WWE Interested In NJPW Star Okada, Other Major International Signings Expected This Year

Source: WrestlingINC

Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that WWE officials are interested in New Japan Pro Wrestling star Kazuchika Okada. The current IWGP Heavyweight Champion worked for TNA in 2010 and 2011.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that WWE officials are interested in Okada because he’s tall. Okada is billed at 6-foot-3. NJPW has offered a five-year deal to Okada and he’s said he will remain loyal to the company but it’s not known yet if he accepted the deal. It’s believed NJPW would offer more money than WWE just to keep him there.

WWE is expected to make several aggressive talent signings from Mexico, Japan and the UK over the next few months. There are reportedly looking at other Japanese organizations and are said to be interested in one top name from Lucha Underground and AAA. No word yet on who that wrestler is but he has never worked for a mainstream US organization and is unhappy with the creative in Lucha Underground.

Jim Ross Lands New Gig Calling Boxing

Source: Bleacher Report

Former WWE announcer Jim Ross has signed with CBS to broadcast boxing matches, according to a Tuesday report by Cliff Brunt of the Associated Press (via the Republic).

His debut broadcast will be on March 12 at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center in the first of eight “Knockout Night at the D” events to be held monthly.

Ross, 64, was both excited for the opportunity and aware he would require something of an adjustment period, as he told Brunt:

“I can’t overnight become a boxing expert. There will be learned boxing fans, longtime fans, that are going know infinitely more about boxing than I do, and I have no problem with that. My strengths are storytelling and getting you to know the fighter, and then bringing that spontaneity, that voice that cuts through the clutter.”

Ross served as a WWE announcer for 20 years, from 1993-2013. He also served as a WWE senior vice president for talent relations and notably signed “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, John Cena, Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle, among other professional wrestlers, per Brunt.

While Ross will have to bring a different approach to announcing boxing matches as opposed to the WWE matches of his past, he doesn’t plan on totally changing his style.

“I’m excited because I’ll know about the fighters, I’ll know why you should like this guy, why he’s here, what it means to them—the story behind the fight,” Ross told Brunt. “And when the bell rings, I’ll call what I see, describe what I feel, and defer to my expert color analyst for the intricacies.”

That color commentator will be Al Bernstein, a veteran announcer who noted that Ross “brings to boxing the same wit and larger-than-life personality that has endeared him to wrestling viewers.”

In addition to his new gig in boxing, Ross is also working with FITE TV as an adviser and a spokesman and will be doing voice-overs for Mark Cuban’s New Japan Pro Wrestling show on AXS TV.

Major New Japan Pro Wrestling Star Leaves Company

New Japan Pro Wrestling has taken another hit, as Enuhito is reporting that Kota Ibushi is leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling and DDT to be a freelancer.

Ibushi is reportedly leaving because of the physical and mental toll working for the two companies has taken on him. Ibushi is starting a new organization called Ibushi Wrestling Research Institute. He can still work for NJPW and DDT, because he will not be contracted to either.

Ibushi will return from a major neck injury on March 22 at DDT Ryogoku, but officially as a member of IWRI. New Japan has now lost Ibushi, AJ Styles, Doc Gallows, Shinsuke Nakamura and Karl Anderson in recent months.

Update On Karl Anderson Coming To WWE

Japanese wrestling reporter Enuhito noted on Twitter that Karl Anderson just revealed he’s going to WWE. Anderson appeared with partner Doc Gallows in what was apparently their final New Japan Wrestling appearance today. They defeated The Briscoes the day before. Anderson reportedly told fans he wants to come back but has to go find out “who he is.” No updated word yet on Doc Gallows coming in but he’s expected to join Anderson. Below are Enuhito’s tweets and a photo of the two from Japan:

Jim Ross Returning To Pro Wrestling As Lead Announcer For NJPW On AXS TV

It was announced on Tuesday that WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross will be doing play-by-play for “New Japan Pro Wrestling” on AXS TV alongside NJPW veteran and former UFC star Josh Barnett beginning March 4.
“This opportunity to work with AXS TV is attractive on many fronts,” Ross told FOX Sports.com. “The travel won’t be weekly but approximately 8-10 trips to Los Angeles in a year’s time. While there, in a two-day, voice-over session, we will hammer out up to six shows. I’m happy OKC now has non-stop flights to LAX.”

“For me, the New Japan Pro Wrestling business philosophy reminds me of my earlier years in wrestling. I’ve had numerous other offers, some serious and others just flirting to return to TV Wrestling broadcasting but none have had the appeal that AXS TV offered me. We think my style will fit the NJPW in-ring presentation well. We’ll know that conclusively in early March. Plus, AXS TV and I discussed other potential projects outside NJPW.”

“I’m very excited about this opportunity to get off the bench and get back in the game,” he added. “My tank is far from empty. The social media feedback, especially on Twitter, regarding the possibility that I might get back behind the mic for some pro wrestling has been nothing short of spectacular. I’ve been touched by the genuine outpouring of support from fans who have been supporters of mine for years.”

The show is broadcast at 9 p.m. ET.
