The proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery has cleared a significant legal hurdle, and AEW President Tony Khan remains optimistic about what the deal could mean for the company.
Following reports that Paramount reached a settlement with California and other states challenging the acquisition, Khan discussed the development during a social media stream on September 23.
Khan noted that he has publicly supported the transaction for months and believes a combined Paramount-WBD company could create opportunities for AEW in the future.
He also praised Paramount CEO David Ellison, citing previous interactions through NFL-related business relationships and describing him as a strong supporter of sports and professional wrestling.
While Khan expressed confidence about the direction of the deal, the acquisition has not yet been completed. The proposed merger still faces additional steps before it can officially close.
For AEW, the situation remains noteworthy because Warner Bros. Discovery is the promotion’s longtime media partner, with AEW programming airing across TNT, TBS, and HBO Max.
Khan said he is encouraged by the broader changes taking place in the media industry and believes AEW fans have reason to be optimistic if the transaction is ultimately finalized.
