John Cena Reportedly In Talks To Join James Gunn’s “Suicide Squad” Sequel

Sources tell Variety that Cena is in talks to join Idris Elba and Margot Robbie in Warner Bros.’ follow-up to 2016’s “Suicide Squad.”

Robbie is returning as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney is back as Captain Boomerang. Variety first reported that the studio decided to have Elba play a brand-new character instead of taking on Deadshot, a character portrayed by Will Smith in the first film. It’s currently unknown who Cena and Elba will be playing.

Warner Bros. had no comment.

James Gunn will write and direct the movie, which is expected to go into production this fall. The tentpole hits theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.

The original “Suicide Squad” — starring Smith, Robbie and Jared Leto — became a massive box office sensation when it hit theaters in 2016, grossing $746.8 million worldwide.

The film will mark Cena’s first comic-book role. Cena made his foray into acting after years as one of the top WWE stars. Cena’s most recent big-screen roles include Universal’s “Blockers,” alongside Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz. He followed that up with the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” with Hailee Steinfeld.

Cena was recently tapped by fellow WWE alum Dwayne Johnson to star in “The Janson Directive” and is also on board to topline the Paramount Players comedy “Playing With Fire.”

Cena will also voice a character in Universal’s fantasy-adventure “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle,” co-starring Robert Downey Jr. and Selena Gomez.

Backstage News On John Cena’s WrestleMania Match Being Kept Secret, Lars Sullivan Involved?

Earlier this week it was reported John Cena signed a deal to work a match at WrestleMania, but it’s not expected to be against Kurt Angle. On this morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported Cena’s match is being kept very quiet.

“The Cena match is being kept secret,” Meltzer said. “I mean even people who know everything don’t know that one. I mean people internal, internal do know, but I don’t know who it is. It’s not Kurt, for sure. He’s got nothing to do with the Kurt match. Kurt is wrestling Baron Corbin, unless there’s another guy who’s coming in that we don’t know that’s what it’s gonna be.”

Also on this morning’s show, Meltzer was asked if Cena’s opponent could be Lars Sullivan, who was originally considered to be Cena’s opponent before an anxiety attack kept Sullivan from starting up on the main roster. Earlier this month it was reported he’s currently in a “good place.”

It’s unknown if Sullivan will be a potential opponent, but he could show up post-match.

“I don’t think they’re gonna do a match with Lars, but I wouldn’t be surprised if John Cena beats somebody and Lars shows up and destroys him,” Meltzer said. “I mean, it’s possible. It may be a little early for Lars, but just the way Triple H talked when he was asked about Lars and other things I’ve heard. Lars, I’m thinking is coming back fairly soon. I don’t know that’s 100 percent, but it’s certainly leaning in that direction. I can say for sure it’s leaning that direction and Triple H kinda sorta hinted that, as well.”

Backstage News On John Cena At WrestleMania 35

Although the WrestleMania 35 card has continued filling out throughout the week, one of WWE’s biggest names, John Cena, has yet to be mentioned on WWE TV regarding this year’s “Show of Shows”.

During the past couple of months, there has been speculation on who Cena will ultimately be competing against at this year’s WrestleMania. WWE United States Champion Samoa Joe was an early favorite for one of Cena’s opponents, especially after a series of promos delivered by Joe hinted that it may be the direction WWE creative was taking. Of course, Samoa Joe will be defending his U.S. Title against Rey Mysterio at ‘Mania.

People have also speculated that Cena will eventually take Baron Corbin’s place and become Kurt Angle’s opponent in what is being billed as the Olympic gold medalist’s final match with WWE. Cena continues posting photos on his Instagram account that poke fun at the situation with Corbin, and bring attention to the fact that Angle was Cena’s vert first opponent in WWE.

F4WOnline is now reporting that there is a deal on the table that Cena is expected to sign for WrestleMania; however, they noted that his opponent is not Kurt Angle.

We’ll keep you updated on further developments as we head in to this year’s WrestleMania.

John Cena Teases Big WrestleMania 35 Match?

John Cena took to Instagram today and posted a rare throwback photo of WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, fueling speculation on a Cena vs. Angle match at WrestleMania 35.

Cena has used his Instagram account to tease feuds in the past. He posted several photos of The Undertaker, also with no captions, leading up to their match at WrestleMania 34.

Cena would be a good fit for Angle’s last opponent because of the history that they have. Cena debuted on WWE SmackDown back on June 27, 2002 by answering an open challenge from Angle. Cena lost that match but it began his historic WWE run.

As noted, Angle announced on last night’s RAW that he will have his farewell match at WrestleMania 35 next month. For those who missed it, Angle mentioned in a post-RAW interview that names discussed for his last match included Cena, AJ Styles, WWE United States Champion Samoa Joe, Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and WWE Intercontinental Champion Bobby Lashley.

There has been speculation on a Cena vs. Joe title match for WrestleMania 35, but Dave Meltzer recently noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Cena vs. Joe was not the plan for WrestleMania 35, at least as of a week ago.

Nickelodeon is reviving “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader,” but John Cena has replaced Jeff Foxworthy as host of the show.

Variety spoke with Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins about the new lineup of programming he’s been working on in an article published on Thursday. One of those shows is a revival of “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader,” which ran from 2007 to 2015 on Fox.

No word on when the new series will premiere with Cena at the helm.

For those unfamiliar with the format, the show brings adult contestants onstage to answer questions as if they came from an elementary school quiz.

Some of the other shows announced today include an “All That” revival with Kenan Thompson serving as executive producer, several Spongebob Squarepants spinoffs, a show based off of popular YouTube series “Ryans ToyReview” and more.

John Cena’s WWE Injury Is Reportedly Not Real

Related image

WWE claiming that John Cena was injured on Monday prior to The Royal Rumble is actually a work, according to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio.

Cena started filming another movie in Vancouver this week. The injury angle may have just been a way to write Cena out of this Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Meltzer reported earlier this month that WWE was planning for Cena to face Lars Sullivan at WrestleMania 35. He speculated that the original plan might have been for Sullivan to injure Cena to take him out of the Rumble. This would have started the build toward their scheduled match at WrestleMania and kept Cena off of WWE television while he filmed his new movie. Sullivan ended up not making his main roster debut at the RAW and SmackDown television tapings earlier this month reportedly due to an anxiety attack.

There is still no update yet on Sullivan. WWE Royal Rumble takes place on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Chase Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona. Join us here at Wrestling Inc. for live coverage beginning at 5 pm ET.

John Cena’s Royal Rumble Match Status Questionable Following Ankle Injury

WWE announced that John Cena re-aggravated a left ankle injury that he sustained last week. His status for the Royal Rumble is unknown.

According to WWE.com, the injury seemingly occurred when McIntyre applied an ankle lock on Cena during the fatal four-way contender’s match on RAW, which was won by Finn Balor. It was noted that Cena was favoring his left ankle while leaving the ring after Raw went off the air.

Cena then re-aggravated the injury yesterday while training his legs at the gym, which has cast doubt on whether he will be able to compete in the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match this Sunday.

WWE and Cena will be providing an update over the next few days in regards to his Royal Rumble status. The Royal Rumble takes place this Sunday, January 27 inside Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
