Rey Mysterio Announced As First Inductee Into The 2023 WWE Hall Of Fame

Rey Mysterio was announced as the first inductee into the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame class. The most famous luchador of all time..

The WWE has announced its first inductee into the 2023 Hall of Fame Class and it’s a somewhat surprising name. Rey Mysterio will go into the Hall and while he’s completely deserving, that WWE has chosen to induct an active competitor who is not announcing his retirement or is close to being finished with his in-ring career, is the surprising part of this announcement.

Rumors circulated that the Great Muta might be the first name announced, so when a video package featuring Rey started showing as WWE announced their first entrant into this year’s class, fans were thrilled, but also a bit stunned. By every stretch of the imagination and by any measuring stick, Rey’s career is Hall of Fame worthy. That said, he wasn’t on anyone’s radar for being inducted this year, simply because he’s not finished as an active competitor. There have been names inducted that have come out of retirement, but it’s rare to see WWE put someone in the Hall of Fame who has plenty of gas left in the tank and hasn’t announced his departure from active competition.

Mysterio made his debut in WWE in 2002 and quickly became one of the most popular wrestlers in the company. He won numerous championships, including the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, Intercontinental Championship, and United States Championship. He is also a multiple-time Tag Team Champion, having won the belts with partners such as Eddie Guerrero, Batista, and Edge.

Known for his high-flying wrestling style and his signature moves, including the extremely popular 619 finisher, he is perhaps the most famous Luchador of all time and his elaborate masks have become a trademark of his persona. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest high-flyers in the history of professional wrestling and has been a mentor to many high-flyers who followed.

WWE Raw Preview 7/25/22

WWE enters a new era on tonight’s “Raw”. It will be the first WWE broadcast with Paul “Triple H” Levesque officially in charge of the company’s creative direction. Rey Mysterio celebrates his WWE 20th Anniversary.

The company announced Monday morning that Levesque “will assume all responsibilities related to WWE’s creative”. This follows Vince McMahon’s resignation/retirement as the company’s CEO, Chairman, and Head of Creative amid an ongoing company investigation into hush money allegations.

Rey Mysterio Gives A Timeline On When He Would Like To Retire

Following in his uncle’s luchador footsteps, Rey Mysterio began to study the technique at just 14 years old. In an interview with Lilian Garcia, he recalls all the sacrifices he made in the first two years while studying the art of Lucha Libre.

“So, at the time, I was living in San Diego. My dad would go to Tijuana to work on a daily basis. I would go to Tijuana to train,” Rey began. “But then, the roles switched. Now, my parents decided to move to Tijuana, and I was crossing every morning to go to school, and then go to work after school, and then take the trolly back to the border, get picked up, go home, do homework, and then go to wrestling school. I did this for almost two years. When I got my first opportunity to wrestle at the auditorium in Tijuana, I was like, ‘Wow, I’m finally here.'”

Thirty years later, from the first time he stepped in the ring, Rey created a worldwide presence that forever changed the industry as we knew it. Now that he’s pushing towards 45 next month, he admits that he has enough gas in his remunerative tank to last another five years or so before hanging his boots up for good.

“I’ll be 45 in December. And I don’t see myself going past 50, that’s for sure,” he admitted. “My body feels great right now. I’ve been doing new methods of therapy – STEM cells, hyperbaric chambers, cryo chambers, CBD’s, you know, a lot of things that benefit me. I think that has given me more longevity.”

He also adds that he would like to retire officially in WWE.

“Definitely, yes,” he replied on if he wants to retire in WWE. “Once you enter here, you can’t go any higher than this. This is where I’ve always envisioned myself finishing my career.”

While it’s still far yet from when he retires, Rey hasn’t put any thought as to who he’d like to have his retirement match with. Although the most obvious answer could be his son Dominik, he still doesn’t want to jump the gun just yet.

“Um, I really haven’t put thought to it, no,” he answered. “There are a lot of choices, though.”

Rey Mysterio Working Without A WWE Contract

Rey Mysterio has been reportedly working for WWE without an active contract for some time now, according to F4Wonline.com.

On this morning’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer added to that report, revealing that Mysterio had recently asked Vince McMahon for a raise. Vince responded to Mysterio by saying it was a bad time and pointing out the numerous people he had released in the wake of COVID-19.

WWE and Mysterio have reportedly been working out some sort of a deal for a while now. However, it was noted that at this point, Rey could technically show up on any wrestling show at any time with no legal repercussions against him.

As of late, Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik have been in a storyline with Seth Rollins and his stable on RAW. There is apparently a plan for Rey Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins in an “Eye for an Eye Match” for Extreme Rules.

WrestleMania 36 Matches Changed Due To Rey Mysterio And Dana Broke Being In Quarantine

WWE Superstars Dana Brooke and Rey Mysterio are currently in quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio.

Brooke had been pulled from the SmackDown Women’s Title match at WrestleMania 36, which was changed from a Six-Pack Elimination Match with Brooke, champion Bayley, Tamina Snuka, Naomi, Lacey Evans, and Sasha Banks, to a Fatal 5-Way Elimination Match with everyone except for Brooke.

Brooke was pulled from the match because she’s currently sick and in quarantine. WWE officials did not want to take any chances with her, so they pulled her from the match. It was noted that officials are concerned for her, but no other details on her health were provided.

Regarding Mysterio, he’s also currently in quarantine due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak. WWE considered multiple ideas for the United States Title match at WrestleMania 36, and the likely match was going to be Andrade defending against Rey after Rey won the non-title match on last week’s RAW. Rey has now been pulled from WrestleMania 36 due to the quarantine. WWE announced on Monday that Andrade will be teaming with Angel Garza to challenge RAW Tag Team Champions The Street Profits at WrestleMania 36, with the tag team titles on the line.

Brooke and Mysterio have not publicly commented on being in quarantine as of this writing, but as seen below, Brooke did reveal on Instagram that she’s working out at home instead of the gym.

Former NXT Cruiserweight Champion Angel Garza Debuts On RAW (VIDEO)

Angel Garza, who recently lost the NXT Cruiserweight Championship, made his debut on WWE RAW last night alongside Zelina Vega.

The segment began with Humberto Carrillo in the ring as his feud with Andrade was recapped. Commentary noted Andrade would be out indefinitely due to the events of last week on RAW, which was done to cover for his absence due to a suspension.

Zelina Vega then made her entrance accompanied by Garza and explained how he was not only one of the hottest latino prospects in WWE, but also Carrillo’s cousin.

After a back and forth promo, Angel attacked Humberto and it led to Rey Mysterio making the save. Mysterio and Garza then had a match which ended with Garza hitting a Hammerlock DDT on the exposed concrete, causing a DQ finish.

As you’ll recall, Garza lost the NXT Cruiserweight title to Jordan Devlin at Worlds Collide.

Rey Mysterio Gives Injury Update Following United States Title Win

WWE United States Champion Rey Mysterio took to Instagram this week and revealed that he has a separated AC joint in his left shoulder. Mysterio noted that he has been having trouble lifting his arm.

Mysterio is scheduled to be on Monday’s RAW to address the injury and the controversial finish to his win over Samoa Joe at WWE Money In the Bank earlier this month. Rey won the title in that match, which was rushed due to Joe’s busted nose, but he did not appear on RAW this week. Rey was seen in Birmingham, Alabama earlier this week, likely visiting with WWE doctors over the shoulder injury.

Mysterio noted that he’s been doing physical therapy at The Lab in Riverside, CA, and he hopes that will improve his range of motion, which has been really bad since the match with Joe. Rey blamed it on taking the Uranages from Joe.
