Tony Khan Reveals How Ronda Rousey ROH Appearance Came About, Clarifies Her AEW Status

Ronda Rousey is officially living the life of an independent wrestler, including making a stop in Ring of Honor, where Rousey made her promotional debut at this week’s ROH taping, teaming with Marina Shafir to take on Billie Starkz and ROH Women’s World Champion Athena. According to AEW President and ROH Owner Tony Khan, the appearance was a one-off for now.

“She’s not signed but we had a great conversation,” Khan said at the post-AEW Full Gear press conference. Rousey had wrestled against Starkz earlier in the week at a local show in Los Angeles, and Khan wanted to keep the animosity going and felt the feud would be a good addition to that week’s Ring of Honor. This corroborates a previous report that said Rousey was booked to help increase HonorClub subscriptions.

“Ronda was happy to come here and she was great and the crowd was really excited to see her,” Khan gushed. “We’d love to have her back sometime.” Rousey is also a Los Angeles-area local, making the recent tapings in Inglewood easy for the former WWE Raw Women’s Champion to attend.

The former UFC Champion wrestled for WWE from 2018, racking up numerous accolades as well as a Royal Rumble win, until this past summer when she and WWE parted ways. She re-emerged in October, wrestling alongside Shafir at Lucha VaVoom, wrestling Taya Valkyrie and Brian Kendrick. Former AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa said Rousey could be a great addition to the AEW locker room, should she someday sign.

Former WWE Superstar Ronda Rousey Makes ROH Debut After AEW Collision/Rampage Tapings

Former WWE champion Ronda Rousey was spotted backstage at the AEW Collision/Rampage joint show on Friday and not only that but Rousey made her debut for Ring of Honor in TV tapings that took place following the AEW event.

Coming out to the same theme music she had in WWE, Rousey teamed up with her best friend Marina Shafir to take on ROH Women’s Champion Athena and her partner Billie Starkz. The teams wrestled on Thursday at a Wrestling Revolver event in Los Angeles, likely as a tuneup to the ROH match. It would appear that Rousey’s debut ROH match will air next week on the Thanksgiving episode of ROH. She finished up with WWE this past summer and at this time, it’s not known if she will feature regularly on ROH or if an appearance with AEW is in the cards.

Ring Of Honor Final Battle To Air Exclusively On HonorClub

Ring of Honor has announced that ROH Final Battle 2023 will be broadcast live for Honor Club members only. That event is set to take place at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas, on Friday, December 15.

ROH’s Honor Club streaming platform was launched in February 2018. Since AEW CEO Tony Khan acquired ROH last year, a number of changes have been made to the service, including the scrapping of tier levels. Subscribers can access the whole service by paying a $9.99 monthly fee. Honor Club also broadcasts ROH’s weekly television show. The most recent special event to air on Honor Club was the “Jay Briscoe Celebration of Life” show, which was filmed after Jay Briscoe (real name Jamin Pugh) died earlier this year.

Last year’s ROH Final Battle event, which was broadcast live via Bleacher Report in the United States, took place at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. That show saw several title changes, including Athena defeating Mercedes Martinez to become the new ROH Women’s World Champion, The Embassy’s Brian Cage, Kaun, and Toa Liona overcoming Dalton Castle and The Boys (Brandon and Brent Tate) to win the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship, Wheeler Yuta beating Daniel Garcia for the ROH Pure Championship, the Briscoes (Mark and the late Jay Briscoe) winning the ROH World Tag Team Championship from FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) in a Double Dog Collar match, and Claudio Castagnoli ending Chris Jericho’s reign as ROH World Champion.
