Jushin Thunder Liger Shocks Fans With Surprise In-Ring Return At WrestleCade

WrestleCade weekend delivered one of its biggest surprises ever when Japanese wrestling icon Jushin Thunder Liger briefly stepped out of retirement for an unexpected showdown with The Bad Boy Joey Janela.

Liger officially wrapped up his legendary 35-plus–year career back in 2020, closing the book with a tag match in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. But the 61-year-old Hall of Famer proved he still had one more run-in left in him, answering Janela’s open challenge at the Winston-Salem convention. According to Wrestling Observer, the quick exhibition went about four minutes, with Liger picking up the victory to the delight of the crowd.

Janela didn’t leave with the win, but he left with a bucket-list moment. The former AEW star shared just how surreal it felt to find himself across the ring from the masked legend he grew up watching.

“I thought I saw a ghost! In high school when I was 16, I would bring a portable DVD player on the bus and watch a seven-hour Jushin Liger compilation. Twenty years later, somehow WrestleCade made this wizardry happen! Spectacular feels!” Janela wrote.

Since hanging up the boots, Liger has stayed active in the business through commentary work in NJPW and even popped up in AEW during the 2023 Owen Hart Cup, where he had a brief segment with Ricky Starks.

This year’s WrestleCade was stacked as usual, featuring appearances from Ricky Morton, the Hardy Boyz, JBL, Matt Cardona, Nic Nemeth, and plenty more. But Liger’s unadvertised return easily stole the show — a rare treat for longtime fans and a reminder of why his legacy still resonates across generations.

Women’s WarGames Opens the Show

Winners: AJ Lee, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Rhea Ripley & IYO SKY (via AJ Lee submitting Becky Lynch)

The women’s WarGames match kicked off with Charlotte Flair and Asuka renewing their long-running rivalry inside the cage. From the outset the pace never slowed — stiff strikes, cage shots, and signature offense were everywhere before the ring even filled up.

Highlights included:

  • IYO SKY arriving armed with a trash-can lid and instantly shifting momentum.
  • Becky Lynch attempting to use her history with Charlotte to make peace… only to start swinging seconds later.
  • Kairi Sane entering with a neon chain and unleashing it on anyone who got near her.
  • AJ Lee scaling the cage to get in after Becky tried to block the door.
  • Rhea Ripley storming in with face paint, a bag of plunder, and a missile dropkick that nearly sent Nia Jax through the canvas.
  • Lash Legend dominating the early stages of the Match Beyond with chokeslams, powerbombs, and raw athleticism.

The closing stretch saw Asuka spit mist — but Ripley ducked, leaving Legend blinded. That opening let the babyface squad string together a cinematic flurry: double chops, double suplexes, a Twisted Bliss from Alexa, and the now-signature IYO SKY trash-can dive… this time a senton atomico off the top into a pile of heels.

Becky tried to escape over the cage but the babyfaces dragged her back down, fed her into a right hand, and AJ cinched in the Black Widow for the tap-out.

Dominik Mysterio Shocks John Cena — With Help from Liv Morgan

Winner & NEW Intercontinental Champion: Dominik Mysterio

John Cena came into Chicago looking to continue his improbable late-career Intercontinental Championship run, but Dominik Mysterio arrived with a full Judgment Day-adjacent entourage: Roxanne Perez, Raquel Rodriguez, Finn Bálor, and JD McDonagh all played roles in a match that constantly bordered on a handicap bout.

Cena repeatedly fought through the interference:

  • Raquel hit a one-arm powerbomb behind the ref’s back.
  • Perez landed Pop Rox.
  • Dom scored multiple 619s and frog splashes, only for Cena to keep kicking out or rallying with his signature comeback.

At one point Cena nailed a double Attitude Adjustment on Bálor and McDonagh, seemingly sealing the deal — until Liv Morgan hit the ring. She teased aligning with Dominik… then slapped him. But the swerve was on Cena: Morgan low-blowed him and fed him into Mysterio’s final frog splash, with the ref revived just in time to count three.

Dominik celebrated with both his IC title and the North American Championship as Morgan proudly raised his hand.

Cena stayed behind afterward to salute the crowd as they chanted “Thank you, Cena!”

Stephanie Vaquer Retains Against Nikki Bella

Winner: Stephanie Vaquer (still WWE Women’s World Champion)

Nikki Bella didn’t wait for the bell to get nasty, but Stephanie Vaquer answered with an aggressive early assault of her own. The match swung repeatedly between the two as Bella leaned on veteran instincts and Vaquer showcased the athletic precision that’s quickly made her a standout.

Key moments:

  • Bella surviving the SVB.
  • Nikki hitting the Rack Attack 2.0, only for Vaquer to reach the ropes.
  • Vaquer planting Bella with Devil’s Kiss on the announce desk.

After dragging her challenger back inside, Vaquer finished the job with a gorgeous Spiral Tap, cementing her title reign against one of WWE’s most decorated women’s stars.

