Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff Launch Real American Freestyle Wrestling League

Wrestling fans were thrown for a loop this week when WWE legends Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff teased a major announcement with a cryptic nWo-style video on social media. Given Bischoff’s prominent role in the podcasting world, most assumed the pair were reviving something audio-based, perhaps with frequent collaborator Conrad Thompson. But when the curtain was pulled back, the surprise was something no one saw coming: a brand-new freestyle wrestling league.

On Wednesday morning, Hogan and Bischoff revealed the launch of the Real American Freestyle Wrestling League (RAFWL), a new organization focused on amateur-style freestyle wrestling. Joining them as the all-important “third man” is Izzy Martinez, a renowned freestyle coach who’s trained top UFC talent like Jon Jones and Holly Holm — the latter of whom he coached to her legendary upset victory over Ronda Rousey.

In interviews with both the Associated Press and Forbes, Hogan explained that the idea for RAFWL sparked earlier this year while watching Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Henderson defeat Gable Steveson at the NCAA Championships. That bout, which saw a college standout topple a former WWE star and Olympic gold medalist, inspired Hogan to explore a new vision for the sport. Now, he, Bischoff, and Martinez are aiming to build something big, and they’re already eyeing both Henderson and Steveson for involvement in the league.

RAFWL is set to feature eight men’s weight classes and four women’s divisions, with Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades already confirmed as part of the roster. Hogan has declared Blades the “face” of the women’s division — a bold move signaling their commitment to showcasing high-level female athletes from the jump.

The league’s leadership structure is also coming into focus: Hogan will act as commissioner, while Martinez has been named Chief Operating Officer. Bischoff’s role remains a bit mysterious for now, though Hogan noted he’ll be contributing on the production side, which makes sense given Bischoff’s long history behind the camera.

The first RAFWL event is scheduled for August 30 in Cleveland, Ohio, with additional shows expected to be announced in the coming months. While the transition from sports entertainment to true freestyle wrestling might seem like a curveball, Hogan and Bischoff have never been afraid to disrupt the status quo — and with a proven coach like Martinez steering the ship, this may just be the beginning of something big.

Are Hogan and Bischoff about to shake up wrestling all over again — this time, on the mat instead of the mic? We’ll find out soon enough.

Eric Bischoff Says He Almost Died In Recent Health Scare

The world almost lost Eric Bischoff, twice. According to the former WCW President, he had a health scare recently that nearly took his life and even required an emergency helicopter ride to another state. The cause? Just 4-5 tablespoons of psyllium husk, the active ingredient in Metamucil. On the latest “83 Weeks,” the health-conscious Bischoff says he read about how fiber supplements like Metamucil can help with controlling blood sugar, as Bischoff says he is hypoglycemic. Bischoff says that he purchased some of the supplement, and partially read the directions, which recommended 1-3 tablespoons.

“Well, that’s for the average person,” Bischoff chuckled. “Since I spent thirty years in the wrestling business, I know that if one to three is good for the average person, then I need a minimum of 4-5 because that’s how that works.” Bischoff then neglected to read the rest of the instructions which adamantly warned against starting out with such a large dose. Later that night Bischoff began passing “buckets of blood” but did not want to alarm his wife and assumed it would clear up on its own. His condition only got worse, as he continued bleeding at closer and closer intervals.

“About 12:30 I wake up, I go to get up, and I’m dizzy, I can’t hardly stand up.”

Bischoff says that he used his home blood pressure monitor and noticed that his blood pressure was extremely low. Bischoff went to tell his wife he had to go to the hospital, only to immediately black out. Bischoff then woke up and rushed to the bathroom, where he did not end up making it to the toilet.

“It looks like someone gutted a goat in our bathroom.”

Bischoff tried to clean himself up while his wife called an ambulance, which took him to a local emergency room, where Bischoff remained until the bleeding seemingly stopped and he was sent back home.

According to Bischoff, he enjoyed his time as a convalescent, being waited on by his wife, but as Bischoff prepared to do his “Strictly Business” podcast, the next day, he had to tell co-host Jon Alba that he “hit a wall” and couldn’t continue. Bischoff blacked out again, alone in his office, which is not in his house.

Bischoff woke up, went back to the hospital, and was admitted to the intensive care unit for “a couple days.” Bischoff was put under anesthesia for surgery, but Bischoff was bleeding too badly to operate, and even worse, the hospital was running out of his blood type.

