Matt Hardy posted another “fun fact” related to his gimmicks and GWF. Hardy noted that when he was known as “Iconic” or “Big Money” Matt Hardy – both were created in ROH – TNA/GFW had him use those gimmicks when he came to the company. GFW President, Ed Nordholm, was interviewed by Sports Illustrated earlier this week to talk about the Hardys and ownership of the “Broken” gimmick.
What about "The ICONIC" or "BIG MONEY" Matt Hardy?
The GFW Impact live event scheduled for Saturday, August 6th in Bridgeport, CT has been canceled. GFW says the event was nixed due to “unforeseen circumstances and logistical challenges.”
The following update was posted to the GFW website, noting that refunds will be issued. The August 4th and August 5th live events in New York are still scheduled. As noted, these are the first Impact live events since 2014.
Bridgeport, Conn. Live Event Update:Global Force Wrestling regretfully announces that the Impact Live Event at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, scheduled for Sunday afternoon, August 6, has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances and logistical challenges. All fans who purchased tickets for the Bridgeport event will be fully refunded. GFW also will offer all who purchased tickets to the Bridgeport show complimentary tickets to either of the other area Live Event shows that will be held that weekend: Friday, August 4, on Long Island, N.Y., at The Sports Arena in St. James (starting at 8 p.m.), and Saturday, August 5, at Staten Island’s Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George (starting at 6 p.m.). Please bring the original receipt from the Bridgeport show.
Global Force Wrestling is dealing with a lot right now. They’re having to scramble and weather the storm of the latest Alberto El Patron incident, and there’s still the Broken Hardys legal kerfuffle to sort out. But the show must continue going ever onward, and part of the plan for the under-new-ownership-and-also-a-new-name GFW is to once again start doing touring live events.
They’re going to need some star power to draw on the road, of course, and the company is already hard at work trying to sign Rey Mysterio to a contract, so he can begin appearing on GFW television and events when his Lucha Underground deal is up. He’s not the only name they’re bringing in, of course. Indie favorites like ACH have already begun appearing on GFW Impact, and it looks like there are more well-known wrestlers lined up to cross the line. (That’s probably not still a thing.)
During a media conference call on Wednesday, it was announced that John Morrison, AKA Johnny Mundo or John Hennigan, will be appearing at GFW’s live events in the New York area. These appearances were likely set up via the new working partnership between AAA and GFW, although given what’s happening between AAA and Morrison’s fiancee, Taya Valkyrie, who knows how long he’ll be working with either company. Morrison has been confirmed to appear on the card for GFW’s live events on August 4-6, in Long Island, Staten Island, and Bridgeport, CT, respectively.
Also joining the fray are oVe (Jake and Dave Crist), who have wrestled in Ring of Honor, PWG, CZW, and many other promotions originally as Irish Airborne and currently as OI4K (Ohio Is 4 Killers). The Crists have seen a marked increase in popularity and bookings over the past couple of years, particularly Dave, as he has become known for his insane cutters.
Jeremy Borash confirmed on the call that the Crists will be coming in soon (meaning they will be part of GFW television and not just the upcoming live events), and will have new names in Global Force. So get ready, because soon you’ll be forced to answer questions about what Jax and Dax Cusp are doing in the Impact Zone.
Alberto El Patron’s attorney, Keith McMahon, released the police case report for the altercation between Alberto El Patron and Paige at the Orlando airport earlier this month. The report lists Alberto as the victim and the weapon being “Hands/Fist/Feet.”
“This last month was marked false reports by ‘untrained reporters’ not doing their due diligence,” McMahon wrote. “Now the official report stating what actually happened.
“I would like to thank everyone that supported my clients never read into false reports posted on the internet by reporters trying to earn a buck by defaming and hurting my clients and their families, including Alberto’s 3 innocent children. As you can see there was no alcohol or drugs and no arrests. NO physical harm to one another, just an argument between a couple that others exploited. Thank you to everyone who believed in them. God bless you all.”
As noted, the Florida state attorney’s office is still determining whether to charge Paige with battery. I asked Dutch Mantel confirmed to WrestlingINC’sRaj Giri that El Patron is still suspended pending the conclusion of their own internal investigation.
Former five-time TNA World Tag Team Champion Davey Richards revealed on Twitter that he has left GFW.
“Today I came to terms with GFW for me release,” Richards wrote. “This story however is a happy one. I have nothing but good memories and great things to say about my time there.”
Matt Morgan revealed on last night’s post-Battleground edition of the Wrestling Inc. podcast that he had also recently requested his release from GFW, while Nick “Magnus” Aldis confirmed his departure from the promotion last week. Richards noted that he was leaving pro wrestling to concentrate on medical school.
“Truth is- I love wrestling,” Richards stated. “But my goal is to be a Doctor. I have managed my time in doing both my school, my job as a Paramedic, being a dad, and a wrestler as best I could for as long as I could. But the demands as I head into the last couple years of Medical School have brought me to a point where I have to choose one or another. So with GFW’s blessing I have chosen medical school.”
Richards had talked about leaving pro wrestling in 2010 to move on to other things, but changed his mind. He is married to fellow GFW star Angelina Love.
Matt Morgan is finished with Global Force Wrestling after requesting his release from the company. Morgan explained his situation on the latest episode of the Wrestling Inc. Podcast
“Here’s the deal,” said Morgan. “I made an agreement to wrestle with them on weekends, right? Where I didn’t have to leave my 9-5 job, anything like that. And unfortunately it just didn’t work out because they switched it and they started taping on week days and they’re looking to travel.”
“So when I first talking to Jeff [Jarrett] about this, the idea was you know, you guys are 20 minutes from my house, you guys are there on the weekends. As long as you guys are there on the weekends I can do this.”
Morgan, who worked for TNA Wrestling from 2007-2013 and again in 2015, went on to explain he couldn’t let anything get in the way of his 9-5 job. He wanted to come back and help the company that was good to him at one point. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out as Morgan believes GFW needs to travel to be successful.
As noted, Nick “Magnus” Aldis revealed last week that he was also done with GFW.
Matt Sydal suffered a dislocated shoulder at the most recent GFW Impact tapings, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Sydal worked an indie match last week in Israel but was limited in the ring. He is scheduled to face Ricochet at a UK indie show tonight. No word yet on details of the injury but it may have happened in the last match of the tapings, which saw Sydal team with X Division Champion Sonjay Dutt and World Champion Alberto El Patron to take on Trevor Lee, Low Ki and Bobby Lashley.
Alberto El Patron is no longer a suspect in his domestic dispute with Paige at the Orlando airport on July 9th, a representative for the Orlando Police Department told Pro Wrestling Sheet. As noted, detectives have reportedly found probable cause to charge Paige with domestic battery over the incident.
As noted, former World Champion Magnus (Nick Aldis) is no longer with GFW as he turned down their contract offer, according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Magnus reportedly worked the most recent TV tapings under a handshake deal as the company wanted to “protect the lineage” of the GFW Global Title, which Magnus previously dropped to Alberto El Patron. The new contracts from GFW give the company 10% of money from indie bookings and it’s being reported that talents do not receive a cut of merchandise sold with their likeness if it’s sold directly by GFW under the new deals.
Magnus is now taking indie bookings via nickaldisbookings@gmail.com and confirmed his departure with the following tweet after a fan commented on how he should do more GFW Impact commentary:
Thanks Adam but I'm not there amy more. My brief return was just a flying visit. I enjoyed commentary though. Big respect for announcers. https://t.co/BLjJRDjA9a
