Backstage Report On Chris Jericho’s ROH Title Win On AEW Dynamite

Chris Jericho captured the Ring of Honor World Championship for the second time during Wednesday night’s “AEW Dynamite,” defeating Mark Briscoe in a ladder match with some help from The Learning Tree. Discussing the match on “Wrestling Observer Radio,” Dave Meltzer offered a possible explanation for Jericho’s title victory.

“I think that if they are working on an ROH television deal, then it probably is beneficial for them to be champion, to try and close that deal,” Meltzer said.

The writer then confirmed that Tony Khan is in the process of trying to secure a TV deal for the brand. AEW recently re-upped with Warner Bros Discovery, ensuring “Dynamite” and “AEW Collision” remain on TNT/TBS as well as heading to streaming platform Max. However, ROH was not included in that agreement.

Meltzer praised the Jericho-Briscoe match from last night, marveling at Briscoe’s mobility after a career full of death-defying stunts. Both Meltzer and co-host Bryan Alvarez stated that it was possible that Khan would run another rematch between Jericho and Briscoe and ROH Final Battle later this year, which would allow Briscoe to compete in the Continental Classic and take some losses before winning the title back from Jericho.

This is Jericho’s second time as champion, with his last reign also coinciding with rumors that Khan was seeking a media rights deal for ROH. However, no outside agreement materialized, and ROH has since been relegated to its own online streaming platform and appearances on AEW programming.

Following the win against Briscoe, Jericho’s next challenger stepped forward — Tomohiro Ishii of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Jericho successfully defended the ROH World Championship against Ishii during his initial reign in November 2022. Though Ishii has previously held the ROH Television Championship, he has not yet held the brand’s world title.

Joe Koff Dead, Former ROH Executive Dies Of Cancer At Age 73

Joe Koff, former Chief Operating Officer of Ring of Honor, has died at the age of 73, according to a report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider. Koff had reportedly been battling cancer privately and decided several months ago to end his treatment, allowing himself to live out the rest of his days alongside his family as comfortably as possible.

During and after his time with ROH, Koff maintained his role as Senior Vice President of Training and Development at Sinclair Broadcasting Group. It was Koff who convinced his employers at Sinclair to purchase ROH in 2011, kicking off the promotion’s run as a corporate subsidiary.

Throughout his time as COO, Koff helped grow the brand in multiple ways, eventually leading to a jointly-promoted show between ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling at New York City’s famous Madison Square Garden in 2019. In 2022, however, ROH was sold to AEW’s Tony Khan, bringing the Sinclair era to an end.

After graduating from the University of Miami in 1972, Koff began working in sales and advertising before eventually moving to the world of TV. It wasn’t long after that when Koff’s professional experience in wrestling began, as he helped produce a prime time event for Eddie Graham’s Championship Wrestling from Florida.

Though Koff grew up as a wrestling fan, the executive was said to have never interfered in the creative side of ROH during his tenure with the company. Instead, Koff focused on big picture business decisions, with the MSG show said to have been a very proud moment in his career.

Report – Two Serious Injuries Took Place Before AEW Dynamite On ROH TV Taping

Several serious injuries occurred during the ROH TV tapings that took place before AEW Dynamite.

First, Sammy Guevara was knocked out during a match against Serpentico at the ROH TV tapings. According to several fans in attendance, Serpentico came off the top and was caught for a cutter. The timing was said to have been “a little off” and Serpentico landed with Guevara’s face under him.

Guevara was knocked unconscious and the match was stopped. Following the bout, AEW’s medical team attended to Sammy and it looked like they were doing a concussion protocol. Guevara was eventually stretchered away.

Additionally, independent wrestler Kelly Madan was knocked out and may have suffered a neck injury at the taping in a match against Lady Frost.

Madan took a spinning move off the ropes with Frost’s legs landing on her head or neck. A quick pinfall was made, and Madan didn’t move. One fan in attendance said she was “obviously out.” AEW’s medial team, Frost and the referee surrounded Madan as the house lights were darkened. Madan was taken out on a backboard after the ring ropes were loosened.

Backstage News On AEW Contract Status Of ROH Double Champ Dustin Rhodes

Dustin Rhodes may be a double champion in Ring of Honor, but there are no guarantees that he will be sticking around AEW after September. According to Fightful Select, Rhodes’ deal with the company is still up and the end of the month, as Fightful initially reported last year.

Rhodes is currently a ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion alongside the Von Erich brothers, as well as ROH World Tag Team Champion alongside Sammy Guevara. Fightful reports that “many” assumed Rhodes’ title victories meant he’d signed a new deal, but that is apparently not the case as of this writing. The report contains no indication of whether Rhodes is considering jumping back to WWE, the company where he spent the majority of his career for two decades, and where his brother Cody Rhodes is the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion. According to Fightful, in addition to his spots on the AEW and ROH rosters, Rhodes helps out and contributes to the women’s division behind-the-scenes.

Rhodes debuted in ROH at Death Before Dishonor in July 2024 and teamed with Marshall and Ross Von Erich, defeating The Dark Order to win a shot at the ROH Six-Man titles. They defeated the Undisputed Kingdom later that month at battle of the Belts to win the championships. Rhodes defeated the Undisputed Kingdom once again, alongside Guevara, to win the ROH tag belts on an episode of “AEW Collision.”