“I used up all of the [AB+] blood that they had at the hospital or in the county that we lived in.”

Bischoff was then helicoptered to Billings, Montana, as the hospital there had better equipment and surgeons. Bischoff says the helicopter ride was fun, despite probably costing $50,000-$60,000. After a few days in Billings, Bischoff began to feel better but was kept in the hospital for an extra day for additional observation and a barium test. Doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with him, including where the blood had been coming from.

Bischoff says that what happened is the “gel ball” that forms from psyllium ran through his intestines, tearing things up. Bischoff told his doctor about the fiber supplement and his doctor seemed to concur, telling him to “read the directions” as Bischoff almost died twice, once in Cody, Montana, and then again after being transferred to Billings.

Eric Bischoff Announced For The WWE Hall Of Fame

WWE has announced Eric Bischoff for the 2021 Hall of Fame Class.

Bischoff appeared on WWE’s After The Bell podcast today with Corey Graves and Vic Joseph, where WWE confirmed the induction.

Bischoff will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 37 Week on Tuesday, April 6. The ceremony will air live on the WWE Network. He joins Molly Holly as confirmed names for the 2021 class so far.

As noted, the 2020 WWE Hall of Fame class will also be inducted during WrestleMania 37 Week this year. Names for that class include Batista, JBL, The Bella Twins, The British Bulldog, Jushin Thunder Liger and the nWo (Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman).

Bischoff last worked for WWE as the SmackDown Executive Director in June 2019. He was released from that role just a few months later in October. Bischoff has made three special appearances on AEW Dynamite since then.

Below is WWE’s full announcement, along with a clip from After The Bell:

Eric Bischoff to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2021

Eric Bischoff, a pioneer behind the scenes in sports-entertainment, as well as an incredibly entertaining performer in front of the camera, is the latest inductee in the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021. He was surprised with the news of his induction on WWE After the Bell, which you can listen and subscribe to on Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

He will enter the WWE Hall of Fame during the 2021 Induction Ceremony, which will take place on Tuesday, April 6, streaming exclusively on Peacock in the United States and on WWE Network in the rest of the world.

Bischoff broke into the sports-entertainment industry in the late 1980s for fellow Hall of Famer Verne Gagne’s AWA. He started off in sales but soon became an on-air talent, hosting the AWA’s shows on ESPN and interviewing the legendary territory’s stars. But as the 1990s arrived, the AWA was on the brink of going out of business, so Bischoff made a move that would eventually change the industry.

He joined World Championship Wrestling in 1991, hosting shows and calling the action on WCW’s weekly television shows. But by the mid-1990s, Bischoff had risen the ranks and became executive producer of WCW. He helped bring Hulk Hogan to the company and launched WCW Monday Nitro, the competitor to WWE’s Monday Night Raw that kicked off the infamous Monday Night War that helped make sports-entertainment a pop culture phenomenon.

Bischoff didn’t shy away from the camera either, joining up with 2020 WWE Hall of Fame inductees The nWo as they ran roughshod on the promotion. After WWE purchased WCW in 2001, he brought his brand of ruthless leadership to WWE in 2002 as the first General Manager of Monday Night Raw. His arrival was one of the most shocking moments in WWE history, and his time in charge of the red brand was defined by one simple phrase: “Controversy creates cash.”

Bischoff never strayed far away from controversy as General Manager, as he engaged in rivalries with the likes of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and John Cena. He continued to innovate, as well, with concepts like Raw Roulette and the Elimination Chamber, which lives on as one of WWE’s annual pay-per-view events.

For Bischoff’s innovation behind the scenes and his memorable performance in front of the camera, there is no greater honor than induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Don’t miss Eric Bischoff take his place in the WWE Hall of Fame during the 2021 Induction Ceremony, Tuesday, April 6, streaming exclusively on Peacock in the United States and WWE Network everywhere else. The ceremony will honor both the 2020 and 2021 classes.

Eric Bischoff Sheds Some Light On His Release From WWE, Shoots Down Bruce Prichard Rumor

The former SmackDown Executive Director, Eric Bischoff, took to his 83 Weeks podcast this week to provide some details on why he was suddenly let go from WWE last week. Bischoff is leaving the company with a positive outlook, noting that it was simply an opportunity that didn’t work out as he had hoped.

“I’m not going to spend too much time clearing the rumors and innuendo because it’s out there, and I think people are smart enough to see through the bulls–t that they read in dirt sites and that kind of thing. I honestly just don’t want to get negative,” Bischoff explained. “I’m going to say a couple of things and I will have more to say at some point in time. You know, feelings right now are #1. I was really grateful for the opportunity to work for WWE and it was an opportunity. It didn’t work out the way I wanted it to work out and it clearly didn’t work out the way Vince McMahon wanted it to work out but it happens. I’m not taking any of it personally; professionally, I’m taking a hard look at it and thinking it through.

“But more than anything, I am grateful for the opportunity. Part of the reason that I am is because I had a chance to work with a great team of people – the writing staff on SmackDown in particular, as well as some of the writers on RAW. They are a very talented and unbelievably hard-working and dedicated group of people. Just to have the opportunity to work with people like that in of itself was worth the experiment.”

Eric admits that he never saw this job being something he does long-term, however, he expected to be a part of the company for at least a few years. He now looks ahead to new opportunities and will carry with him fond memories of the people he worked with in WWE.

“I didn’t come here [to Stamford, Connecticut] thinking that I would be working for the WWE for 5 or 10 years. I looked it as a relatively short term opportunity, meaning 2 to 3 years. I didn’t think it was going to be quite this short term but sometimes that happens,” Bischoff said. “WWE is a great company with a very defined culture and process, and I necessarily didn’t fit into it and that is just the way it is. I’m not sad, I’m not disappointed, or angry – I’m not any of those things. I am just looking forward to the next opportunity wherever and whenever that may be, and digging the idea of packing up the truck and heading back into Wyoming, so all in all, I’m very positive. I have nothing but great things to say about the people at WWE and the company as a whole. It is an amazing company. I’ve said this even before I went back there, from the production team and everybody I came into contact with is not only incredibly talented but hardworking and extremely dedicated to the work that they do, so I was grateful and am grateful to have been part of the opportunity to have been a part of it even for a short time.”

When Bruce Prichard was named as Bischoff’s replacement following his release, rumors began swirling on the internet about the two being at odds with one another. Eric went into great detail explaining why those are indeed rumors and how the internet is filled with people making up fake stories to draw attention.

“First of all, I’ve stayed away from social media because I know the kind of digital diarrhea that exists there at a time like this. But this is the first that I am hearing about a narrative like that that is out there, and if it is, I think it is a perfect example that if there is anything out there that suggests that Bruce and I are anything but the best of friends and that I am fully supportive of him, I think that defines bulls–t,” Eric stated. “And as I said, digital diarrhea that the dirt sheets and the douche bags that write them to live off of because nothing can be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, and I know that you [Conrad Thompson] know this because when Loree [Bischoff] and I went to Bruce and Stephanie’s house last night for dinner as they were moving into their new house, and I think Bruce took a picture and sent it to you [Conrad Thompson] after dinner. But that is such nonsense. Bruce Prichard is probably the reason why I got the opportunity in the first place. I can tell you that Bruce had nothing to do with – this was the decision that Vince McMahon made based on whatever went through his mind. And I am 1,000% sure that anything Bruce Prichard said had nothing to do with that.

“Bruce is one of my closest friends and is going to remain as one of my closest friends,” Bischoff continued. “Anybody that suggests otherwise should look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves why they feel they have to do what they have to do as they spread these rumors that I am going to call straight-up, dirt sheet bulls–t. Because if you feel the need to have to do that kind of thing and affect other people’s lives when there is absolutely no basis and truth for it, you are kind of a f–ked up individual. I know I said that I didn’t want to get negative but that is the kind of thing [others do] and people wonder why I feel so strongly about the dirt sheets. And joking earlier and passively calling it ‘rumor and innuendo’? That rumor and innuendo has an impact on people’s lives. In this case, the fact that people are saying these things about Bruce doesn’t impact my life because it doesn’t change the way that I feel about Bruce.”

Eric refuses to let this untimely end with WWE slow him down; he’s immersing himself back into a big project he started prior to getting hired by the company. He also plans to take his wife, Loree, and their dog down to Clearwater Florida for the holiday season so that they can spend some quality time with their kids.

