Report: McGregor Retires Because Of UFC Pay Dispute

Source: MSN

We finally have a reason that appears to explain Conor McGregor’s shocking and abrupt retirement announcement, and the UFC’s response of pulling him from a fight.

According to Charly Arnolt, McGregor wants around $10 million for his UFC 200 fight with Nate Diaz:

UFC President Dan White pulling McGregor from UFC 200 for refusing to promote the fight by doing press events and commercial shoots made little sense since McGregor seems to be so media-friendly and happy to promote anything for the company.

This report about the pay dispute makes all the sense in the world. McGregor wants more money and will refuse to work in order to get his way. In response, the UFC will make it seem like McGregor is not cooperating. Simply put, this appears to be nothing more than a typical athlete pay dispute.

Conor McGregor Pulled From UFC 200

UFC President Dana White announced yesterday that they have pulled UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor from UFC 200, where he was scheduled to fight Nate Diaz in a rematch from UFC 196. He was pulled from the main event at UFC 200, due to his unwillingness to fly to Las Vegas and participate in mandatory promotional activities.

McGregor sent the MMA world into chaos by tweeting that he has decided to retire young.

Dana White said the following:

“We pulled Conor McGregor from UFC 200. Conor did not want to come to Las Vegas and film the commercial or be any part of the marketing that we have, he’s in Iceland training and that’s not possible. We had other incidents like this where guys didn’t want to do the press conference, you have to, he didn’t want to. He felt that leaving right now would hurt his training, but every other fighter on the card is coming. I respect Conor as a fighter and I like him as a person, but it doesn’t make you exempt, you have to do it. Is Conor McGregor retiring? Only he can answer that question, I don’t know, but he’s not fighting at UFC 200.”

Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes set for UFC 200

Contrary to what UFC president Dana White said last month, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate will not be making her first title defense against Ronda Rousey. In an announcement made on Wednesday’s episode of UFC Tonight, Tate will fight Brazil’s Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 at the newly opened T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The promotion’s big pay-per-view is set for Saturday, July 9th.

Tate (18-5) won the women’s bantamweight title with a dramatic 5th round rear-naked choke of Holly Holm in the UFC 196 co-main event. “Cupcake” was behind 38-37 on the scorecards, and while she nearly choked Holm out in (a 10-8) round 2, she successfully handed Holm her first defeat with just 90 seconds left in the fight. The 29-year-old started her UFC career 0-2, which included a 2nd loss to Ronda Rousey, but has since won 5 straight en route to becoming champion. Earlier this week, Tate signed a new contract with the UFC, which is quite the tale considering she was contemplating retirement over losing her initial title shot to Holm last year.

Nunes (12-4) is 5-1 inside the Octagon, with her only loss in the UFC is by 3rd round TKO to Cat Zingano. She opened the UFC 196 main card with a unanimous decision win over Valentina Shevchenko, although she faded badly in the 3rd round and had to hang on for the victory. Four of her UFC wins have come by stoppage, including an impressive 1st round submission win over former title challenger, Sara McMann, last August.

UFC 200 is headlined by a welterweight rematch between featherweight champion Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, which was the UFC 196 main event over Holm vs. Tate. Also on the card is an interim featherweight title between former champ Jose Aldo and ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar, in a rematch of a fight won by Aldo at UFC 156 back in 2013.
