WWE Officials Upset With How The WWE UK Title Was Disrespected At A Recent OTT Indie Event

WWE officials are reportedly not happy over how the WWE UK Title was used at a recent indie event in Ireland, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Indie wrestler David Starr, who has spoken out against WWE several times in the past, faced WWE UK Champion WALTER in the main event of Over The Top Wrestling’s WrestleRama 3 event in Dublin, Ireland from the National Basketball Arena, back on June 23. They did an angle during the match that saw Starr grab the title, shout at WALTER for selling out, and then disrespect the title by stomping on it. Fans in the arena popped for the spot and WALTER would go on to win the match.

It was originally believed that WWE approved the angle with the title belt, but that’s not the case. WWE did not give the OK for the belt to be stomped on, and very few knew about it ahead of time. The Observer reports that WALTER and Starr made the call to shock people live, knowing it would get over in a big way. The reaction from within WWE was not positive as many wrestlers thought it was disrespectful and the higher-ups weren’t happy either.

There’s no word yet on if the heat will lead to any kind of punishment for WALTER, or if it would stop WWE from allowing talents to work future OTT events.

Pete Dunne ended up knocking Starr on Twitter, which you can see below. You can see also see fan footage of the spot below:

Today at WWE’s Business Partner Summit, Triple H announced the UK Championship Tournament will return for two nights on June 18 and 19 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. Last year, Tyler Bate was crowned the first WWE UK Champion after defeating Pete Dunne in the finals. Below is WWE’s full announcement:

“Triple H revealed during today’s Business Partner Summit that the United Kingdom Championship Tournament will return for two nights this summer on June 18 and 19. This showcase for the finest talent in the U.K. will emanate from the most famous arena in London, Royal Albert Hall.

The first United Kingdom Championship Tournament was held in 2017 on Jan. 14 and 15 in Blackpool’s Empress Ballroom and aired live on WWE Network. The competition to crown the first-ever WWE United Kingdom Champion was won by 19-year-old Tyler Bate, who beat Pete Dunne in the final. Dunne later defeated Bate for the title at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in a modern classic, and continues to hold the championship as of this publication.

The Royal Albert Hall, meanwhile, is one of the world’s most vaunted arenas. Opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, it has hosted Beatles concerts, Muhammad Ali boxing matches and sports-entertainment bouts dating back as far as 1904 when WWE Hall of Famer George Hackenschmidt grappled there. And on June 18 and 19, it will serve as the proving ground of WWE’s next great U.K. talent.

Stay with WWE.com for more information on the return of the United Kingdom Championship Tournament as it becomes available.”

WWE On Historic WWE UK Title Defense, Pete Dunne On What’s Next, Post-Match Reactions (Videos)

WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne retained his title in a Fatal 4 Way at Insane Championship Wrestling’s “Shug’s Hoose Party 4” event this past Saturday night in Glasgow. Dunne retained over BT Gunn, Wolfgang and Trent Seven.

In the video above, Dunne says he beats people up, he hurts people and he collects titles, and he now owns ICW just like he owns WWE. In regards to where the title is going next, Dunne says he’s taking it to the top and keeping it as he captures title after title until everything is his.

The event also saw WWE cruiserweight Noam Dar return to the ICW promotion. WWE posted the following on The BruiserWeight and Dar working the event:

WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne retains title in historic defenseIn the first WWE United Kingdom Championship defense to take place in the U.K. outside of a WWE ring, Pete Dunne successfully retained the title Saturday night in Glasgow, Scotland.

The BruiserWeight defeated Trent Seven, Wolfgang and BT Gunn in a Fatal 4-Way Match at Night 1 of “Shug’s Hoose Party 4,” an event held by Insane Championship Wrestling at the O2 ABC. The sold-out event will be available for viewing on ICW’s on-demand service starting 24 hours after the show.

Following the match, the victorious Dunne, never one to mince words, said “ICW is one of the top promotions in the world, and I own it now … just like I own WWE.”

Also at “Shug’s Hoose Party 4,” Cruiserweight Noam Dar returned to action in ICW, which was one of his stomping grounds prior to joining WWE. Dar joined former Pinky Party tag team partner Sha Samuels in tag team action.

Now that Dunne has turned back three opponents in one fell swoop, who will be next in line to step to The BruiserWeight? This much is obvious: The brash but brilliantly dangerous Dunne is unlikely to back down from the challenger, whomever it is.
