, according to White, will need six months of clean testing in the USADA pool to become eligible to fight, meaning the bout is likely for early 2019.

“We’re definitely going to make that fight,” White said. “He’s going to pop up (in the USADA testing) here Monday or Tuesday.”

Cormier, who is also the current UFC light heavyweight champion, mentioned during his post-fight press conference a desire to fight again this year before concluding his career in 2019. That could mean a title defense of his 205-pound belt before facing Lesnar for the heavyweight championship.

“I fight Brock Lesnar, I get paid,” said Cormier, who added he is only interested in big fights to finish his career.

UFC Strips Jon Jones Of Title, Reinstates Daniel Cormier As Light Heavyweight Champion

The UFC reinstated Daniel Cormier as its light heavyweight champion Wednesday night, in the wake of Jon Jones’ failed drug test prior to UFC 214 in July.

The announcement was made shortly after the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) officially changed the result of Jones’ third-round TKO victory over Cormier on July 29 to a no-contest.

In an appearance on UFC Tonight, Cormier (19-1) suggested he didn’t want the title back at first, but ultimately was going to fight for the belt either way and accepted reinstatement for financial reasons.

“I talked to [CSAC] and was like, ‘I lost. I lost the fight,'” Cormier said. “As a competitor, that’s how I felt. [UFC president] Dana White called me today and said, ‘If it’s a no-contest, then the fight didn’t happen.’

“Now, people will say stuff like, ‘You got handed the belt.’ He cheated. The reality is, for me to say, ‘I don’t want this title,’ when I was going to be [fighting] in a championship anyway, financially it’s just a big difference if I don’t fight as the champion as opposed to fighting for a vacant title.”

Jones (22-1) tested positive for metabolites of Turinabol, an anabolic steroid. He has denied knowingly taking any banned substances.

CSAC waited to change the result of the July 29 title fight until results of Jones’ “B” sample confirmed the failed drug test. The commission received those results Tuesday.

This is the second failed drug test of Jones’ career. He served a one-year suspension after testing positive for two anti-estrogenic substances in July 2016. Jones stated those substances were the result of a contaminated sexual enhancement pill.

Widely considered the greatest fighter of all time, Jones is facing a maximum four-year suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for his second failed test. He has the right to appeal any suspension.

“He has to fight this. This is a death sentence,” Cormier said. “If this does what it says it can be, it’s a death sentence.”

The UFC has not yet announced a date for Cormier’s next title defense.

Information from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was used in this report.

Daniel Cormier On Jon Jones Failing Drug Test

Daniel Cormier issued the following statement to MMAFighting.com following the news of Jon Jones failing a post UFC 214 USADA drug test:

“It’s hard to find words to describe how I’m feeling right now,” Cormier said. “I’m disappointed to hear the news. It’s very emotional.”We as athletes are entitled to due process, and I will refrain from saying much more until I know exactly what happened.

“In my mind, on July 29, I competed and I lost. I thought Jon Jones was the better man that day. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t believe we are going through all of this again. We will see what happens next.

“Thank you to all my fans who have supported me during this dark time. I love you all very much.”

Anderson Silva replaces Jon Jones for UFC 200 bout against Daniel Cormier – DC issues statement On Silva

Source: TheGuardian.com

The UFC was able to salvage its signature event on Saturday by matching Daniel Cormier with the former middleweight champion Anderson Silva on Thursday evening. Silva replaces Jon Jones, whose light heavyweight fight with Cormier was suppose to headline UFC 200 until Jones was pulled from the card because of a failed drug test suspected to be for a performance-enhancing substance.

The fight will be three rounds and is not a title bout.

Silva gives the card a legitimate bout despite the face he is 41. In fact, a Silva-Cormier fight might actually be more interesting than Jones-Cormier. Jones looked sluggish in his return to the octagon this spring after a year’s absence due to a 2015 suspension following a hit-and-run incident. Silva lost a non-title fight to Michael Bisping in February in London and a 2015 victory over Nick Diaz was wiped out following a positive PED test.

Silva has always fought well when he has moved up to light heavyweight, but he is older now and has not been training for this bout. His last heavyweight victory was against Stephan Bonnar in a 2012 first-round knockout.

Earlier on Thursday, Jones tearfully apologized for his positive test in a press conference and said he did not knowingly take a banned substance. One of the card’s other top names, Brock Lesnar, called Jones’s positive test “unprofessional”. Nick Diaz’s brother Nate, when asked about the Jones suspension, said: “Everybody is on steroids.” Jones denies any wrongdoing.

Jones-Cormier was supposed to be the top fight of UFC 200, a continuation of their 2015 bout that Jones won in a unanimous decision. The two fighters have sniped at each other publicly. Silva-Cormier will not bring the same kind of rage, especially given the way Silva is saving the card by agreeing to fight.

Silva has not trained seriously for a fight in the two months since he had his gallbladder removed in the spring, which raises some concerns about the kind of fight he will have with Cormier and whether he should be fighting at all.

Miesha Tate v Amanda Nunes has now been promoted to the main event slot, while Lesnar is making his heavyweight comeback against Mark Hunt.

Cormier comments on facing Silva at UFC 200:

“I am honored to share the Octagon with the one of the greatest fighters of all time,” Cormier said in an exclusive statement to MMA Fighting. “This is a very tough fight for me, and I have to fight smart and to do my best in order to win this fight. Thank you Anderson for stepping up, and thanks to Dana White and the UFC for making this happen. Now let’s go do this.”

Breaking News: Jon Jones Out Of UFC 200

It what is being called the biggest card in the UFC to date, it seems that it’s taken a major hit.

The anticipated rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title is now off due to the USADA flagging him for a possible dopping violation.

The UFC has issued this statement on the situation.

The UFC organization was notified tonight that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Jon Jones of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collection on June 16, 2016.
USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full fair legal review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.
However, because Jones was scheduled to compete against Daniel Cormier this coming Saturday, July 9 in Las Vegas, there is insufficient time for a full review before the scheduled bout and therefore the fight has been removed from the fight card. As a result, the three-round heavyweight bout between Brock Lesnar and Mark Hunt will become the UFC 200 main event.
Consistent with all previous potential anti-doping violations, additional information or UFC statements will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.
Ticket refunds available upon request at primary point of purchase.
