Sting Reportedly No Longer Under WWE Contract

WWE Hall of Famer Sting is currently without a WWE contract.

There was a lot of speculating on The Stinger’s WWE status earlier this week after he was pulled from a new Mattel series of WWE action figures, after previously being confirmed for the series. Mattel said he was pulled from the series “due to circumstances out of their control” but they did not elaborate. Now Pro Wrestling Sheet has confirmed that Sting is no longer signed to a WWE deal.

It was noted that while Sting is not currently under a WWE contract, this does not mean that the two sides won’t agree on a possible merchandise deal moving forward.

There’s no word on the AEW speculation that also surfaced this week after Sting had a Twitter exchange with AEW star Lance Archer, which saw AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes chime in. Cody also reacted to Mattel pulling Sting from the new WWE series.

Fans To Be Allowed At WWE And AEW Events In Florida This Month?

WWE and AEW could be able to allow fans at their live events in the state of Florida as early as next week, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Florida Governor DeSantis and his “Re-Open Florida Task Force” have issued a three-phased plan to re-open the state, according to WPLG Local 10. Phase 1 begins on Monday for much of Florida, with the exception of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The plan for Phase 1 states that people are encouraged to not gather in groups larger than 10 and employers should continue teleworking and screening employees for symptoms of COVID-19 if they have to report to work. Also, it states that vulnerable populations, including the elderly and people with underlying health issues, should stay at home during Phase 1. Bars, restaurants and nightclubs are being allowed to operate at 50% of the building capacity. Gyms and fitness centers will be allowed to operate at up to 50% of its building’s capacity. While theme parks will remain closed, the report states the following, which could include WWE and AEW:

“Large spectator sporting events should use strict social distancing guidelines and limit occupancy of venues to 25 percent of building capacity.”

This could indicate that the task force will allow WWE to limit occupancy of the Performance Center to 25% of capacity, and AEW to limit occupancy of Daily’s Place to 25% of capacity. It has not been confirmed that there will be fans allowed at the next round of events. AEW is scheduled to return to Daily’s Place in Jacksonville beginning next Wednesday, while WWE is scheduled to return to the Performance Center in Orlando on Monday, May 11.

Phase 2 will begin “after the successful conclusion of Phase 1” but no date was given. There was no mention of sporting events, according to WPLG Local 10, but these parks may consider re-opening with capacity limits, strict social distancing and proper measures to clean & disinfect under Phase 2. Bars and nightclubs will stay at the 50% of capacity, but restaurants, gyms and fitness centers are being allowed up to 75% under the second phase.

Phase 3 will ease a few more of the restrictions, but the report on plans for the third phase doesn’t include many details. Personal service businesses, such as salons and barbers, are being allowed to operate under full capacity under Phase 3, but there are strict guidelines to follow. You can read the full report on the three-phase plan here.

It will be interesting to see if this allows WWE and AEW to have at least some fans at their upcoming events, and if they take advantage of that.

AEW Returning To Live TV Soon?, News On Dynamite Plans For The Shows Leading To Double Or Nothing

AEW will likely return to live programming with their weekly Dynamite show on TNT in the next few weeks, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The current plan is for AEW to resume tapings at their home base of Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, FL beginning May 6, according to the Observer. AEW is returning to Florida as the state recently opened up for sporting events with national audiences, which is what allowed WWE to resume operations during the coronavirus pandemic.

AEW currently has enough content taped to carry them for several more weeks, which was taped recently in Georgia. The Observer noted that the plan right now is for AEW to go back either weekly or more often starting on May 6 from Jacksonville.

The episodes beginning May 6 will begin the hard push for the Double Or Nothing pay-per-view, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 23. AEW officials expect to have about twice as many talents available for the next set of tapings as some were not brought to the Georgia tapings because they lived in areas heavily impacted by COVID-19. Some of those talents started quarantining earlier this week as officials wanted two weeks of quarantine before bringing people in from those coronavirus hot zones.

The next shows will reportedly focus on talents that are working Double Or Nothing.

WWE Releases The Revival, AEW News

WWE announced that they have released Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder of The Revival. They noted that the release was “immediate”, indicating that they do not have a 90-day non-compete clause.

It had been widely expected that the tag team would be leaving the company once their contracts expired. Both of their contracts were originally set to expire this month. While Dawson’s deal is up, Wilder’s contract was extended until mid-June to make up for time he missed due to injuries.

Wilder recently filed to trademark the name “Cash Wheeler” last month. He also owns the following trademarks related to the team: No Flips, Just Fists; Say Yeah; Top Guys, Shatter Machine; #FTRKO; #FTR.

Dawson also filed several trademarks recently and owns the following: No Flips, Just Fists; Say Yeah; Top Guys; Shatter Machine; #FTRKO.

Following their filings, WWE filed to trademark “No Flips Just Fists” and “The Mechanics”, which is the name that the team originally used in NXT.

It had widely been expected that Dawson and Wilder would be signing with AEW once they were free. AEW currently has no tapings scheduled after filming television last week that will last the company through mid-May. The status of the AEW Double Or Nothing pay-per-view scheduled for Saturday, May 23rd in Las Vegas remains uncertain.

WWE issued the following statement regarding their release:

Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder of The Revival releasedEffective today, Friday April 10, 2020, WWE and The Revival have agreed on their immediate release from WWE. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
