Top NJPW Star Hiromu Takahashi Out For Six Months

NJPW announced earlier today IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi is out for six months due to a torn left pectoral.

“After medical assessment, Hiromu Takahashi’s left pectoral injury will leave him out of action for an estimated six months. More information will follow.”

Takahashi last wrestled on February 19 at a Road to Castle Attack event in Morioka where the injury came during a tag match. NJPW had previously announced he would miss a February 20 event, but obviously the injury sustained will keep him out much longer.

Takahashi was scheduled to defend the title at Castle Attack on February 28 against El Phantasmo. No word yet on how NJPW is going to handle the title situation.

Los Ingobernables de Japon member Tetsuya Naito is also currently on the shelf due to a knee injury. He is expected to return to the ring on February 25.

Chris Jericho And Hiromu Takahashi Return To NJPW, Wrestle Kingdom 14 Matches Set

Wrestle Kingdom 14 will feature Chris Jericho and Hiromu Takahashi in matches which were both setup during Saturday night’s NJPW Power Struggle event.

Jericho was the first to make an appearance at Power Struggle when a video played after Kota Ibushi and Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Kazuchika Okada and YOSHI-HASHI.

In the video, a roomful of Tanahashi look-a-likes play air guitar before they’re suddenly all on the ground. Jericho then appears in his Painmaker getup and challenges the “Ace of New Japan” to a match on night two of Wrestle Kingdom 14.

This year’s Wrestle Kingdom will be a two-day event on January 4 and 5.

Jericho – who is the current AEW World Champion – last appeared for NJPW back in June at Dominion when he lost to Kazuchika Okada.

Later in the evening at Power Struggle, Will Ospreay defeated BUSHI in a IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title defense. He then got on the microphone and asked who would challenge him next. As he started to leave the ring, a video began to play that was similar to Hiromu Takahashi’s first “Time Bomb” vignettes. The video ends with Hiromu’s cat dolls lighting a bomb that started a timer on-screen.

Takahashi emerged when the countdown was over and tore off a neck brace before making his way to the ring. He then ran around the ring taking bumps, cut a promo in Japanese and eventually challenged Ospreay to a match on night one of Wrestle Kingdom 14.

Hiromu has been out of action for 16 months after breaking his neck taking a dragon driver from Dragon Lee during the G1 Special in San Francisco back in July.

Backstage News On The Status Of Hiromu Takahashi

As reported last summer, Hiromu Takahashi suffered a severe neck injury after receiving a Phoenixplex from Dragon Lee during their match at the G1 Special in San Francisco. Despite successfully defending his title in the bout, Takahashi was sidelined and ultimately had to vacate his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Takahashi is expected to make a surprise appearance on an upcoming NJPW show to announce his comeback. Word is that Takahashi will be making his full-time return to the ring some time this year, and NJPW is planning on making a big deal about it.

Takahashi first made his debut with NJPW on August 28, 2010, and he performed as a “Young Lion” for the three years that followed. At the time of his injury, Takahashi was in his second reign as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion. He also held the esteemed title of “Best of the Super Juniors” in 2018.

NJPW previously confirmed he’s conscious and is able to sit/talk. Earlier today, NJPW gave some more information on Takahashi being transported back to Japan for further treatment.

“On July 7, during the G1 Special in San Francisco event, Hiromu Takahashi sustained a neck injury and was taken to a San Francisco hospital for evaluation.Takahashi was able to return to Japan today, and will proceed with treatment. We apologize for the delay in publishing this update, which was in order to ensure smooth and efficient transit for Takahashi at the airport. We deeply appreciate our fans’ concerns. Please stay tuned to NJPW for further updates.”

In his championship match, Takahashi was able to wrestle for another couple minutes after being dropped on his neck. He would eventually hit his finisher (Time Bomb) to pick up a pinfall victory and retain the title. Takahashi is a two-time NJPW Jr. Heavyweight Champion.
