When Ed Boston and I decided to give full control of our website to Vanessa Vasquez I was sure that my days of contributing on here would be few and far between. I am not into the MMA scene and now more then ever I feel the need to defend the history and tradition of Professional wrestling. Today I was made aware of the reports circulating online about Brock Lesnar not doing anything with the WWE until January. This is the icing on the cake for what has been a long few weeks of being an extremely frustrated fan of professional wrestling.
While the WWE and Vince McMahon have no doubt done a lot of good things for pro wrestling, the truth is they have also ruined it. With the WWE developing it’s own genre of wrestling known as sports entertainment. This in recent years has hurt and offended the old school wrestling fan and those who are students of it’s history. One of the greatest things about being a fan of pro wrestling is being able to have that suspension of disbelief.
However thanks to the internet fans have become victim to the WWE completely not even trying to make us believe in anything. No effort is put in to storylines to make us wonder if what we see is real or not. Have we really become so obsessed with having to see behind the curtain that the WWE just doesn’t care anymore? I believe there are many factors which have brought us to this point in pro wrestling.
The fact that Brock Lesnar is not going to be defending the WWE championship or not even appearing on WWE programming in general until January is a huge slap in the face of pro wrestling and it’s respected tradition. The fact that they are not even going to acknowledge the traditional 30 days clause with Lesnar is ridiculous! They just used it months ago to get the title away from Daniel Bryan when he had to leave. How stupid do you think we are WWE? Has this multi-billion dollar corporate entity become so wrapped up in itself that tradition doesn’t matter? I am so tired of hearing the same old excuse “it’s just entertainment”. Tell that to all the people that throughout history have worked hard to make wrestling something special. Now the WWE treats their flagship broadcast (RAW) like it’s just another television sitcom. The WWE championship has become nothing more then a prop.
If you are a fan of PRO WRESTLING and not just WWE’s SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT now is the time to speak up. The only chance we have to change things with the monopoly giant known as WWE is to hit them where it hurts the almighty dollar. Competition is good for the industry. While other promotions might not reach the same level of success as WWE, independent promotions all over the world exist I believe that we are at a crossroads. It’s time to reclaim our passion for pro wrestling. Support your local independent promotions! Like politics this movement to take back wrestling begins locally.
