The Hardy Boyz And Impact Wrestling Agree To Terms Over Use Of The Broken Universe

Prepare for some WONDERFUL news … because Matt and Jeff Hardy are once again able to use their characters from the Broken Universe without fear of a lawsuit.

As we previously reported, Impact President Ed Nordholm had stated the company was working to amend old contract agreements in an effort to give wrestlers more ownership over their characters — and now he’s lived up to his word.

Sources say the two sides finally came to a mutual agreement that allows the Hardy brothers to utilize their Broken Universe characters in the future. However, terms of the agreement are still unclear.

After things were made official, Matt tweeted a photo of him and Ed with a caption saying: “I am thrilled to PROCLAIM that we have ACQUIRED new ALLIES on our side of .”

Adding, “Ed Nordholm & The Owl of Anthem have revealed themselves as MAJESTIC beings who stand on the side of the LIGHT. The LIGHT always EMERGES, . Everything is COPASETIC & WONDERFUL!”

The Great Trademark Battle of 2017 is officially OVAH.

Why WWE Pulled The Hardy Boyz From RAW And Last Weekend’s Live Events

Scott Dawson suffered a ruptured biceps tendon tear while competing at a WWE live event in Halifax, Canada last Friday, as we previously reported. The injury occurred while Dawson was teaming with Dash Wilder against RAW Tag Team Champions Cesaro and Sheamus.

It was noted in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter the only reason the match pitting heel teams against one another happened is because the original opponents for the champions were The Hardy Boyz. However, WWE wasn’t about to get things cleared up to insure that Jeff Hardy would be allowed to cross the United States border into Canada, so they were removed from the shows.

WWE was working on it but time ran out and Hardy had to be pulled from all shows. The original plan was for Matt Hardy to be in Toronto for RAW and shoot an angle with The Revival for their match, but after the injury to Dawson, that was removed from the show. It’s believed they’ll be able to clear things up before RAW’s next tour of Canada.

Border crossing issues have been an issue for Jeff Hardy due to being convicted on felony drug charges, including a drug trafficking charge in 2009. Hardy was arrested on September 11, 2009 and charged with trafficking controlled prescription pills and possession of anabolic steroids, after a search of his house yielded 262 Vicodin prescription pills, 180 Soma prescription pills, 555 milliliters of anabolic steroids, a residual amount of powder cocaine and drug paraphernalia. He pled guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 10 days in jail, 30 months of probation and a fine of $100,000.

As for Dawson, surgery will likely be required and he’s out indefinitely.

WWE And GFW Assigned Trademark Attorneys For Matt And Jeff Hardy

WWE’s applications for trademarks relating to Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy filed on June 19 were assigned to a trademark attorney on July 27, according to PWInsider. This means they’ll bypass the three-month wait period that applies to most applications.

Global Force Wrestling’s applications for trademarks relating to the Hardys were filed on April 28 and were also assigned to a trademark attorney on July 27.

WWE’s application for Matt Hardy received an initial refusal due to potential confusion with the “Broken Matt Hardy” application, which was filed first by Hardy himself. All other actions will be frozen until Matt’s application is finalized. A similar situation happened with GFW’s application.

Both of WWE’s applications also received an initial refusal due to WWE not providing consent from Matt and Jeff to trademark their respective names. They quickly responded with consent from both of them.

WWE’s application for a trademark on the Hardy Boyz name was filed in April and is set to be published for opposition to the public at the end of August.

Reby Hardy On If They Are Willing To Face Anthem In Court, If She Thinks An Agreement Will Be Made

Sports Illustrated has an interview with Reby Hardy regarding the ongoing dispute between the Hardys and Anthem Sports over the “Broken” intellectual property. Below are a couple of highlights:

Are the Hardys willing to go to court to pursue the IP? Are you optimistic of a judge or jury ruling in your favor?

“Going to the court is not like going to the grocery store. There is a lot of money involved in a legal case, which is another reason why Anthem is dragging this out as long as they can. Jeff Jarrett said, “Just keep dragging it out, they’ll get tired of spending money.” We would rather settle this like civil human beings, which is what we have tried to do for months and months.

