The proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery is facing major resistance—and it’s no longer just about business logistics.
A coalition of more than 1,000 professionals from across the film and television industry has signed an open letter urging regulators to block the deal. This group includes actors, writers, directors, and crew members, with over 75 Academy Award winners and nominees lending their names to the effort.
Their concern centers on what a merger of this scale could mean for the creative landscape. The argument is straightforward: fewer major studios often leads to fewer opportunities. According to the letter, combining two media giants could limit competition, reduce creative independence, and narrow the diversity of stories being told.
The signatories also pointed out that media consolidation is already a growing issue. In their view, approving another massive merger would only tighten the grip a handful of corporations have over the entertainment industry—something they believe could have long-term consequences for both creators and audiences.
Up to this point, much of the discussion around the Paramount–WBD deal has focused on financial viability and regulatory red tape. However, this organized response from within Hollywood adds a new layer of pressure. Regulators now have to consider not just economic factors, but also the concerns of the creative community itself.
There are also potential ripple effects for the wrestling world. AEW’s programming currently airs across Warner Bros. Discovery platforms like TNT, TBS, and HBO Max. Any delays, restructuring, or changes tied to the merger could impact media rights deals, scheduling, and the company’s long-term streaming strategy.
At this stage, the situation has clearly evolved beyond a corporate transaction. For many in Hollywood, it’s become a broader debate about control—specifically, who gets to shape the future of entertainment and decide which stories reach the audience.
