AEW Will Hold Men’s And Women’s Owen Hart Cups In 2022

It was announced earlier this year that AEW had partnered with The Owen Hart Foundation to honor the late wrestler in a number of ways. Through the creation of exclusive merchandise, the potential of inclusion of Hart in AEW’s upcoming video game, and perhaps most exciting of all, the first-ever annual Owen Hart Cup Tournament. The winner of the tournament will receive a cup called The Owen.

Tony Khan was a guest on Busted Open Radio last week. On the show, the AEW chairman revealed more details about the tournament. In fact, Khan revealed there will actually be two tournaments, one for male wrestlers and another for female performers. Owen’s widow Martha has been working closely with AEW and will present the cups to both winners.

More details about the tournaments were revealed on Rampage on Friday night. Both will be taking place in May 2022 with each final happening at next year’s Double Or Nothing. More details will be announced during next week’s Holiday Bash Dynamite special.

The partnership between AEW and the Owen Hart Foundation will finally provide a chance for Owen’s life and career to be celebrated in the pro wrestling sphere. Owen tragically lost his life falling from a zip wire during a WWE PPV in 1999. Martha blames WWE for her husband’s death so has not allowed them to use his name for promotional gain. That includes allowing him to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

AEW To Hold An Owen Hart Cup, Could Include Him In Upcoming Console Game

AEW has partnered with the Owen Hart Foundation and will hold a tournament bearing his name in the future.

AEW has partnered with The Owen Hart Foundation and will hold The Owen Hart Cup as well as honoring the late star’s legacy in other ways.

AEW has released a statement detailing a new partnership with The Owen Hart Foundation. The charity, which was set up by Owen’s widow Martha Hart, was established to help people in need in Owen’s name. AEW will now work alongside the charity and will be putting a number of things in place to keep Owen’s name alive in the wrestling business.

As well as helping Martha and the OHF continue to help people around the world, AEW will be holding the first-ever Owen Hart Cup. The Owen Hart Cup will be an annual tournament where the winner will receive a cup named The Owen. No further details about the tournament, including when the first one will take place and who will be involved, have been revealed at this time.

AEW’s partnership with the OHF and the Hart family will also include the production and distribution of all-new Owen Hart merchandise. A few products were created following the Dark Side of the Ring episode on Owen’s death, but this sounds like it might be a step beyond although again, not many other details have been disclosed.

What is mentioned right at the end of the statement is the inclusion of Owen Hart merchandise in the upcoming AEW console game. While not mentioned specifically, that could mean Owen is a playabale character in the game. If so, it would be the first time the former Intercontinental Champion has been in a wrestling game since 1999’s WWF Attitude.

WWE has probably wanted to sell Owen merchandise and even include him in video games. However, Martha blames the company for his death and has said on multiple occasions that she doesn’t want them making any more money from his legacy. Either Martha and Owen’s children are okay with AEW benefitting from Owen’s legacy since the company has no affiliation with WWE, or everything made through their partnership will go directly to the Owen Hart Foundation.

Owen Hart’s Widow Explains Why She Won’t Allow Him In WWE Hall Of Fame

Owen Hart’s widow Martha has explained her reasoning for not allowing his induction in the WWE Hall of Fame, saying the event is put on for profit only and doesn’t have a physical home.

Speaking with CBS Sports, Martha Hart touched on the conversation which seems to arise every year about the possibility of Owen being inducted. As you’ll recall, Mark Henry even made a public plea to Martha during his Hall of Fame speech in 2018 asking her to allow it to happen.

“There’s always been this talk that, ‘Oh, we want to put Owen in the Hall of Fame,’” she said. “Their Hall of Fame? They don’t even have a Hallway of Fame. It doesn’t exist. There’s nothing. It’s a fake entity. There’s nothing real or tangible. It’s just an event they have to make money. They put it on TV and have a celebration, and it’s just so ridiculous. I would never even entertain it. It’s garbage.”

Martha has instead chosen to memorialize Owen through a foundation in his name.

Her insistence on the WWE Hall of Fame aside, Hart admits she’s forgiven Vince McMahon for Owen’s death in 1999 at the Over the Edge pay-per-view and everything that happened after.

“At the end of it all, I’ve forgiven all of them, really,” she told the publication. “The Hart family, Vince McMahon, I don’t hold any grudges. I hope life has been kind to all of them. My life hasn’t been easy, and I certainly wouldn’t wish harm on anyone.”

“Some damage in life is irreparable. You can’t fix it. It’s done. Again, you can forgive people, but it doesn’t mean you have to befriend them and be associated with them. At the same time, I don’t wish them any harm, and I hope their lives turned out well. That’s the casualties of war. They made their choices and have to live with them.”

“Dark Side of the Ring: The Final Days of Owen Hart” premieres Tuesday night on VICE.

Owen Hart Will Not Be Inducted Into WWE Hall Of Fame This Year

Smith Hart, the eldest member of the legendary Hart family, confirmed on his Facebook account that WWE will not be inducting Owen Hart into the Hall of Fame this year. Smith noted that the reason WWE gave was Owen’s widow, Martha. A frustrated Smith blasted the WWE Hall of Fame for being “nothing more than profiteering, grandstanding and political BS.”

Below is Smith’s full Facebook post:

Bret Hart Talks Owen Hart Should Be In WWE Hall Of Fame, The Hart Foundation & Much More

WWE Hall of Famer did a Q&A with Off The Record’s Periscope account this week. Bret talked about his brother Owen Hart, The Hart Foundation, Hulk Hogan, CM Punk, Hockey and much more.

Bret said his brother Owen Hart should be in the WWE Hall of Fame and he’s hoping the induction happens during WrestleMania 32 weekend in Dallas next year. Bret said the induction is way overdue and he will be sorely disappointed if it doesn’t happen.

Bret said he’s looking forward to WWE’s upcoming “Owen Hart: Hart of Gold” DVD set but he has reservations because it feels like it was too controlled with WWE “tip-toeing” around so they didn’t offend Owen’s widow Martha. Bret said Martha has made an ass of herself and p*ssed him off. Bret believes Martha has done more to erase Owen’s legacy and career, and doesn’t want today’s fans to enjoy Owen.  He said Martha is “very anal” about not getting over what happened to Owen.

Later Bret said if Owen isn’t inducted next year, he won’t attend another Hall of Fame ceremony until he and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart are inducted as a tag team, The Hart Foundation. He also added that he hopes WWE inducts the whole Hart Foundation next year in Dallas – himself, Owen, Anvil, Brian Pillman and British Bulldog.
