The Rock Gives Props For The New NWA Powerrr Premiere

Former WWE Champion The Rock took to Twitter to give props to Jim Cornette and everyone else responsible for the new NWA Powerrr show that premiered this week on YouTube, seen below.

The exchange began when Cornette, who is doing commentary for the show, responded to a fan question about how small the ring is.

Cornette responded, “Actually, standard size for all @nwa rings (& most Southern territories) has been 18X18 since the 1960-70’s. Some spot show/small studios used 16X16. Tradition in WWF was 20X20 due to large Northeast rings dating back to boxing rings in the 1950’s, some up to 24X24. #NWAPowerrr”

That’s when The Rock chimed in with props for Cornette and the others behind the new NWA Powerrr show.

Rock wrote, “Congrats Jim, the boys, crew etc. Stumbled across this show last night and enjoyed it. I grew up in territories and started my career at channel 5 in Memphis so I have a lot of love/respect for small scale, crowd tv shows. Cool vintage feel. Keep working hard boys. Rock”

Cornette responded to The Rock and invited him to the next taping. Cornette wrote, “Rocky, thank you so much for taking the time to check it out! I’m sure I speak for @Lagana and @Billy in offering you two tickets ABSOLUTELY FREE to the next taping! If you have more than 2 guests I’ll sneak one in the back for you!”

NWA boss Billy Corgan re-tweeted Rock’s comments, but has not responded.

The first trailer for “Fighting With My Family” has dropped and the upcoming movie about Paige’s family produced by The Rock shows a lot of “The People’s Champ” in the footage.

“In 2012 I watched a documentary about a young, unknown British female pro wrestler & her wonderfully crazy family,” The Rock wrote on Twitter while revealing the trailer. “I loved it! It was a story that my [Seven Bucks Productions] had to tell. That girl [Paige] would go on to help redefine [WWE] women’s wrestling.”

The Rock’s Daughter Has Started Training At The WWE Performance Center

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s daughter Simone Johnson is training on a part-time basis at the WWE Performance Center.

In the latest episode of Lilian Garcia’s Chasing Glory podcast, Zelina Vega talked about becoming close with Simone and revealed the 17-year-old has been training at the PC in Orlando.

Zelina detailed working closely with The Rock during the filming of “Fighting with My Family” and how Simone gave her the ultimate compliment following a shoot at The Staples Center in Los Angeles. Vega says Johnson told her, “I knew I wanted to start wrestling for sure where I saw you at RAW doing the movie. ”

Sources tell Pro Wrestling Sheet Simone has been training part-time at the PC for the past few months, mainly just occasional sessions with trainers, but there’s word going around that she’ll be starting at the facility in a more serious manner in the near future. Since she’s still in high school, it’s safe to assume that factors into her schedule.

Back in November of last year, Simone spoke about being interested in the business. At the time, she said she hoped to give it a try following graduation from college.

“It’s a sport that is unlike anything else in the world. There’s just a certain amount of passion that every move and match requires, and that’s so admirable. It’s definitely something I’ve thought about and want to pursue,” Simone said.

“The Great One” later came out in support of his daughter pursing sports entertainment, saying she’d be a future champion in the business.

The Rock Wants To Wrestle At WrestleMania 35

The Rock’s WrestleMania 29 encounter against John Cena was Dwayne Johnson’s last WWE match except for an extremely brief contest with Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32. The People’s Champ reportedly wants to wrestle once again at next year’s WrestleMania and WWE might have a big opponent for him.

Dave Meltzer spoke about The Rock’s desire to perform at WrestleMania 35 during Wrestling Observer Radio. WWE wanted The Rock to tag with Ronda Rousey against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon at this year’s show in New Orleans, but they substituted Kurt Angle in Johnson’s place. If The Rock can find time in his busy schedule, then WrestleMania 35 could be a possibility.

“[The Rock] wants to wrestle at WrestleMania,” Meltzer said. “You know [WWE] wanted him last year. He was originally in the Kurt Angle position, he had filming stuff.

“If there’s a movie project or something [The Rock] has to film at that time or a week later or something it makes it difficult because of the injury risk. If he doesn’t have anything much going on I would think that he would. My impression is that he wants to wrestle, you know The Rock loves wrestling.”

The Rock suffered a pectoral injury during his WrestleMania 29 contest which caused shooting for Hercules to be delayed costing the Paramount and MGM film a considerable amount of money. Movie studios have since been leery of allowing The Rock to wrestle due to the amount of money they have invested in him.

The Rock’s name is known on a global scale and having him back in WWE could help the company in foreign markets where his movies are extremely popular. Johnson’s age could also play a factor on whether he chooses next year to wrestle once again, but at any age, he will still be The Rock.

