WWE Network Free Tier Quietly Launches, Update On Plans

A version of the free tier of the WWE Network quietly launched yesterday morning.

The homepage for non-subscribers can be seen at watch.WWE.com now, as long as you’re not logged into an active subscriber account.

The free tier homepage currently features several carousels with content in them, some locked: Trending Now, Recently Added, Every PPV Ever, WWE NXT Highlights, Recent WWE Highlights, WWE Top 10, This Is NXT, Recent In-Ring Programming, WWE Network Essentials, TLC, Featured Series, Watch Full Matches, WWE’s Horsewomen, WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, WWE Network Pick of the Week.

There’s also a box above the carousels to plug what’s currently showing on the WWE Network live feed.

The “Recently Added” carousel features a lot of videos from WWE’s YouTube channel but PWInsider reports that this will change over time.

This is a “very early, unannounced rollout” of the free tier, according to PWI. This version was designed to beta test the free tier and find any potential issues before they officially launch it. The official launch could come some time in the next week. There have been plans to launch the full tiered version of the WWE Network, including a $14.99 version that would include non-WWE indie wrestling content, some time in January 2020, but there’s no word yet on if that is still the timeframe.

Natalya Says Jason Momoa Wants Her To Star In “The Wrestler 2”

It sounds like the sequel to The Wrestler is in the works.

As seen below in the WWE Total Divas bonus clip from this week’s episode, Natalya revealed to the other cast members that actor Jason Momoa wants her to appear in an upcoming movie, The Wrestler 2.

Natalya noted that Momoa wants her to play his former lover in the movie. Momoa will presumably play the lead role of the featured pro wrestler, but none of this has been officially announced. Natalya also said Momoa wants her to wrestle a match in the movie, and she was asked which other wrestler she thinks she would do well with in the ring.

“Once I found out who Jason Momoa is, I’m like, ‘this is pretty cool.’ He’s a really big star. He’s an actor who has been on Game of Thrones, he was in that movie Aquaman. So, the fact that he is now interested in having me in the movie is huge,” Natalya told the Total Divas cameras.

The Wrestler 2 would be the sequel to the popular 2008 drama that starred Mickey Rourke as Randy “The Ram” Robinson. The movie was directed & produced by Darren Aronofsky, and also starred Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood. The film told the story of an aging Robinson, who continued to wrestle on the indies after mainstream success in the 1980s, while trying to find romance and repair his relationship with his daughter. The movie won several awards and made almost $50 million at the box office with a $6 million budget, according to film sites. Several wrestlers appeared in the movie and one of the matches with The Ram vs. Ernest “The Cat” Miller’s character took place at an ROH event, in an ROH ring. Wrestling stars who appeared in different scenes or as background extras in the movie included Miller, WWE 24/7 Champion R-Truth, WWE announcer Nigel McGuinness, WWE NXT Superstar Robert Stone (Robbie E), Romeo Roselli, DJ Hyde, John Zandig, Necro Butcher, The Blue Meanie, Jay Lethal, Jim Powers, and several others. WWE Hall of Famer Afa Anoa’i and some of his trainers worked with Rourke to get him ready for the role.

The movie led to WWE promoting the film through a storyline that saw Chris Jericho go against several WWE Hall of Famers and Legends. After appearing at the 2009 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, Rourke appeared at WrestleMania 25 for an angle that saw Jericho attack Ric Flair after his Handicap Match win over Ricky Steamboat, Jimmy Snuka and Roddy Piper. Jericho then challenged Rourke, and the angle ended with Rourke entering the ring to drop Jericho with a punch.

There’s been no other word on The Wrestler 2 being produced.

XFL Reveals Uniform And Helmet Designs For All Eight Teams

With only a few months until the relaunch of the XFL, it was time to find out what the players drafted would be wearing on the field. The XFL revealed the uniforms and helmet designs for all eight teams for the upcoming season.

The inspirations behind each team design were discussed by the XFL:

Guardians: This is the grey of concrete and steel, and sentries carved in stone; watchdogs over the metropolis. This is the red of fiery eyes and ferocious teeth, and the burning ambition of everyday heroes. This is the black of shielded streets standing guard, and a city that never sleeps.

Seattle Dragons: Emerging from the turbulent seas of the Puget Sound comes a team fashioned to inspire fear. Born beneath the murky skies, they are devils in deep blue, shrouded in the dark indigo mists of some ancient abyss. Their wings are covered in scales of green, like an emerald monster. Their flame-licked tails are the incandescent orange of a fire-breathing beast.