Men’s WarGames: Chaos & a Mystery Man

Winners: Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre & The Vision (Bron Breakker, Logan Paul & Bronson Reed)

The men’s WarGames bout was just as wild as advertised, starting with CM Punk and Bron Breakker throwing hands before the cage was even half full. Once Cody Rhodes dove off the top of the structure to enter the match, all bets were off.

Major moments included:

  • Logan Paul arming himself with chairs and hitting a cross-ring crossbody.
  • Jim Uso using the cage door as a weapon and bringing the first table into play.
  • Bronson Reed hitting consecutive 747 Splashes on everyone in sight.
  • Brock Lesnar storming in and throwing suplexes like confetti.
  • Roman Reigns spearing Lesnar through the announce table moments before the Match Beyond officially started.

Inside the cage, everything broke down:

  • Cody and Punk briefly united for a double-team Cross Rhodes / GTS combo.
  • Paul nearly stole it with brass knuckles before Reigns intercepted.
  • The Bloodline, Punk, and Cody were unable to stay on the same page, and tension between Punk and Rhodes simmered throughout.

The turning point came when a masked intruder slipped into the cage, blasted Punk with a basement superkick and a Blackout, then disappeared without revealing themselves. Punk staggered right into a monstrous spear from Breakker, giving The Vision and their heavy-hitter partners the pinfall victory.

After the match, Roman offered Punk a fist bump — which Punk accepted — while he and Cody exchanged tense, barely audible words before Reigns exited.

Penta Shares Update After In-Ring Injury on WWE RAW

Penta’s first-round clash with Solo Sikoa on this week’s WWE RAW came to an abrupt and worrying end, as the match was waved off after Penta appeared to suffer an injury mid-bout. With the referee stopping the action, Sikoa was awarded the win in the ongoing “Last Time Is Now” tournament.

Following the scare, Penta took to social media to address fans directly. While he didn’t reveal what type of injury he suffered or how long he expects to be out, he made it clear that Monday’s setback hasn’t shaken his resolve.

In a passionate message, Penta thanked everyone who reached out, saying the situation pushed him both physically and mentally. He framed the moment as a reminder of the resilience he’s built throughout his career, calling himself a “Mexican warrior” shaped by struggle and pride. He also took a moment to show respect to Sikoa, praising him for a clean, professional match before things went south.

Most importantly for fans, Penta promised he won’t be sidelined for long. He vowed to return “very soon,” more focused and determined to finish the business he feels he left behind.

As of now, WWE hasn’t provided an official medical update, but Penta’s message suggests he’s staying positive and preparing for a quick comeback. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.

Update on Penta After Scary Fall on WWE RAW

Fans held their breath during the November 24th episode of WWE RAW when Penta took a frightening spill mid-match. The injury scare came during his bout with Solo Sikoa in the Last Time Is Now Tournament, forcing officials to wave off the match as medical staff rushed in. The sudden stoppage had viewers worried the Lucha star had suffered a serious injury.

Thankfully, the latest update paints a much more encouraging picture.

According to new information emerging after the show, Penta’s condition isn’t nearly as severe as many initially feared. While the awkward fall looked rough in real time and clearly warranted immediate medical attention, early evaluations indicate that he avoided any major injury.

More details are still to come, but for now, things are trending in the right direction. With how physical Penta’s style is — and how often he puts his body on the line — the quick response from WWE’s ringside team likely helped prevent the situation from getting worse.

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide Lands Major International Broadcast Deal

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide is gearing up for a major visibility boost across Latin America. The promotion — now majority-owned by WWE following their joint acquisition with Mexican firm Fillip earlier this year — has announced a sweeping broadcast agreement that will place AAA programming on FOX platforms beginning in 2026.

The new partnership will see AAA’s marquee shows, including its signature TripleMania events, carried throughout Mexico, Central America, and most of South America (Brazil being the lone exception). Content will air across multiple FOX outlets, including the FOX Tubi channel, FOX’s paid TV network in the region, and the company’s standalone streaming service, FOX One.

Patrick Dooley, WWE’s Senior VP of Global Strategy and Creative Operations, praised the deal as a major step forward for the promotion, noting that FOX’s reach will help expose lucha libre to entirely new audiences. WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio also lent his support, sharing that seeing AAA — the company where he sharpened his craft decades ago — showcased on such a major platform filled him with “pride and excitement.” He added that expanding lucha libre’s cultural storytelling to a wider audience is only the beginning.

The timing lines up with WWE’s ongoing efforts to fold AAA more tightly into its global strategy. Since obtaining a controlling 51% stake in April, WWE has been steadily integrating the 33-year-old promotion into its ecosystem, sending talent back and forth, reviving big events, and positioning AAA as a major player in regions where WWE has long sought deeper traction.

Now, with a FOX deal covering nearly an entire continent, AAA’s profile looks poised to reach heights it hasn’t seen in years — and the WWE-AAA partnership continues to reshape the international wrestling landscape.