“There are so many things that, if we choose to go to court, we can also add into the case. Senor Benjamin, who is my father, never signed a release to have his image be marketed. Technically, they should not have been able to air his footage. They do not have a release for my son, Maxel, who had no written documents saying he could be on set at Universal Studios, which could jeopardize their relationship with the place where they film on a monthly basis. There is also the fact that I created—shot, directed, and edited—so much footage that I never gave them a release to use, either.”

Anthem also denies that it ever asked for a significant percent of Hardy merchandise, including Jeff Hardy’s art work and music, as well as stated that the contracts offered to Matt and Jeff were almost close to equal in terms of pay. Is the company being truthful, and where do we go from here?

“We literally have those documents in email form from Ed Nordholm.

“In one of the contracts, Anthem snuck in a percentage the company would be owed from any income from ShopMattHardy.com and JeffHardyBrand.com. The fact that they would feel entitled to that is a joke. Jeff Hardy’s site is literally his paintings and music; it has nothing to do with wrestling and is an artistic venture. Why are they entitled to any of that? To slide that into the contract was a real shady move, and we have the documents to prove it.

“Jeff Jarrett’s plan was to give Jeff Hardy all the money, and he actually said to pay Matt as little as possible because he believed Matt could not go anywhere without Jeff Hardy. I had reservations about WWE for a long time, but I forgot all of my reservations and our loyalty to the TNA brand after I learned that.

“F— these guys, to put it bluntly. After Matt financed his own shoots and put hours and hours of his own time writing the shows? F— these guys. We didn’t have any scripts. They’re claiming IP, they’re claiming this is their character and development, but we never had one script or one shoot sheet. That was all Matt pouring himself into the character and dedicating himself to it.

“The amount of time and effort he put into this made it his brainchild, which is why this is more of a personal matter than business. It was all our creation, and we can easily prove that it was all us, and it’s nothing but ego on their end. Matt refused to re-sign, they really believed that he could not go anywhere else, and we called them out on their bluff. Ed Nordholm actually told Jeff Hardy’s attorney, “Tell them to go to WWE.” Is that the way you negotiate? To try to get someone to sign a s— contract to work at your s— company for s— money? When it comes down to it, this comes down to their ego versus all of the time, effort, and passion we have put into this project and gimmick.

“This is a personal investment vs. ego. I feel like there will never be an agreement without going to court.”

Reby also discussed Anthem thinking they own the “Broken” gimmick, Anthem saying that Matt asked for an extra $100,000 during contract negotiations and more. You can read the full interview by clicking here.

Matt Hardy Says He Feels ‘Woken’ Following Monday Night Raw (VIDEO)

woken matt hardy woke broken persona universe wwe video jeff

The Broken Universe may have become “woken” following Monday Night Raw … as Matt Hardy came the closest he’s been to his Broken persona in WWE during a backstage interview.

Hardy was featured in a Fallout video and said he felt “woken” after he and Jeff Hardy brawled with The Revival, using the same accent and crazy facial expressions from his days as Broken Matt.

As we previously reportedReby Hardy said in an interview with The Sheet Podcast last week that negotiations with Global Force Wrestling over the Broken gimmick had stalled … but that hasn’t stopped Matt and Jeff from using familiar phrases like “obsolete mule.”

Matt posted the video on Twitter with the caption, “, IT’S HAPPENING.

Could “Woken” Matt Hardy be the compromise that finally allows something like the Broken Universe in WWE?

Matt Hardy Teases “Broken” Change

Matt Hardy continues to tease reverting to his “Broken” ways. He tweeted this video and wrote, “The CELESTIAL VOICES have told me that change is coming.”

The Hardy Boyz dropped more “broken” references than usual during last night’s RAW. As seen in the video above, which WWE titled “Have The Hardy Boyz become ‘obsolete’?”, Jeff said that “maybe we should just fade away and classify ourselves as obsolete,” while Matt said that he was out there “to make a proclamation” that the Hardys were not going anywhere. After Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson came out to challenge the Hardys to a match, Matt said that they accepted despite being “a little stitched up, a little bruised and somewhat broken.”

As noted, Hardy has been in a legal battle since leaving TNA over the “Broken” gimmick and he appeared to hint last week that he was close to a settlement with Anthem.

Hardys Not Close To Acquiring Broken Gimmick?

Matt Hardy has been continuing his “Broken” teases online, and wrote earlier this week that they “are days away from winning.” While there were reports that Anthem Media and the Hardys are getting close to a settlement that would result in the Hardys getting the gimmick back, PWInsider reports that the word backstage at the Impact tapings this week is that “it’s actually much closer to the opposite with the two sides remaining very much at odds.”

Jeff Jarrett Says There’s No Question Who Owns ‘Broken Hardy’ Gimmick

Impact Wrestling has been locked in a legal battle with Matt and Jeff Hardy for the majority of this year over the rights to the Broken Matt and Brother Nero gimmicks.

Impact’s argument is the gimmicks were created while they were working in TNA but both Hardy brothers claim they created the idea behind the gimmicks that were of their own doing. Matt Hardy’s wife, Reby, has been very vocal in her criticism towards Impact over the legal issues and even tweeted that Anthem Wrestling Exhibitions President Ed Nordholm and Jeff Jarrett are the “scum of the earth.”

What complicates matters even more is Jeff Jarrett’s personal friendship with Jeff Hardy. Jarrett recently spoke to Wrestle:List about the ongoing legal battle, where he gave his thoughts on the squabble.

“I always take the high road because there is legal squabbles or potential legal squabbles but I have said this to a couple of outlets, and I say this with very broad strokes – I am from Nashville so I am around music which is intellectual property and I have been in the business 30 years,” Jarrett told Wrestle:List. “Intellectual property laws are very simple, there are two sides to it; there are publishers and the writers, then there are the performers as well.”

“Jeff Hardy has been one of my best friends for 20 years, you can look on my social media and their social media, and we take family vacations together but business is business,” Jarrett continued. “So when it relates to IP it’s real simple, there is a publisher who owns the property, there is a writer who gets credit and can monetize it, then there is the performers. There is no question that Broken Matt and Brother Nero’s performances were off the charts good. But when it comes to ownership to me it’s almost a silly squabble, it’s never been in question. Impact are the owners.”

Impact attempted to re-sign both Matt and Jeff Hardy when their contracts expired earlier this year but negotiations were unsuccessful. The Hardys worked for Ring of Honor in March before returning to WWE together at WrestleMania 33 in April.

Matt Hardy Talks Wanting To Unleash ‘Broken’ Persona Again In WWE, How Hard It Was To Stop Using It

Image result for Matt and Jeff Hardy on their surprise return to WWE (WWE Network Exclusive)

On WWE Network‘s Reborn By Fate – The Hardy Boyz Interview, Matt Hardy discussed whether the Hardys will ever use their broken personas on WWE programming.

When asked by interviewer Corey Graves whether going back to the Version 1 Matt Hardy character after portraying ‘Broken’ Matt for so long, the older Hardy responded in the affirmative and went on to say that he will unleash his broken brilliance on the WWE Universe when the time is right.

“For me, it was very odd going back to regular Matt Hardy, Version 1, or Matt Hardy – Team Xtreme, it was tricky at first. It was hard to be me, which sounds strange, but it was because I got so used to doing my other thing. Things that I had created or morphed into, I almost became. I felt like a broken man having to go back to plain old Matt Hardy in many ways. It’s still within me. It’s still contained. I think when the time is right, I will unleash it again.”

Matt said he likes their chances of using the broken characters in WWE and added that when it happens, it will be big business for the sports entertainment juggernaut.

“I definitely think there’s a chance. It’s something that’s a work in progress. Unfortunately, because of legal reasons, I really can’t go into that right now. But I find it very flattering and humbling that every time we come wrestle in front of the WWE Universe, they chant and they address it and they acknowledge it. Please, keep doing that. I mean, we love it when they do that. And hopefully sooner than later we’ll be able to go into more detail about everything. When it happens, I’m not even going to say ‘if’, when it happens, it’s going to be the most exciting thing to hit WWE programming in a long, long time.”
