CMLL Announces First-Ever Arena Mexico All Women’s Show On International Women’s Day

After a tremendous 2023, CMLL has kept the momentum going in 2024, forging a strong working relationship with AEW, even as visa issues attempt to neuter some of the partnership’s impact. But before CMLL holds its big AEW vs. CMLL match in late March, where the Blackpool Combat Club will face top stars Blue Panther, Mistico, Ultimo Guerrero, and Volador Jr., the promotion will do something it’s never attempted in its 91-year history.

During last night’s edition of “CMLL Informa,” CMLL announced that the March 8 edition of “CMLL Super Viernes” will be an all-women’s show. Taking place on International Women’s Day, the show will feature a five-match card, headlined by a Mexican National Women’s Tag Team Championship match where the champions, La Jarochita and Lluvia, will defend against Andromeda and Skadi.

The March 8 show will not be the first all-women’s show in CMLL history, as the promotion previously ran two such events in Puebla and Guadalajara during October 2023, and is believed to have held all-women’s shows in Arena Coliseo during the promotion’s early years. However, this will be the first-ever all-women’s event the promotion has run in their home base of Arena Mexico, considered the most iconic venue in the history of lucha libre. Though unconfirmed, should the show prove to be a success, it would likely lead to the event becoming a yearly tradition going forward.

In addition to the main event, the show will also feature former WWE Mae Young Classic competitor Zeuxis in singles action, challenging Reyna Isis for the Mexican National Women’s Championship, as well as Dark Silueta defending the CMLL Japan Women’s Championship against former WWE star La Catalina. One notable name missing from the show is Stephanie Vaquer, who will be traveling to Japan to challenge Giulia for the New Japan Strong Women’s Championship on March 10.

Sting Descends From The Rafters To Save Ric Flair & Darby Allin In Final AEW Dynamite Appearance

The Young Bucks got quite the surprise on “AEW Dynamite” after spending the majority of Wednesday’s broadcast looking for Sting on what was “The Icon’s” final appearance on the show ahead of his final match on Sunday at Revolution. Matthew and Nicholas Jackson entered the arena at the start of the show, armed with baseball bats. They attempted to find Sting in his locker room to no avail, so they came out to the ring at the end of the night and heckled some fans in Sting masks at ringside, one of whom turned out to be Darby Allin.

The Young Bucks beat up on Allin in the ring with their bats, then called out Ric Flair. Flair was seen heading into the Bucks’ locker room last week on “Dynamite,” seemingly turning on his longtime friend. When the Bucks wanted Flair to hit Allin with one of the bats, Flair turned on them with a thumb to the eye and a cheap shot. The Bucks then started to beat up on Flair, hitting him with a low blow and beating him down.

It was then that Sting’s music hit, and the Bucks headed up the ramp to wait for him on the stage. Sting never appeared from the back, however, and descended from the rafters armed with his own baseball bat to come to Flair and Allin’s rescue. Allin hit the Bucks with a Coffin Drop, and Sting hit Nicholas with a Scorpion Death Drop to end the show, and Sting’s final “Dynamite.” Allin and Sting put their AEW World Tag Team Championships on the line against the Young Bucks at Revolution.

Backstage Details On Why AEW Ran An Injury Angle For Adam Page

Former AEW World Champion “Hangman” Adam Page had a lot of fans worried this week, as it looked as if he might have sustained a serious injury. During the conclusion of the “AEW Dynamite” main event that saw Page, RVD, and Hook face Samoa Joe, Swerve Strickland, and Brian Cage, Page landed awkwardly on his ankle and requested to not be filmed as the show went off the air, all while holding the damaged limb.

Some people believed it might have been a broken ankle, some suspected it was a sprain, but everyone was worried he might miss his upcoming AEW World Championship match with Joe and Strickland on March 3 at Revolution. However, it was all revealed to be a work as Page was fine when he got backstage. However, why did they run the angle? According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW chose to do the angle in case they needed to write Page off TV for a few weeks, giving the fans a backstory as to why the match at Revolution was changed to Joe vs. Strickland.

While that last part hasn’t happened yet, Meltzer also noted the reason why AEW might write Page out is so he can deal with a personal matter that has cropped up, and he would ultimately miss the pay-per-view in order to deal with it. With a little over a week before Revolution takes place, neither AEW or Page has confirmed what the plan is for the AEW World Championship match, with it still being advertised as a three-way match. However, if fans see a segment advertised for this week’s episode of “Dynamite” that’s dubbed “Hangman Page addresses the fans ahead of Revolution,” that might give some insight in to what is happening.

WWE Hall Of Famer Says He’s Prohibited From Attending Sting’s Final Match In AEW

Sting’s legendary career will officially come to a close at this year’s AEW Revolution, which will place in less than two weeks. While many expect “The Icon’s” old rivals and allies to appear at the event, Kevin Nash has confirmed he will unfortunately not be able to attend during a recent episode of “Kliq This.”

According to Nash, Sting had approached him and asked him to make some kind of appearance, but due to his obligations to WWE, it’s not possible. “He asked me to be a part of it, I just said that … you know, with my positioning with WWE I couldn’t -– I couldn’t even be … If I went in the crowd, it would be … you know?”

Nash noted that both he and Sting were disappointed by the outcome and expressed that he believes their close friendship is why “The Icon” wanted him there. “I think he wanted me to be there because I was just one of the guys who has been there with him the whole run. Yeah, I think he was disappointed. I mean, I was disappointed,” said Nash.

While he was ultimately forbidden from attending, he claimed that he first approached WWE before giving Sting his answer. “I asked [WWE] –- you know when you ask and there’s that three-second pause? It’s like when you be on the road and you’re like, ‘Hey babe? We’re at Fort Wayne, I’m gonna go to Stewie’s Strip Joint, you got a problem with that?’ Nothing.”

Sting, who is the current AEW World Tag Team Champion alongside Darby Allin, will defend the titles against The Young Bucks at Revolution on March 3 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.
