More On Vince McMahon Possibly Reviving The XFL

As we previously reported, Vince McMahon is apparently once again interested in getting into the football business. The news, which was originally broken by right-wing writer Brad Shepard, was reported by Deadspin after they reached out to WWE regarding the possible relaunch of the XFL. The response from WWE is that Vince McMahon has started a company separate from WWE, called Alpha Entertainment, and is geared to “explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football.” In conjunction with the filing in June, the WWE spokesperson did not confirm or deny the possible resurrection.

However, the spokesperson did say that “Mr. McMahon has nothing further to announce at this time.”

Despite this, the original reporter of the story stated that an announcement about the XFL could be made on January 25, 2018. This is the Thursday following the 25th Anniversary of Raw.

FOX Sports noted that because the news was broken by a political source, the league could be linked to Donald Trump, who has been extremely critical of the NFL during his presidency. Trump owned the New Jersey Generals in the United States Football League in 1984 and 1985, but that organization folded as well, after only three seasons. Trump was often blamed for the failure of the league, as he pushed it to move to a fall schedule against the NFL which cost it lucrative offers to air games in the spring.

The report also states that McMahon recently filed additional football trademarks, which included “URFL”, “United Football League”, “UFL”, and “For the love of football.”

Unfortunately, there were not many ex-XFL players who would go on and have successful NFL careers after the league folded. Rod Smart, who was arguably the most notable XFL player, who went by the nickname “He Hate Me,” would only go on to play in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers from 2002-2005, of which only two of those seasons he played more than 12 games. He was, however, a member of the 2003 Panthers team, which finished the season as NFC Champions and Super Bowl XXXVIII runner-ups.

When the company folded in 2001, former NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol stated, “We knew it wasn’t going to work (in prime time) from early March on. The launch worked, the people were there, and we didn’t answer their expectations, I guess.” However, at the conclusion of the “This Was The XFL” 30 for 30 special, both he and Vince teased possible interest in bringing back the company.

Dave Meltzer On Vince McMahon Possibly Selling WWE

Apparently there’s been increased talk about Vince McMahon selling WWE in the future since Stephanie, Shane and Linda are all pursuing things outside of the WWE and now Vince is starting his own company focusing on non wrestling things. For the longest time the talk has been Disney would be up to buy it.

Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer discusses the possibility of it and that now would be a good time to do so.

Meltzer talks about Triple H being the only one in the McMahon family who would have interest in continuing to run the company. Meltzer says he doesn’t know if Vince would actually sell to have funds to support other business’s such as reviving the XFL. He says Vince would like to be known as somebody besides a wrestling promoter, but he doesn’t know if Vince ever wants to be not running wrestling.

Noam Dar Out Of Action For 5 Months Following Surgery

WWE has announced that Noam Dar underwent successful surgery to his left knee in Orlando on Thursday. The injury came during the Fatal 4 Way on the November 27th RAW. WWE notes that the injury had been bothering Dar for weeks but his knee went out again this past weekend. He underwent a MRI before this week’s RAW and it was confirmed that he had a meniscus tear. Dar told the WWE website that this was the first time he’d ever undergone an invasive procedure.

Dar commented on his return, revealing that he will be out for 5 months, and The Zo Train with WWE Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Amore:

“We don’t have any confirmed time frame just yet because I obviously need to see the post-op, but it’s more than likely going to be around the five-month mark,” Dar explained. “That would be with me working extensively at the [WWE] Performance Center, so that will make a huge difference. Staying on top of everything so we can hopefully take that time down a little bit.”

“I talked to [Ariya] Daivari, Tony [Nese] and Drew ‘Gaba-Gulak’. Enzo [Amore], I haven’t spoken to yet,” Dar said. “Gulak invited me to ‘Star Wars [The Last Jedi],’ but I’m pretty immobile at the moment. Daivari is obviously upset that he’s lost his rooming buddy, so that would be stressful for anyone. So, he’s going to have a long five months of not having my hilarious companionship.”

Triple H Dials Back Reports Of Ronda Rousey ‘Imminently’ Signing With WWE

Triple H dialed back talk of Ronda Rousey signing with WWE. USA Today reported earlier this month that two sources close to Rousey said that Rousey was finalizing a deal with WWE.

“It’s funny because every now and then I wake up and I look at either social media or the news and I see a report and it’s like, well, that’s news to me because I’m the one who would be having that conversation,” Triple H said on CBS Sports’ In This Corner Podcast. “So it’s interesting with ‘sources say.'”

Rousey made her first WWE appearance at WrestleMania 31 in 2015, helping The Rock battle off Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Since that appearance, she had often mentioned that she was interested in doing more with WWE.

“Everybody is very busy and I know that from Ronda’s side and her team, they are looking for an opportunity,” Triple H said. “I have made it very clear that an opportunity exists and it’s just a matter of us getting together and having conversations.

“I wish I had something more to tell you than that but we are just kind of talking and feeling where it goes and she is making movies and doing other things. But it’s exciting and there are a lot of interest on both sides so let’s see where it goes.”

The former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion hasn’t fought since suffering a first-round knockout to Amanda Nunes in December of 2016. She appeared at the May Young Classic earlier this year, and teased a possible WWE run this past October in an interview with TMZ.

Top Impact Wrestling Stars Returning To WWE?

We noted before that Bobby Lashley, Eddie Edwards and current Impact Grand Champion Ethan Carter III (EC3) could be leaving Impact once their current contracts expire. Like the recent departure of James Storm, these departures would come as Anthem looks to stop losing money. We also noted that WWE does have interest in signing Edwards for the WWE NXT brand. It appears WWE also has interest in Lashley and EC3 as The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that one or both will end up returning to WWE as they are expected to leave Impact when their deals expire.