“If there’s no movie project on the table that he wants to do and he wants to do WrestleMania I’m sure Vince isn’t gonna go, ‘hey we don’t need you, we don’t want you,” Meltzer said. “Especially [WWE] is trying to break into China because The Rock’s movies are doing just giant business in China. Even if they weren’t [doing well in China] he’s The Rock and he’s one of the biggest movie stars in the world, some say he’s the biggest, I don’t know if he’s the biggest, but he’s up there.

“Time will tell, it’s up to offers and schedules, you know? It’s not like WrestleMania is going to be the number one thing but I think at 46 [years old], he’ll almost be 47 next year, I think in [The Rock’s] mind he’s probably going, ‘if I’m gonna do another match next year might be a good time.’ Because do you really want to do it at 48, 49? Maybe, but I know he doesn’t want to go in there when he doesn’t have his speed anymore and when he’s not as good as he once was. I don’t see him wanting to be that guy… maybe he would.

“Because let’s face it he can get through anything just based on the fact that he’s technically sound and he has incredible charisma and he’s The Rock. It’s not like he has to go in there and do a bunch of really quick armdrags and things like that. He can just talk his way through a match or just basic his way through a match. But I don’t see him as a guy who wants to go in there when he’s diminished.”

Meltzer said The Rock wouldn’t come back to WWE for a bad angle either as he revealed that someone told him a match against Roman Reigns might be a possibility.

“Someone suggested to me the idea of [The Rock] and Roman Reigns in a match. At first, I thought, ‘eh it doesn’t really appeal to me,'” Meltzer said the more he thought about it, Rock vs Reigns makes sense. They have a built-in storyline due to their family heritage, and The Rock would have no problem giving his cousin the win. It would also be a huge moment in Reigns’ career as WWE keeps pushing him as the next face of the company.

“I feel like that could be something that could appeal to [The Rock],” Meltzer continued. “Again, for Roman Reigns, if they’re trying to get Roman Reigns over something big, I mean The Rock will do the job for him that’s not even a question. In [WWE’s] mind if they want to get Roman over as a big Superstar, you know that’s a match that makes sense from everyone’s perspective.”

WrestleMania 35 will take place on April 7th, 2019 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Rock Returning To The Ring For WWE Soon?

There has been talk of The Rock being interested in returning to the ring at WrestleMania 35 in 2019, according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

No word yet on who The Rock might face but Elias has teased a confrontation with The Great One in recent media interviews. Elias recently spoke with Busted Open Radio and told Rock that WWE is his company now but he’s welcome to “come on back” if he wants.

Elias said, “I’m well aware all the things The Rock has done in the wrestling business and in life. The guy is just a next-level human being. I was getting comparisons here because he played guitar a few times or whatever on television and I wanna throw this out there. He’s done that maybe five times, maybe six times or something like that on WWE television on Monday Night Raw. Rock if you’re out there listening, I’m doing it every single week. I’m doing it out there in front of millions of people all around the world every single week. I’m doing in in front of 10,000 in-person live every show I go to. So why don’t you come walk with Elias so I can show you how it’s really done?”

Regarding The Rock possibly wrestling at WrestleMania 35, his in-ring future has been discussed within WWE and it’s expected that he would at least make an appearance at the show if there is no scheduling conflict.

WWE wanted Rock to team with Ronda Rousey to face Triple H and Stephanie McMahon earlier this year at WrestleMania 34 but that obviously did not happen. One of the potential issues was related to insurance as movie producers insure actors in case they get sick, injured or die during filming. Rock suffered an injury during his 2013 WrestleMania 29 match with John Cena and was forced to miss media for Pain & Gain. The injury also forced Hercules production to be pushed back several weeks. NPR once reported that a delay of just one day can cost up to $250,000 for big-budget movies.

Rock ended up doing a quick squash with Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32 after originally expressing interest in working a regular match. The squash came after an insurance company had issues covering Rock for a planned movie if he were to wrestle the full match. Rock wrestling at WrestleMania 35 will likely come down to if the movie can still get insured.

Rock spoke with WWE’s Cathy Kelley at the recent Skyscraper premiere in New York City and said he can’t wait to get back in the ring.

“I can’t wait to get back to a WWE ring,” Rock said. “People always ask me ‘what’s it like being in a WWE ring?’ I always tell them there’s nothing like it. There’s nothing like inside a WWE ring because there’s a certain live crowd acumen that is second to none. That was always and will always be the best part of my job when it comes to wrestling. Whether I’m wresting a match or just giving a promo. That connection with the audience, there’s nothing like it.”
