Former WWE Star Brian Myers (Curt Hawkins) Returned To Impact Wrestling

Impact World Champion Eddie Edwards’ open challenge continued  last night with Brian Myers (fka WWE’s Curt Hawkins) answering the call and making his return to Impact Wrestling. Myers took on the champion, but came up short when Edwards hit his finisher, Boston Knee Party, for the pinfall victory.

Over the past few weeks, Myers has teased coming back, calling himself the “most professional wrestler.”

Myers previously worked for TNA back in 2015. He was release from WWE in April due to the company wide cuts due to COVID-19.

Impact Wrestling Features Released WWE Superstars In Slammiversary PPV Promo Video

Impact Wrestling released a new Slammiversary PPV video Tuesday night which starts out with someone in a hood pouring a drink into a glass and watching a “You’re Fired breaking news report” about over 20 plus superstars released from contracts amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The video shows brief clips of Eric Young, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Rockstar Spud (Drake Maverick), Curt Hawkins, Mike Bennett, Maria Kanellis and EC3. There was also an apparent reference to Rusev as the Bulgarian flag was shown.

These wrestlers’ that appeared in the video are all under a 90-day non-compete clause with WWE so none of them can legally negotiate with another promotion until early July.

It should be noted, however, that each wrestlers’ non-compete clauses expire just a few days before the Slammiversary pay-per-view.

This year’s IMPACT Slammiversary takes place, live Sunday, July 18.  A location for the event has yet to be announced.

UPDATE:

Drake Maverick has re-signed with WWE.

Why Curt Hawkins Didn’t Wrestle Last Night

Curt Hawkins was supposed to make his in-ring TV return on last night’s WWE SmackDown but that did not happen. Hawkins’ match was nixed at the last minute due to time constraints, according to PWInsider. Several earlier segments reportedly ran over their allotted time, forcing later segments to be edited. Hawkins’ segment was cut but the plan is for him to wrestle next Tuesday in Denver.

Why Former WWE Stars Aren’t Returning To The Company, Curt Hawkins Is Returning

Source: WrestlingINC

MVP was one of the former stars that WWE reached out to. WWE had reached out to many former stars over the past couple of months to deepen their rosters following the brand split in July. Only Shelton Benjamin, Rhyno, Jinder Mahal and Curt Hawkins ended up signing, although Benjamin’s return was nixed so that he could undergo surgery for a torn rotator cuff.

Dave Meltzer noted in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that talks between MVP and WWE “are now dead.” He noted on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that he didn’t think that WWE really wanted MVP back that badly.

Meltzer also mentioned on another recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that a lot of the talent that WWE has contacted about returning are not going back because they’re doing better by not going back. Meltzer noted Ryback charging $4,500 for indie appearances, and said that he found out what a “pretty significantly pushed person” was making right now in WWE, and that there were wrestlers in TNA – who are getting their money – making more than that person, despite working so few dates.

Meltzer talked about Tommy Dreamer recently turning down an offer from WWE, and said that he knows what Dreamer is charging on the indies and what he was offered by WWE, and the WWE deal was not better for him financially. Not only would he have been making less per date, but he would have also been spending more time and money on the road.

Below is a promo aired during SmackDown Live on Curt Hawkins returning soon:
