Major League Wrestling Signs TV Deal

major league wrestling mlw signs tv television deal fusion

Court Bauer‘s Major League Wrestling just stepped their game up, as the company announced today that they’ve signed a TV deal for a new weekly series.

Sports Illustrated reports the show — which is called Major League Wrestling: Fusion — will begin airing on beIN Sports on April 20 at 8pm in their “Friday Night Fury” fight block.

Bauer told SI they’ve been in talks since the fall with the cable company, who he says were very impressed with the product, and added: “We offer a different presentation because we identify ourselves as a combat sport, but we have a lot more creative freedom than every other combat sport to give the most high-octane presentation.”

According to Sports Illustrated, the deal allows MLW to reach over 50 million households and the wrestling company will be getting a rights fee — meaning they’ll be paid by the network.

In addition, Major League Wrestling also worked out a deal with Lucha Underground that allows Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix to appear as regulars on the show.

Lucha Underground Season 4 Update, Talent Exclusivity Will Be ‘Relaxed’

lucha underground talent exclusivity contracts

The executive producer of Lucha Underground has acknowledged it wasn’t fair to keep talent off TV for up to a year between seasons, so he claims their exclusivity going forward will be “relaxed.”

Eric Van Wagenen told the Masks, Mats & Mayhem show that they’ll be easing up on where people will be allowed to work because no one on their team expected LU to have a hiatus that lasted over one year and it isn’t beneficial for either sides if a wrestler is kept off TV for that long.

“The Lucha Underground LLC partners are going to do a talent exchange with Impact, with Ring of Honor, with NOAH in Japan, Stardom.” Wagenen continued, “This is all under Dorian’s control, but we’re definitely gonna start letting our guys branch out. We’re gonna try to help negotiate relationships with other promotions so that our guys can get more TV exposure.”

He also noted that they were initially territorial … but due to the relationship with Impact Wrestling, they’ve now realized it only helps their company.

In regards to unhappy talent though, the Lucha EP says they’ve had release requests and they’ll be happy to grant them once the characters can be written out of storylines.

As for Rey Fenix and Pentagon Dark, Eric says he believes they’ll be back for Season 4.

Backstage News Regarding The Future Of Lucha Underground

It’s been over a year since the third season of Lucha Underground was taped. The season, which is still currently airing on the El Rey Network, was taped from March – May of 2016, leaving many wondering if a fourth season would be happening.

Dave Meltzer reported on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that there may be some good news regarding the future of the promotion as they have a potential source of funding. The drawback is that the budget for the show would have to be significantly cut as the source of funding is “earmarking far, far less money per episode and for the season” than what the company had been spending for the previous seasons. Meltzer said that while the future of the company was looking bleak, it’s a little “better than bleak” now.

Meltzer noted that many of the stars that he’s spoken to that are under contract with Lucha Underground want their release. Ricochet told Sports Illustrated in July that even though his contract with the company expired, his no-compete doesn’t expire until 90 days after the conclusion of the third season.

“My contract finished last June,” Ricochet told Sports Illustrated. “I’m on the no-compete for the rest of Lucha Underground’s season three, then I have 90 days after that. I can be on any TV as long as it’s not American TV. I can work indies, I can do iPPVs, most anything, really, just not on American TV. I’m not sure about a Season 4 with Lucha Underground. I’m busy until October, and I might take November off to heal up again. I really want to work on my diet and get myself in the best shape possible.”

GLOW Netflix Series Features Cameos From A Bunch Of Popular Wrestlers (Photos)

The new Netflix series GLOW was finally released yesterday … and the series included a few surprise cameos from across the world of wrestling!

While the involvement of Awesome Kong and Chavo Guerrero, Jr. was known about before airing, the series based around Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling also surprised viewers with unexpected cameos.

Lucha Underground star Johnny Mundo appeared in the first episode as Salty “The Sack” Johnson, a pro-wrestler hired (and fired) to train the female wrestlers.

Ex-WWE star Carlito and Impact Wrestling‘s Tyrus have small reoccurring parts as Carmen’s older brothers Tom and Kurt Wade — aka The Lumberjacksons.

While Alex Riley was known to have a part in the show before airing, now we know what it was. He plays a wrestler named Steel Horse, who main events a show some of the girls attend in episode 5.

Joey Ryan plays Mr. Monopoly in the same episode and his wife Laura James is there as well.

Episode 5 also features the Legion Hall where PWG events occur and Christopher Daniels/Frankie Kazarian in a match as nameless wrestlers with Lucha Underground referee Marty Elias — and Daniels hits the Best Moonsault Ever.

Finally, while Guerrero himself does not appear in the series, the gym where the cast trains is named after him … but blink and you’ll miss the easter egg. Plus, a later episode is dedicated to Chavo Guerrero Sr.  who passed away earlier this year — and Brooke Hogan makes an appearance.
