AEW Pay-Per-View Plans For 2019 And 2020, More AEW Programming Planned To Air On TNT

AEW has two more pay-per-views scheduled for 2019, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The next AEW pay-per-view will be the big All Out event on Saturday, August 31 from the Sears Centre Arena near Chicago. There’s no word yet on details of the other pay-per-view scheduled for this year.

AEW currently has plans to hold 4 pay-per-view events in 2020. They have already held three special events in 2019 – Double Or Nothing, Fyter Fest, and Fight for the Fallen.

In other news on AEW content, the Wednesday, October 2 TNT episode will be AEW’s first live wrestling TV show, but they have other programming scheduled to air on TNT before that. There will be programming designed to give an introduction to the company and to build to major events. They should be making announcements on this programming soon.

WWE NXT Reportedly Set For Wednesday Nights Live On FS1

The current plan for the future of WWE NXT is to have the brand air on FS1, each Wednesday night from 8pm until 10pm ET, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

This would put NXT vs. AEW on Wednesday nights as AEW’s weekly TNT TV show premieres on Wednesday, October 2 from 8pm until 10pm ET.

There’s no word yet on when WWE will announce the big move, when the show will premiere on FS1, or if it will remain on the WWE Network on Wednesdays. There’s also no word yet on if the show will air from Full Sail Live, or if they will start traveling for TV each week.

The new report noted that WWE has had plans to bring NXT to FS1 for some time, but they weren’t going to finalize the timeslot until AEW and TNT officially announced their timeslot. The move is obviously not official until WWE makes the announcement, but it’s far enough along that Fox has already informed some affiliates. The deal was apparently agreed on in late June or early July.

The working idea is that NXT will air each week as a live two-hour show. The internal feeling is that a taped show will not work up against AEW, which will air live each week also. WWE officials feel like they have a strong edge over AEW, that being the endless supply of main roster Superstars that they can put on the NXT show whenever they want to. WWE also has another strong advantage and that’s being able to promote the show on RAW and SmackDown, as well as other Fox programming.

During a media call today to promote Saturday’s NXT Takeover event, Triple H discussed NXTpossibly airing on FS1 on Wednesday nights and if it is a move to counter-program AEW.

“Contrary to what I’ve heard, because you hear people speculate and I’ve seen the conversations around FS1 or whatever it is with NXT and all that stuff, and then immediately, people come in with counter-programming talk. We have content all over the place, and if people want to talk about counter-programming and bring that up in the conversation – like, Wednesday has been the home of NXT forever. Right?” Triple H asked. “That’s where it’s sat; it’s been on our network on a Wednesday’s time slot now forever.

“And when other people announce [their show] on Wednesday, you don’t hear talk about counter-programming. You just hear, ‘the announcement’. For us, everything is ‘counter-programming’ and it’s this and it’s that – We plan things long in advance,” Triple H continued. “We worry about doing our business and that’s really what we worry about, so, [I’ve been giving] cryptic talk because there’s a lot of thoughts and possibilities. And that’s the great thing about it is that we can do just about anything, it is about what is best for WWE, and this business, and how does it affect the fans in the way that is the most meaningful to them.”

Regarding the WWE vs. AEW Wednesday Night Wars, the Observer noted that TNT airs in more homes and is a much higher-rated channel, but WWE is obviously the known name brand to the general public, and NXT would be promoted on two of the most-watched cable shows, among other programs.

XFL To Start Signing Players This Week

One of the first steps in the XFL’s relaunch was to find players who would fit well with the league. This past June, the XFL hosted Summer Showcase tryouts for former NFL, CFL, AAF and college stars. Now, the process is almost complete.

XFL Commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck announced that invitations will be sent out this week for players to be a part of the league’s first draft pool.

“We’re very excited to start this week sending out Commissioner’s Invitations to hundreds of players that we’ve identified out of thousands that we’ve looked at over the past couple of months,” Luck stated in the above video. “These young men, very talented football players, are helping us build our player draft board. This is the first step in the process of building the rosters that we will see February of 2020 when we launch.”

The XFL Player Draft will be taking place in October, with each of the eight teams being allowed to draft 70 players. Those players who accept an invitation must sign a HIPAA release form while also consenting to and clearing a background check. Following the draft, every player must pass a medical examination and drug test.

“Extending invitations to our draft process marks the next step on an extraordinary football journey,” said Luck in a press release. “Many of the outstanding athletes who receive a Commissioner’s Invitation will be among the first to take the field in our new league, proudly representing their fans and their communities. I am delighted to offer them this exciting opportunity.”

Throughout the tryouts, players like Hakeem Nicks, Aaron Ripkowski and Christine Michael were among those to showcase their skills. Players signed will be a part of a one-year deal.

The relaunched XFL season is expected to start in February of 2020, the weekend after the Super Bowl.

Roddy Piper’s Daughter Teal To Compete At All Out

Teal Piper, the daughter of wrestling legend Roddy Piper, will be a participant in AEW’s Casino Battle Royale match during the All Out pre-show.

The announcement was made on the latest episode of “Road to All Out.” Brandi Rhodes reveals the match will include all female participants this year, with the winner getting a shot at the AEW Women’s World Championship.

As we previously reported, the first women’s champ will be crowned on AEW’s TNT debut.

In the video, Teal talks about what it was like growing up as the daughter of Roddy Piper. While she doesn’t say how long she’s been training, Piper says she feels like making the leap to the wrestling business will help her feel closer to her father in the afterlife.

Former Lucha Underground star Ivelisse and ex-WWE wrestler Jazz were also revealed as competitors in the match set to take place on August 31.

Over time, Rose realized that wasn’t healthy for her and she decided to be who she wanted to be. Rose says the one place she thought would shun her (the wrestling business) was the first place to completely embrace her. Rose said it was incredibly humbling when people from AEW came to her and said they wanted her to work for them. Rose continues that she’s put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the business and it feels surreal that she can be where she’s at, and be herself.

Billy Corgan Announced First NWA TV Taping For Planned Series

Billy Corgan has announced the NWA will soon begin producing their own series, with the first taping scheduled for the end of Summer.

NWA posted a video on Wednesday in which Corgan says he’s grateful to the wrestling promotions his company has partnered with in the past — like Ring of Honor — but now it’s time to “bring the NWA back into the spotlight and run on its own oxygen.”

Billy says the first NWA TV tapings will take place in Atlanta this September and October. The specific location of the tapings were not announced in the video.

Corgan did, however, stress the importance in his eyes of taping in front of a studio audience. “The thing that sticks out in my mind about studio wrestling, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, was anything could really happen,” Billy explained. “You had people getting up very early in the morning, Saturday morning kids television, and it had a real feeling of chaos and anarchy. And I think that really sold to me — as a fan — that there was an element of danger and there was an element of anything could happen. I really want to bring that back to professional wrestling.”