DC Defenders: Inspired by a tradition of service and sacrifice, this team stands tall on the shoulders of giants. Blazoned with the red of the DC flag and our Founding Fathers’ coat of arms: marching ever forward, a force united, with fiery resolve.

Houston Roughnecks: Forged from the fires of the oil fields comes a team that labors deep in the trenches. Resolute and rippling with heat, they toil in a red as fiery as a flaming flare stack. Theirs is the metallic chrome of power plants and pipelines, manufacturing and machinery, of mercenaries in the muck. It’s a blue so dark and deep, it shimmers and shines like Texas crude in the midday sun. These are the scratching, grinding, never-bending few.

Los Angeles Wildcats: This is a team made in LA, let loose from the canyons into the land of bright lights. This beast is unleashed far from the flash and fame, prowling the southland’s back alleys in search of its prey. Its coat is as black as the dead of night, with orange-hued highlights like the golden glow of a Pacific sunset. It leaves its mark with blood-red claws. This is a primal predator, ready to pounce. This is showtime with a snarl.

Dallas Renegades: Born from a rebel spirit and a Lone Star swagger comes a team that blew in like the dust off a Texas tornado. It’s as black as leather: badass, brazen, and bad-to-the-bone. It’s as blue as the North Texas sky: big, bold, and boundless; beyond limitation. It’s red-eyed and relentless, fiery and fearless, unconventional and untamed. It’s outlaws, outliers, and outsiders.

St. Louis Battlehawks: This is a team born and raised in St. Louis, ready for its maiden flight. Winged warriors, preparing to fight; they attack as one. With a streak of blue, and a flash of chrome; this is metal, muscle, and a mandate to win at all costs. Featuring a blade of iron and wings of blue steel, this is STL proud.

Tampa Bay Vipers: This is a team that slithered out of prehistoric Gulf Coast swamps, demons born in darkness. In the shadows they wait, sheathed in skins of dark green scales, with a venomous hiss, and a dangerous charm. Their flickering tails shine like a glimmer of green, swift and serpentine. Their grip is inescapable. Their bite, unavoidable. With hoods crowned by fangs of gold, they stalk their competition in cold blood, luring all who challenge them into the jaws of defeat.

The relaunched XFL season is expected to start in February of 2020, the weekend after the Super Bowl.

AEW Reportedly Being Investigated By The Maryland State Athletic Commission

The Maryland State Athletic Commission is reportedly investigating AEW over the “Unsanctioned Lights Out” Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega match that took place at AEW Full Gear on November 9.

Former WCW announcer Chris Cruise recently contacted the commission regarding the Omega vs. Moxley match and asked about their rules on blading, and allowing matches to continue if a performer is bleeding either intentionally or unintentionally, and if there was a commission doctor at the show, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

After repeated requests, Cruise was told that the commission prohibits wrestlers from deliberately lacerating themselves or their opponents, or introducing human or animal blood into the match. The commission also said they were at Full Gear and they had a doctor assigned to the show. They also stated that they were conducting a formal investigation into the match and because of that investigation, they were unable to comment on questions about the match.

Cruise recently Wrestling with History podcast and talked about why he doesn’t see AEW succeeding.

“AEW has millions of dollars from the son of a billionaire and is not setting the world on fire and will not succeed,” Cruise said. “It may last a long time, but will never be profitable. Somebody once said ‘if you want to be a millionaire, start with a billion dollars and buy an airline.’ It’s the same thing with a pro wrestling organization; it’s just going to bleed you dry. Not everything is guaranteed to last forever. It’s my convention that wrestling has seen better days.”

Below is Cruise’s Facebook post from November 23, where he mentioned his plans to contact the commission:

I’ll be asking the Maryland State Athletic Commission why it didn’t enforce its own rules at AEW Full Gear. Here are some of those rules. See esp. (m).F. Prohibited Activities.

(1) The following actions are prohibited:
(a) Striking an opponent with a fist or using the knuckles;
(b) Scratching or gouging the opponent;
(c) Butting the opponent;
(d) Slamming an opponent into a ring post;
(e) Striking an opponent with a foreign object;
(f) Kicking an opponent unless a recognized wrestling move;
(g) Stranglehold;
(h) Pulling hair;
(i) Inhibiting breathing by covering the nose and mouth at the same time;
(j) Jumping from the ring ropes onto an opponent;
(k) Deliberately leaving the ring enclosure during a contest;
(l) Unsportsmanlike or physically dangerous conduct; and
(m) Deliberately lacerating oneself or one’s opponent, or, by any other means, introducing human or animal blood into the ring.
(2) A wrestler continuing to engage in prohibited activities after sufficient warning may be disqualified by the referee.