“I had a couple of projects with one big one before I got involved with WWE, so I’m going to jump right back into that,” Eric said. “Loree and I decided, as a matter of fact, just before we started recording this podcast, rather than go right back to Wyoming that we are going to pack up here in Stamford, CT at the end of November and jump into the truck with the dog and head to Clearwater, Florida where our son and daughter in law live and spend a month down in Florida for the holidays with our son, and daughter in law, and our daughter Montana, and just enjoy some Florida weather for a month, and then head back to Wyoming. It’s going to be a fun month and a half or so going into the holidays, and hanging out in Florida with our kids is going to be a great time which is what I look forward to the most.”

Despite being admittedly disappointed about his WWE gig coming to an end, Bischoff says he has no regrets. He’ll take away knowledge from the experience, new friendships with co-workers, and memories of working alongside the CEO himself, Vince McMahon.

“Yep – no regrets, none whatsoever. There is a reason why I hate to talk about this stuff because I don’t want to give people the wrong impression, but when I took this job, I knew what the odds were of it being a long-term job for me. And let me just say it this way, I am not surprised. I am disappointed,” Bischoff admitted. “I would have liked to have met Vince McMahon’s expectations and would have liked for it to be a longer run than it was. I would be completely dishonest if I didn’t admit that, but at the same time, I am not completely surprised either. I went into it with my eyes wide open and knew what the challenges would be and like I said, it didn’t work out.

“But yes, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I may have a different view of it coming in if it was a complete do-over; not that I would want that opportunity because I think it worked out for the best for a lot of reasons, but like I said, my overwhelming feeling is a positive one which I know is going to sound weird for a lot of people,” Eric said. “But between the relationships that I developed, and the people that I met, and the opportunities to work as closely with Vince as I did – as I said a few weeks ago, he is a fascinating guy. He doesn’t have all the answers and is not going to be correct 100% of the time. He is intense and is a lot of things, but not the least of which he is fascinating. To have the opportunity with him was worth the trip.”

Backstage Talk On Eric Bischoff’s WWE Departure And Future, SmackDown Creative, Bruce Prichard

As noted earlier at this link, WWE announced that Eric Bischoff is no longer with the company. Bruce Prichard has replaced him as the SmackDown Executive Director.

The firing of Bischoff was not a shock to people close to the situation in WWE, according to F4Wonline.com. The departure came earlier this morning. PWInsider adds that Bischoff was informed of the release after a SmackDown creative meeting at WWE HQ in Stamford, CT.

Regarding Prichard, WWE’s press release on the Executive Director change acknowledged that Prichard was hired to work the WWE creative team earlier this year, but it did not mention how he was also hired to work as Senior Vice President a month later. Bischoff was hired to be the blue brand Executive Director back in June when Paul Heyman was hired as the RAW Executive Director. Bischoff was to work closely with FOX network officials in heading up the blue brand. It was reported at the time that Prichard was the one who would acclimate Bischoff to the new role, and that Prichard was the one who pushed the hardest for WWE to hire Bischoff in the role.

It was reported today by Dave Meltzer that Prichard and SmackDown head writer Ed Koskey will be the main people in charge of the blue brand going forward. Prichard had been working with Bischoff up until today’s departure. John Pollock of POST Wrestling added that even with the the recent creative team splits between RAW and SmackDown, Prichard was one of the few that was still attending both shows.

There’s no word yet on if FOX officials had any influence when it came to WWE firing Bischoff. Meltzer noted on Twitter that FOX originally wanted Heyman to work as the Executive Director of SmackDown. There’s no word yet on why WWE went with Heyman for RAW and Bischoff for SmackDown.

Regarding Bischoff’s future, there’s also no word yet on what Bischoff has planned. PWInsider noted that Bischoff likely does not have the standard 90-day non-compete clause in his contract because he was an executive, not a talent, and he could appear in another promotion if he wanted. We noted before that Bischoff and his family recently moved from their property in Wyoming to live in Connecticut so he could be close to WWE HQ. It’s unknown if they still have property there, or if they plan on staying in Connecticut.

It was noted by Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live that some people in the company saw Bischoff’s release coming. Morale had been down for a while but it reportedly took a bigger hit on October 1 when the changes were being made. According to Alvarez, there’s been a belief among some in WWE, including Vince McMahon, that going to FOX and making other changes would bring this new “boom period” for the company but the feeling among some is that reality has set in, and they see that this “boom period” kickoff isn’t happening.

