The professional wrestling world is mourning the loss of one of Memphis wrestling’s most iconic figures.
“Superstar” Bill Dundee has passed away at the age of 82. The news was announced Sunday by his son, Jamie Dundee, who revealed that his father died at approximately 3:30 a.m. No cause of death was disclosed. Dundee had been living with dementia after being diagnosed in 2023.
Born in Scotland and raised in Australia, Dundee’s path to professional wrestling began in an unlikely place. Before entering the ring, he worked as a trapeze artist after joining the circus at just 16 years old. He eventually transitioned into wrestling in 1962 and spent more than a decade competing throughout Australia before making his way to the United States.
Dundee would become synonymous with the Memphis wrestling territory, where he established himself as one of the promotion’s biggest stars. Wrestling for organizations including the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) and the United States Wrestling Association (USWA), Dundee built a reputation as both a gifted performer and one of the region’s top villains.
Much of his legacy was forged through his legendary rivalry with Jerry “The King” Lawler. Their feud produced numerous memorable moments and unique stipulation matches that helped define Memphis wrestling during its peak years. Among the most famous encounters were bouts involving hair stipulations and even a match that saw Dundee win Lawler’s prized Cadillac.
Over the course of his career, Dundee captured the AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship nine times and became one of the most recognizable names in Southern wrestling.
As the territorial era began to fade, Dundee also spent time with Jim Crockett Promotions and later appeared in WCW as Sir William alongside Lord Steven Regal. Although his WCW run was brief, he remained active in the wrestling business for decades afterward as a wrestler, manager, promoter, and mentor on the independent scene.
Dundee continued competing well into his later years before officially retiring from in-ring action in 2019.
Wrestling was truly a family affair for Dundee. His son Jamie Dundee found success in his own career, including a stint in WWE under the name JC Ice. Dundee’s daughter, Donna, was married to legendary tag team wrestler Bobby Eaton until her passing in 2021.
In recognition of his contributions to the industry, Dundee was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017.
In a poignant moment, Memphis Wrestling honored Dundee during its September 5 television episode, just one day before his passing. Members of the roster gathered to celebrate the longtime star and his impact on the promotion and the wrestling business as a whole.
Bill Dundee leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most influential performers in Memphis wrestling history. His contributions to the industry spanned more than five decades, and his name will forever be linked to one of professional wrestling’s most beloved territories.
