Multiple reports out that JR was actually released by Vince as opposed to Ross stepping down himself. All due to JR not being able to control Ric Flair on a panel during SummerSlam weekend.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross thanked the fans on his Twitter for all the support he’s received since his WWE “retirement” was announced today. He wrote, “The feedback I’ve received re: my @WWE retirement has been amazing. Heartfelt thanks to all. I’m ready 4 the next adventure. Stay tuned!” He also wrote, “You’re going to be seeing more of me :)”

– JR’s retirement has already generated a good amount of media, with stories appearing at TMZ, The London Free Press, The Atlantic Wire, and The Toronto Sun.

As posted earlier Jim Ross is retiring from the WWE. Vince McMahon has tweeted about the announcement

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross announced that he is retiring from WWE today, after 20 years of service, to focus on his personal business endeavors.

Jim has had a long and storied career at WWE, both on the corporate staff as well as his television persona, calling some of the most memorable matches in WWE history as the voice of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown for more than two decades. He made his debut with WWE at WrestleMania IX in 1993 and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007 by his long-time friend “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Jim has made many contributions to WWE and the sports-entertainment industry, and we thank him for his many years of service and wish him well

Even though the nation’s wounds were still very fresh following the events on September 11, 2001 the WWE felt that it was important to go ahead with it’s Smackdown broadcast. The show opened with heartfelt remarks by Vince McMahon