It was also reported by Alvarez on WOL that a lot of people didn’t like working under Bischoff, and that some of the people who did work under him wanted to quit. Bischoff was allegedly hard to get in touch with and often hard to find backstage. Alvarez said he had heard that Bischoff barely did anything and was often seen in catering. Some people who talked weren’t even sure what Bischoff was doing at times. Bischoff’s critics also alleged that he didn’t really know anyone and wasn’t familiar with the talents, and that he didn’t go out of his way to learn. Bischoff had noted in media interviews after being hired that he was spending some time to get familiar with the product and the roster, admitting that he wasn’t fully caught up with everything. Alvarez said he always heard “zero good things” about Bischoff, at least from his sources, and that there was always a lot of negative talk. Alvarez also noted that his sources recalled how Bischoff would show up for meetings and then “vanish” with people not being able to find him. We don’t know if Bischoff was off handling other company business, but it’s possible. Alvarez also talked about how he would ask who was running the show if Bischoff was nowhere to be found, and they would name Prichard. With that said, it’s believed that there will be no drastic creative changes now that Prichard is taking the role because he’s been handling some of those duties.

Back when Bischoff was first hired, it was believed by some that he was largely being hired as a scapegoat, and they speculated that he would be fired when something went wrong. It was speculated that the SmackDown ratings may have led to Bischoff’s departure but that’s unlikely for a few reasons. SmackDown has only been on FOX for two weeks and it was expected that the second week would be down from the premiere because the premiere was also billed as a nostalgia show for the 20th Anniversary, and there are almost always drops in viewership following those events. As we’ve noted, the FOX premiere drew an average of 3.888 million viewers while Friday’s Draft episode averaged 2.877 million viewers.

There are rumors of more releases and shake-up-related releases possibly coming soon, according to WOL, but this has not been confirmed. Stay tuned for more updates on Bischoff’s departure and future, and any other changes that are made.

Bischoff took to Twitter and commented on Bruce taking over the gig.

“Bruce is a great producer, good friend and I am certain he is going to thrive in his position. He’s going to be working with a great team of the most dedicated and hard working people I have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know,” Bischoff wrote in the tweet seen below.

Eric Bischoff Not Involved With The WWE SmackDown Creative Process?, More On His New WWE Role

New WWE SmackDown Executive Director Eric Bischoff is not expected to be involved with the blue brand creative process, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. It was noted in the latest issue that right now, those in WWE creative were told that Bischoff will most likely not be involved with the creative process.

With that said, it looks like Bischoff’s job will be to interface with the various departments in the company, and Fox. Bischoff is still to be the leader of the SmackDown side of things. The Observer noted that the brand currently has no leadership and runs off Ryan Ward and other writers pitching ideas off Vince McMahon.

Bischoff had no influence on this week’s SmackDown episode.

Bischoff appeared on the latest edition of the “After 83 Weeks with Christy Olson” podcast, recorded on Tuesday night, and said he had arrived in Stamford, and was watching the show that he will be taking over.

“I’m actually watching SmackDown as we speak, I’m boning up, I’m doing my research and getting familiar,” he said.

Bischoff visited WWE HQ on Wednesday, but said he will really get started next Monday and Tuesday.

“I’m kinda getting oriented [on Wednesday] and starting the process and getting familiar. I’m kicking it off on Monday and Tuesday next week,” he added.

Bischoff also admitted, during another recent “After 83 Weeks” podcast, that he has a lot to learn.

“The honest answer is, I’ve got a lot to learn between now and the time I actually am fully integrated into the process, because the audience has changed. Television has changed. So much has changed over the last five or seven years that I’ve got some catching up to do. I’m not going to sugarcoat it,” he said when discussing what’s different about producing wrestling for TV these days.

Bischoff is scheduled to appear on TV for the RAW Reunion special from Tampa on Monday.

WWE SummerSlam Plans Reportedly Subject To Change Due To Paul Heyman And Eric Bischoff

WWE officials may be changing some of the top SummerSlam plans due to the hiring of new RAW Executive Director Paul Heyman and SmackDown Executive Director Eric Bischoff.

It was noted by @Wrestlevotes that anything WWE had planned in advance for SummerSlam was all subject to change once Bischoff and Heyman fully start their roles next week after Extreme Rules. This would allow Bischoff and Heyman to come in with a clean slate going into one of the biggest shows of the year.

There’s no word yet on what WWE has had planned for SummerSlam but one rumored match was The Undertaker vs. Drew McIntyre.

The 2019 SummerSlam pay-per-view takes place on August 11 from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
