Emma (Tenille Dashwood) returned to WWE on Friday Night SmackDown

Another former WWE star returned to the company tonight on Friday Night SmackDown.

As was noted last week, Ronda Rousey wanted to face all challengers and she issued an open challenge for this week. Before her match Friday night, Rousey was in full-blown heel mode as she talked about being an active champion.

After Rousey’s promo, Tenille Dashwood was revealed as her opponent and she is back to using the name Emma. This is Emma’s first time in a WWE ring in almost 5 years. Emma was very competitive but after raking the eyes, Rousey won after hitting the Piper’s Pit and the armbar submission.

Emma took to social media and reacted to Friday night’s match.

“5 years ago today I was heartbroken feeling like my dream had come to an end. Today my heart is so full! I’m overwhelmed by the amount of support I have. You guys are the best. Now… I’ve got some unfinished business to take care of!” wrote Emma.

Before last night’s match, Emma’s last WWE match was on the October 23, 2017 edition of “Raw,” where she lost to Asuka. A day earlier, on October 22, she lost to Asuka at WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs.

Emma recently left Impact Wrestling after three years with the company. During her time there, she held the Impact Knockouts Tag Team Titles.

After her WWE release and before Impact Wrestling, Emma had a stint in Ring of Honor. She was part of the ROH Women of Honor Title 2018 tournament. A year later, Emma made her All Elite Wrestling debut at AEW All Out 2019. She was one of the participants in the Casino Battle Royale. The winner ended up being former AEW Women’s Champion Nyla Rose.

WWE is now interested in bringing back “several” more former WWE Women’s Superstars including Tegan Nox. Nox was released on November 18, 2021.

Backstage News On Sunday’s WWE Releases, Emma’s Backstage Heat

As noted, WWE announced on Sunday that they have parted ways with Emma, Summer Rae and Darren Young. Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated reports that Emma’s departure had been in the works for some time as she had significant heat with company officials. The doors reportedly remain open for Emma to return down the line but some see her departure as “addition by subtraction” in the locker room.

Emma reportedly created enemies on the WWE writing staff and made those issues worse with the way she spoke out on Twitter. Emma did have as much respect as an in-ring performer as any other female Superstars in the locker room but her release sent a message to the locker room.

The decision to release Emma, Young and Summer reportedly came on Friday during Vince McMahon’s routine budget meeting. The Superstars were told on Sunday before they would have needed to fly out for work on Monday. WWE then made the announcements on their website and social media accounts.

Emma Vents About Not Being Used On WWE RAW

Emma expressed her frustration on Twitter last night about not being used on television.

Emma returned to action in mid-June after suffering a shoulder injury in early May. WWE teased a storyline with her and Dana Brooke during the Great Balls Of Fire Kickoff show last week but have yet to follow up on it.

During the Bayley vs. Alexa Bliss match on last night’s RAW, Emma wrote, “watching Alexa Vs Bayley… Then Sasha and Nia.. Love watching others get more opportunities that I never get! Cool..”

Emma had signed a contract with WWE in 2011. She revealed her Emma ring name in August of 2012. She tweeted that she has been with the company for five years and was just sitting backstage at RAW.

Emma made her in-ring return from an injury Friday night at a WWE Live Event in Mississippi.

Emma tagged with Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax against Sasha Banks, Mickie James and her former partner Dana Brooke.

Update On Emma’s Injury And Her WWE Return

Emma is expected to be cleared to return to action in mid-June, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Emma suffered a shoulder injury at a WWE live event earlier this month on May 7th in Liverpool, England. She was teaming with RAW Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax against Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Mickie James. She took a bad landing on her right shoulder after a double knee drop from Sasha on the turnbuckle, which caused the referee to throw the “X” signal and have the match stopped early.

Emma had returned to action on television last month on the April 3rd episode of RAW. She had suffered a back injury last May, and was scheduled to return as “Emmalina” earlier this year. The gimmick was dropped the day it was scheduled to debut this past February, and she reverted back to her “Emma” name.

Emmalina Repackage Nixed After Rehearsals Failed To Impress Backstage Officials

There were big plans for the Emmalina character … but after multiple rehearsals, producers realized she couldn’t pull off what they were looking to accomplish.

Sources say Emmalina was intended to be a throwback to characters like Sable and The Kat — however, delays were caused after officials felt like she wasn’t committing enough to the role and ultimately they decided to just let Emma be evil again.

Producers are still big fans of the character’s concept though — which is why they held hope it would work out — so it’s always possible that they’ll hold onto it for another female in the future.

In case you missed it, Emmalina returned to RAW Monday night and said her makeover was complete … and she’ll now be undergoing a makeover back to Emma.
